    If you use the return input of the amp, the signal goes thru the presence and depth circuit and that shape the tone, that's why yout IR sounds different from the original cab, you need to use a flat power amp to reamp the sweep and achieve a most realistic IR, your video is great and helps a lot, just my 2 cents to make it better yet. Saludos!!!

      While this is true, the main problem is the torpedo captor and it’s absolutely terrible impedence curve compared to a real amp. Had he been using the driftwood loadbox or st rock or suhr, this problem wouldn’t have been near and glaring.

    • @JustinHeronMusic

      @@joeblow1229 What terrible impedence problem?

    • @joeblow1229
      @joeblow1229 2 роки тому

      @@JustinHeronMusic the torpedos low end impedence curve is nothing more than a low shelf around 200 hz or so. This is absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing like the real curve of a 4x12 cabinet, or any cabinet. Guitar cabinets often have a very peaked Frequency around 90-120 hz. The two notes products do this because it would take much much more expensive filter caps to create the “true” impedence of a speaker cabinet, thus raising their prices, or at the very least cutting into their profit margin. I’m glad this is getting exploited though, because not all load boxes are the same in the least, nor are they all accurate. A homogenous low shelf is not going to give you low end like a speaker cabinet in the least.

      Also the comparisons weren’t loudness matched.

    What I liked is the fact you capture your amp sound as well, since it's not a flat solid state like the general recommendation.

    You recorded the sweep through the power amp, and also played back your guitar part through the same power amp, so you doubled its characteristic (not linear). Either try recording the IR example after the preamp of your guitar amp (FX loop out, bypassing the power amp) instead, or use a linear solid state power amp for your cab to record the IR sweep.

    • @nishadnadkarni7874

      You can't connect the preamp output directly to the speaker cab. The power amp drives the speaker and delivers enough power to the speaker to drive it and make it loud. And the output transformer is meant to impedance match with the speaker input. Your pre amp won't be able to impedance match and deliver power to the speaker. You'll get a low powered output and an unmatched impedance which could probably cause reflections that might not be good for the preamp. Best to use a solid state power amp that's flat or a tube amp that's as flat as possible.

      He's referring to the IR example. Instead of using the power amp, he is suggesting take the signal from the effects send. That way the Cab vs IR comparison is more accurate.

    Thanks for this. I just want to record the reverb from my large bedroom and use it in my small bedroom.
    So I can play guitar in the small bedroom but have the reverb of the large bedroom which I like. Cool.
    Though using my phone to record the laptop sound, very cheap set up, but it may colour the sound less I hope!

    Great tutorial man! One question though.. I see that you don't use a reamp box. Do you know the impedance of the FX loop return on your amp? meaning.. are you not using a reamp box on purpose? Or would you recomend I use one to be more precise? I could buy or borrow one, I just wan't to know how how necessary those are. Thanks!

    The captors with ir sounds fizzy and lacks low end. This is due to not capturing the distortion and harmonics and compression of the speaker. Have been using torpedo stuff for years and IR’s and they all sound different from the original source. That’s what you always need some tweaking on the amp and or eq after to bring out some of the lost touches and frequencies. I also ad a tiny bit of room reverb to get that feel from a miced cabs early reflections.

    • @joeblow1229
      @joeblow1229 2 роки тому

      It’s because two notes impedence curves on
      Their products is absolute garbage compared to a real amp or a better load box. This is the problem. Not capturing harmonics or speaker compression is not the issue. If it were, all IR’s would be this drastically different from the source, and they aren’t. Get rid of the two notes.

    I don't know... Maybe I'm doin something wrong... I've followed each step, got the files I need, but for some reasons after processing the file with Voxengo, the IR results to be completely silent... I can't even see the spectrum of it when I load it in my IR Loader... Have you any idea about what I could've done wrong?

    What's a good way of normalizing the volume on the recorded tone sweep? If you're trying to get IRs of multiple mic positions you want to try to make sure the volume is consistent, I assume.

  • @mick6084
    @mick6084 6 років тому +2

    You have to subtract the frequency spectrum of the head signal to get the spectrum of the cabinet, that's why it does not sound similar.

      @pseudmaged 6 років тому +2

      I do run my studio monitors from the L+R outputs but that's what's confusing when it comes to making IRs. I guess I was always worried using the L+R wasn't safe or something. Thanks again!

    I plan on using a laptop to send the sweep out to my SS poweramp at the same db as my ENGL preamp hits the input of it. And capture the IR w/ a USB mic into my desktop PC running Reaper. Do you for see a problem going that way? I have a Mooer Radar on it's way now and want to capture my Rack amps tone.

    At what volume and EQ settings does the amp need to be set? Very interested in trying this, as I have a custom built cab and it'd be nice to match the sound of my cab for late night silent jams after the family is asleep.

    • @johannkorn1780
      @johannkorn1780 4 роки тому

      Your EQ and channel volume doesnt matter because these are parameters of the preamp section of your amp. The impulse response is merely the sonic footprint of your power amp, cab, and microphone (youre feeding the test tone signal into the fx return after all and from there it goes directly to the power amp section and out through your cab). If you have a master volume on your amp you set it to the spot at which you think your amp sounds best and then do the IR recording. Same goes for Presence and Resonance controls, those will also be printed to your IR because they are part of the power amp section. The idea of the IR is after all that you feed the preamp signal from your amp (from the fx send or preamp out if your amp has one) to your audio interface and into the computer where it'll go through an IR loader loaded with the IR you just created that will then in turn do the same stuff to the signal that usually your power amp + cab + mic do, which means that you'll still be able to fully control your preamp EQ afterwards. I hope that made sense

    What was the point of getting a tone you like if your running it through your FX return anyways. The only EQ that would effect the power amp would be Presence and Resonance??? And for those that dont know the fx loop is after the preamp before the power amp so im not sure why you would dial in anything other than Resonance and Presence. But dont misunderstand me, im still learning so please drop some knowledge if im missing something.

    • @tjf5348
      @tjf5348 3 роки тому

      Old post but I'll reply in case anyone else is confused. By "find a sound you like" he means in relation to the mic placement on the speaker and not the EQ on the amp. For example if you put the mic on the edge of the speaker the IR created from the tone is going to come out more bass heavy and might not be desirable. This is good to keep in mind though because in theory you can do multiple IRs of the same speaker cab with different mic placements and simulate multi-mic setups by loading multiple IRs. You can even experiment with different rooms and different mics. For example it might not be a bad idea to do an IR of something like an SM57 or a E609 close up near the center of the speaker and a 2nd IR with a condenser mic a foot or two away to capture room ambiance. You can even mic the back of the cab if you have an open back and capture an IR for that to mix in as well.

    Some questions. What's the purpose of the empty space at the end? Does it matter how long or short it is? And why do you "export" the WAV rather than just use the raw recorded WAV to make the impulse response?

    • @JimmyBlimps
      @JimmyBlimps  6 років тому +1

      1. Dunno lol but for me and others it just doesn't work without it.
      2. Doesn't seem to matter, no.
      3. I hadn't thought of that! Would probably work just the same.. would have to test.
