  • The literary world has lost a huge voice in the culture; author and hip-hop critic Greg Tate has passed away in New York City.
Tate, known for his work at “The Village Voice,” was able to provide a view that allowed readers to feel his perspective inside and out.
In 1992, he published his first book, “Flyboy in the buttermilk,” which was a collection of essays that would serve as what he called “a little something of a tool kit” for generations to come.
Duke University professor Dr. Mark Anthony Neal joins Marc Lamont Hill on “Black News Tonight” to talk about the life and legacy of Tate.
All this and more on “Black News Tonight.”

Brother Tate once wrote an article about MILES DAVIS...somewhat unflattering. I approached him in the street. We spoke about it & he patiently listened to my point of view.

One of the many things he did and should not be overlooked is his involvement with Dance. Him and I ( with Butch Morris), started Dance Conduction which we later called Burnt Sugar Danz.. First piece we did as combined groups was RITES at Central Park Summer Stage in 2002. he also composed for several dance pieces and worked with choreographers such as SBB Birds, of Stefanie Batten Bland.and Francesca Harper ( artistic director of Ailey 2) and more. He truly was a giant and we in the dance world, and film world, also miss him dearly.

Beyond this conversation of so-called black ideas in our culture. Genius, and I don't speak this lightly. The Rites: a take on Stravinsky with guitarist Peter Cosey. Formerly of the Miles Davis Band and Chess Records. Who also played with Muddy Waters, Billy Stewart, even Maurice White. Again, Genius. Our Creator's Peace with you, Gregory.
