Our Bee Academy is working to find the solution to the mystery of washboarding. I used one of my students with two hives and play with my hypothesis . I found out that the Washboarding is a type of communication between internal resident bees . It is not cleansing or daily show off. We play with the factors of my Hypothesis and amazingly we change the size of washboarding up to stopping stage. We are still working on my hypothesis. Thanks For video

Not a word about what Dr. Seeley was right about.
Look at the time the bees washboard. Mostly when they have nectar stored and all other aspects of colony life are well. I see washboarding as a type of bee yoga. They are content. The hive mind is at ease. Chances are there is a derth and not much to forage so the sit and create art. Bees don't just washboard outside, they also do it inside.
I noted they dong it inside as well. I like your interpretation of the behaviour. Bees are artists for sure.
@@InsideTheHiveTV That would bee the question that I was going to ask, is it done on the inside? I believe that they are dealing with moisture damage in the hive. They are just after a flow and the hive is now drying the nectar down. The hive is getting moisture damage (mold and rot), there are now bees with nothing to do, so they are getting the wood rot out because rotting wood holds moisture.
Speaking of at last time mine did this a couple years ago they left white wax covering the whole brood box and medium
I've been beekeeping for 10 years and every year the wash boarding always begins within 2 weeks of the start of the dearth in July (Mid Hudson Valley of NY State). I give them pollen patties inside the hive, and the wash boarding stops.

Perhaps they are cleaning their nest surface from bacterial & fungal spores... and they do this whenever they feel there are too much fungi spore in their nest. It is like we humans scratch our back whenever there's too much dead skin on our back, we feel the itch, then we scratch. Anyone researched about this?
That does seem very plausible. I've heard it said that they collect swimming pool water instead of rain or other water because they use the chlorine content in it as a cleaning solution in the hive. I've always wondered if there was a good reason for why they prefer swimming pools sometimes when other permanent water sources are available. I wonder if there's a clever way to assess the potential reasons for washboarding that you are suggesting.
We have measured a ph decrease post washingboarding both inside and out. H202 also increases.
@@TheeInjun I'd always heard they prefer swimming pool water due to the nutrients and salts from urine therein. Mark Rober's video "How to Measure How Much Pee is in Your Pool" (to some degree) supports this. Spoiler Alert: It's more urine than you may think.
My bees will not touch buckets, bird baths nor barrels of tap water I fill with tap water, despite its higher chlorine levels than my neighbor's pool. Would be valuable to see research on this topic since we beekeepers universally struggle with bees drinking at neighboring pools.
@@TheeInjun Dear Thee, The bees collect water at the edge of the water at the point where it is ready to evaporate. At that point there is no chlorine. Cl is a gas. A very light, inert
gas. Bees do not bring cl contaminated water back to the hive.

Washboarding is very simple. A great deal of the pollen that the bees bring back is very small, like dust. You don’t need to over complicate The wash boarding. They are simply picking up the minute particles of pollen that are deposited at the entrance and the landing board. I have watched this filmed in slow motion with my own iPhone. That is exactly what they are doing. It is simple housekeeping, but they are also picking up food at the same time. I see it a lot on hot days when bees are also found in the hive, but keeping themselves busy cleaning up the pollen dust. Nothing mysterious at all about it to me.
This is exactly what I think washboarding is all about, just from sitting and watching them.
Except.....they only do it near the entrance. Theres minute pollen everywhere on my hives, especially the top, but no bees up there. My bees were washboarding on two of my hives yesterday, in orderly lines and columns and about a foot square area around the opening. I suspect there is more than one answer for this behavior.

Thats right Tim. Its a huge stress reliever spending time and working with the bees.
Wash Boarding looks like busy work but there seems to be no consistency in this behavior. I had two hives this year that when we had a slow down in nectar the bees wash boarded the entrance all day long until a rain brought the forage back and I have seen them bearding some what but not wash boarding since. Reminded me of when I was in the navy with free time. Swab the decks matey.
It is a intriguing behaviour. More work to do.
I noticed something the other day with the washboarding. I put the entrance reducer in but left a few millimeters gap. They seemed to be washboarding and filling over the few millimeters.

Ive noticed washboarding occurs during times the flowers are all there but its too hot for the flowers to release nectar. The bees are anxious to work but have no bees dancing a direction to a nectar source. If you simply place a feeder of syrup out there it stops immediately all over the apiary!
I've watched my colony washboard and it seemed to me as a show of force, maybe to warn robber bees not to mess around here

I am not a beekeeper or scientist- just a huge fan of bees.
My initial thought is they are trying to transfer their scent onto the material.
Why do they do it more with rough surfaces than smooth ones? Well, rough surfaces have more surface area than smooth ones. Perhaps the scent of the material that they are trying to alter (to smell more like them) is stronger- more surface area = stronger scent.
Or - maybe they are trying to do the Electric Slide or Moonwalk like the King himself.

To most heat,exposure to the sun, it reminds me of a house made of wax, this noise is the air conditioning working
Maybe starting with the « evolutionary Process » should be re-evaluated and go back to thinking in terms as a « created » being!
As for board washing, I would like to know how what has been said about it applies to board washing inside the hive…?🤔
Is this generally a late summer , early fall phenom throughout the world. Seema that 99% of the time I observe it that it's always within that season.

Mine wash boarded yesterday....3 May. I dont think there are any rules here, except it needs to be warm temps and a large colony size.
The coin just dropped in the slot that it is called "washboarding" because the bee rocks as one would do over a washboard :P

My bees do that but it seem they are cleaning with propolis to keep out bacteria ,,, I shrunk my bee entrances and made them 4 inches deep with wood like a tree beehive , they spent 2-3 weeks putting a thin layer of propolis,on the inside of the long hole( entrance) then stopped and gathered more nectar , had no SHBettles and very small varamite issue, maybe because of the entrance,,, what do you think , not scientific I know 🤔

My bees run out fly around and land, like a mini swarm in front of the hives. It lasts around an hour and all the hives seem to do it a few times a week. They could be doing it more but I don't watch them all day.

@@InsideTheHiveTV a couple hundred to a thousand . It looks like orientation flights but why would so many do it at once in an established hive. I would think each new forager would take there own orientation flight by themselves but they seem to do it in batches.
@@Bri_bees It could be cleansing flights for the brood attendants. i.e. evacuating their bowels.
@@Bri_bees When a large amount of brood emerge they replace the jobs of nurse bees. The nurse bees then leave the hive to do their orientation flights to become foragers. The orientation flights take several days for each bee with more bees joining in each day. I have watched this happening multiple times during the summer season when there is a good queen laying machine inside the hive.

in My country know This washboard act. Sort of wax moths inside comb bees can't reach them. Bees don't stop when wax month go away.

That is a great question. I am not sure. I will assume other Apis might, however other insects I don't know.
