    8:53 - "LOD Test" means Level of Detail, which is exactly what's being shown - the triangle that turns into a cube is using a low-detail and high-detail model based on distance. It's just set to transition way closer than most things would be, so the dev can see it happen.

    Fun fact: During the development of Ocarina of Time, there was an infamous bug that would cause beta testers to be sucked into the game. Their souls still reside within the game to this day.

    • @p.r.1308
      @p.r.1308 Рік тому +18

      And when they made Majoras Mask some of these souls have been transformed together with assets over to Majoras Mask.
      One of those souls was called Bob i think... No Ben, it was Ben.

    The Material Room's original purpose was probably to test the appearance of various graphical materials. Many game engines and graphics suites test them on spheres by default. They probably changed the material applied to the sphere and the pane every now and then to see how it looks in-game, but without a way to change it directly in runtime.
    So they could make a version with the metal of Link's sword applied to the sphere, another with the bark of the Deku Tree, and so on. Similarly, the pane could be glass, water, etc.

    it's so crazy that after nearly 25 years, this game isn't drained of ideas and content. OOT and its beta is imo the best and most interesting dev cycle of all time.

      @@user-qv5sm5dw1v exactly why i followed this game's development religiously since 2006. the start of the cycle to the finished end product are so fundamentally different it's so uncanny. most video game betas are relatively similar to the final version, and the only other cycle as crazy as this is resident evil 4 where one of the versions eventually became devil may cry.

      Nah it wasn't. I've datamined this from head to toe the geometry isnt the same and the MM final battle is at least twice or 3x as big. There would have been no need to transfer it knowing this room structure would take 30 seconds to make even back in 97. Oldowas room is the same

    It was found out that the development team actually started backwards and worked their way to the beginning from the end.
    Basically, they first started development in ganons castle and ended around kokiri forest. As they where working down, they tested elements that would and wouldnt work with what they already made. If it broke something or didnt fit and work, it got scrapped or had to rework the entire map and elements. Its a VERY touch and go development method, thus explains alot of cut content. It might be the ONLY time they ever done this style since they stopped doing it once they started majoras mask. Its VERY time consuming and majoras mask couldnt afford that style.
    also, the forest temple maybe the first dungeon created, if your not counting ganons castle.

      That may explain why Miyamoto said Ocarina of Time started with a similar structure to Mario 64, with the game having a central hub that the player continuously returns to and they can choose what area they want to play next. Funnily enough, it seems Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom reincorporated that idea, with Tears of the Kingdom having Lookout Landing being a pseudo central hub of sorts.

    I wonder how many beta maps are actually test maps. Like, was the first trailer with the dungeon where Link found the triforce a test map for trailer purposes, or was it actually a dungeon meant to be used but they never found a use for it after the trailer?

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  3 місяці тому

    • @Knightmessenger
      @Knightmessenger 2 місяці тому

      @TheObsessiveGamer how would that have even worked?
      I think that while other beta maps were simply less refined or looked more like rough drafts, the beta water temple seemed to have a different architectural style and theme. Like the devil changed their mind about the overall concept. That's why I wish it was talked about more.
      The beta deku tree was very different but the textures looked pretty much the same, it was changed for difficulty and story reasons but not really for theming.
