  • I'm building another giant ecosystem vivarium to attach to my current giant vivarium, Pantdora. I've begun making the plans, adding more neat fauna to our tropical ecosystem, but the process of preparation has already proven to be quite an adventure and journey on its own, perhaps foreshadowing the crazy events to that are to come when the second giant vivarium finally arrives. Hope you enjoy this 8th episode of the Second Season of my Ecosystem Vivarium Series. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

    HEY!!! I will reiterate. It didn't fail!!! Mantis oothecas have a ridiculously long gestation. I don't know if it's the longest one an insect can have, but I have hatched a number of them. One took eight months. Another took eleven. The longest took 16 months to hatch. It's varied based on the conditions for growth and then they stay until conditions are perfect to hatch and even that can be delayed. It's so hard to say when it will happen. Just get used to that little daub of spray-insulation-looking ootheca and don't hold your breath and don't blink. You'll miss it. Just like mantis mating... and eating. It's fast.
    The long mating you are witnessing is the less likely scenario. It's so cool that you got to see that. You'll probably get two or three oothecas from her as opposed to the one from the fast breeding. He really... used all the hemolymph he had. Lol. I don't know how else to say that on a channel that might have kids watching. Dude needs to rest and repair. Then again, males of most arthropod species die soon after mating. I think they give up too much or likely compromise their immune system to transfer their genetic potential. Regardless, I'm glad that's not my fate.
    The darkening of the eyes is an adaptation I've noticed for when mantises become more crepuscular. I didn't ever connect that with breeding, but maybe the change in activity focuses less on feeding and more upon migration? I love noticing the perspective of your channel. There's so much to observe.
    Spoiler:
    Holy crap! Dingo! Lol. Also, very pretty smooth front babies! I think they are. I don't know what kind of caiman that is at that size.

    • @robbybevard8034

      Commenting to draw attention to this!
      Mantis lays are meant to last through the winter and wait until it's properly warm, they can last over a year before they start actually going from goop to actual creatures. It taking a long while doesn't mean it's failed. Early warm weather can actually make them come out way too soon and then they all die when it gets cold again. It'll take the time it takes.
      I know the video creator is used to ants who go from eggs to workers almost instantly and constantly, but mantises are on a different schedule.

    This male mantis working together with you is one of the coolest things I've seen. It is so smart to only move when she's busy dealing with you trying to steal her food, and when you were pulling her away it was also clear he was getting ready for the jump. Honestly did not expect it all to go so smoothly if you intervened, I was afraid the female would get upset and react to the male emperor agressively.

    • @tamarrajames3590
      @tamarrajames3590 4 місяці тому +24

      A lot of insects are really smart, I suspect the female took the third insect, because she scented the male, and she knew she would need the extra nutrition to make many strong babies. The male knew what his job was the moment he was placed in with a strong female. He also quickly figured out that the human was helping him the first time he distracted her. The male quickly timed his movements to match those of the human
      Praying Mantises mate at the end of summer,, allowing the females to gain weight and strength, while the males are always smaller than the females, but work on speed and fitness. Mating is often the last thing a male mantis does, dying soon after inserting his sperm packet, whether she eats him or not. The males don’t actually care if he dies, as long as his body is in close enough contact to complete the exchange.
      The male’s body can still mate after his head is removed, and being devoured by the female provides extra nourishment for the eggs. If she doesn’t accept the male, she will keep him from getting near her abdomen, and typically eat him. The fact that this female stayed put, eating while she allowed him to get near enough to accomplish the fertilisation of her eggs (and didn’t try to chew his head off during it) indicates her acceptance of him.
      She will die shortly after extruding her ootheca, but there will be around a hundred mantis babies hatching out of it in the spring. Where I live, in Canada, they are born in spring and mate in the fall, that may be different in the Philippines. The males actually look for females who are thick in the abdomen, and generally large, because she will be strong and healthy, making her babies more likely to survive and thrive.🖤🇨🇦

      Right?! When she dropped her roach, I was like uh oh she's gonna get mad and eat him now. She probably still would have after the mating had they not been separated. Never in my life did I think I'd be so invested/interested in mantis' mating but here I am lol

      @@tamarrajames3590 Thanks, this is really interesting information. It baffles me how animals that are so tiny can have such intelligence, nature do be wonderful.
      By the way would you happen to know why their eyes turned purple after mating? Is it some sort of way to show they've already mated and don't want to be bothered by other mantises?

    • @tamarrajames3590
      @tamarrajames3590 3 місяці тому +1

      @@sleepymonsteraddict I suspect it is part of the flood of hormones, and to my knowledge, not all species do that. The females often mate a number of times, with each accepted male inserting his sperm packet, so it isn’t to warn off other males. Often, if the male isn’t eaten during the mating, he will simply fall off of her, and wait for her to get hungry, further ensuring strong healthy babies with his body to nourish them through her. Most mantis males give all they have in their sperm packet, and won’t mate twice.🖤🇨🇦

      If he didn't wait and compile footage over weeks before releasing it, a lot of the uploads would be pretty dull and boring with nothing happening in the tank. Maybe we'll see more uploads once he has the second big vivarium running since he'll then want to keep track of both of them at once which means more footage. However, editing together 30 minute long videos in such good quality is still a lot of work for him on top of managing all the animals and habitats he owns, so I wouldn't expect him to be uploading much more than he does now regardless.

    Regarding the beetles: The last one looks like Cetonia aurata. You might want to add some flowers to meet their dietary needs.
    Other than that: Consider to also look for beetles which stay smaller to diversify their roles in the ecosystem. If you have the chance to pick beetles specifically from plants, which you also have in Pantdora or plan to introduce to the extension, do that. They have the best chance to thrive in the vivarium. And finally: Try to diversify the groups of beetles and check especially for members of the Staphylinidae and Carabidae. Members of those families not only look unique, but some of them also feed on land planaria.

    The newborn ant, finally old enough to venture outside with her elders, was amazed by the vastness and beauty of the world around her. She marveled at the intricate tunnels and chambers of their colony, bustling with activity and purpose. As she stepped out into the open, her eyes widened in awe at the artificial skies above, glowing with a soft, warm light.
    Then, in the distance, she noticed a creature, immense and looming, watching over their tiny world from the darkness of a room beyond their enclosure. Its presence was both mysterious and intimidating. With a mixture of curiosity and trepidation, she turned to one of the older ants beside her.
    "What is that creature?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
    The older ant, wise and experienced, looked up at the towering figure. "That creature is the creator of our world," she replied calmly. "Long ago, we lived in the Outside world, a place vast and uncontrolled. It was he who brought us here, to this nurturing environment."
    "But why did he bring us here?" the young ant inquired, her curiosity piqued.
    "The creator saw potential in us," the elder ant explained. "He wanted to study our ways, to understand our society and our strengths. But to do this, he will also test us and put us in danger by the other entities that live here."

Like with other mammals we haveto remember our ethics and also bug bats tend to be smaller as the bumblebee bat (endangered) is the smallest bay and it eats insects. And micro bats are primarily incetavors… and not many bats survive in captivity longer then a year especially insectivores. He goes over this in the vivarium episode where he gives us the options.
