  • Here's a detailed tour of the Casio CT-670, a not-particularly-well-known keyboard, but a great one - certainly a strong statement of its time! Great 90's sounds and a lot of surprising features.

    The first keyboard I ever bought as a 16 yr old. Took me months of saving at my job in an industrial laundry - taught me all the beginnings of synth playing and a year later I went on to buy my first "real" synth, an Ensoniq SQ1.

    Thanks for this. Earlier this week a friend messaged me and my shanty singing friends asking if anyone wanted a free keyboard. The picture identified it as a CT 670 so I did a little search on UA-cam. Your video seems the most informative. I replied to my friend saying to give the others first refusal but I was interested. I have a few other keyboards in addition to my upright overstrung piano, including an old Casiotone 202, Casio HT700 (which I have yet to figure), Privia PX160 and a Yamaha PSR A50. It only seemed fair others should have an opportunity if they wanted their first keyboard!
    Anyway, I got it. Delighted that it came with a case and a stand. It emerged that my friend was helping with a house clearance and red stickered items were to be thrown out; he intervened. Hard to believe it was going to be dumped.
    My power supply from my Casiotone 202 was compatible and I'm happy to report all seems to function perfectly. There's a little crackling on the volume slider but I put that down to a bit of dust. I've since sent off for a volume pedal, sustain pedal and its own power supply.
    My friend wonders if it can be used to supplement our sound for gigs. Given that I already have a guitar and melodica to lug/play, and have all the vocal paraphernalia to transport (plus a small PA we tend to use as a monitor) I'm not sure how he thinks I can manage that!
    Practically it seems a simple keyboard to control. Being raised as a pianist, the lack of touch response feels a little odd and I'm hoping I can learn to use the volume pedal to alter dynamics. Another negative about playing live - we tend to stand, so operating two pedals is a little impractical.
    All this said, I feel so lucky to have acquired this keyboard. I must think of a gift for my friend. He does like rum (it seems fitting for a shanty singer who wears a tricorn and plays a cajon) although an engraved glass tankard would endure longer!

    My brother and I were given this model as a holiday gift at the end of 1990. I would still have it today only I suspected it did not have touch response and didn't really try hard enough to find it out for sure. I let it go after 1997, when I got another synthesizer (an Alesis QS6) which definitely had touch response.

    we have two of these in the studio, still like new. they're gr8 when processed thru a trancemogrifier module, one of the crystal matrix synth modules we have, and/or flanger. has a lot of fantastic sounds. some of the early casio range are essential for some of our artists, particularly, some of the tone-bank bells...run those thru a flanger, and it kicks the cosmic sounds into hyperspace....

      If I was having this problem, I'd open the back of it and extend the wires from the good speaker over to the bad speaker so you get sound from both. It'll be a mono signal, but this keyboard doesn't do much stereo stuff anyway. You can still hear stereo in the headphones.

    • @gearfacts

      Yep, I definitely think so. And here's why: Apart from being a nice simple intro to piano, it also gives you a basic introduction to the world of synthesizers, and also to electronic connection with other instruments (MIDI). There's a lot it can teach you. It's also old enough to be cheap but advanced enough to still be interesting.

    My first Keyboard I believe I purchased during the late 80’s or early 90’s and it is still in great shape. Have a question to anyone who can answer it. Has anyone connected this keyboard through MIDI to another keyboard. I own a later model Roland VR09 Keyboard and would like to connect it to this keyboard using the Roland as the Master Keyboard and my Casio as the Slave Keyboard essentially creating a Double Keyboard using a double keyboard stand having the Roland Keyboard up top and using my Casio as the lower Keyboard. What do you think?

    • @gearfacts
      @gearfacts  2 роки тому +1

      Yep I’ve done connections like that before and I highly recommend it. The VR09 will push the Casio right to its limits and you’ll get some interesting results.

      @ffas23 2 роки тому

      @@gearfacts Thanks for the encouragement. I saw MIDI located on a switch on the top left of the Casio CT 670. Being I never connected anything in MIDI before I am assuming that switch should be in the MIDI position am I correct when I plug all jacks into the MIDI sockets. I will look for my manual also to see if anything is mentioned about it. I will report back here to let all know the results ASAP.

    • @ffas23
      @ffas23 2 роки тому

      I gave it a try today using brand new Midi Cables went from MIDI OUT from the Roland VR-09 to MIDI IN of the Casio CT670. Put the slide switch to MIDI on the Casio CT 670. Actually tried every position on the Casio but MIDI didn’t work. The Casio no matter what position it was in only played what was in the Casio. The VR-09 sound in organ or piano would not reproduce through the Casio’s Keys. I am disappointed. I even put the VR-09 in MIDI on the Menu and it made no difference. I guess I will have to keep asking around. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

    Hello, can you help me? The Tone Editor seems to have some problems, just Attack and Release are working. Any idea what to do?

      Sometimes the other two buttons appear to do nothing, but you have to hold them down for much longer than you'd expect. Try a really long press while you are playing some notes :) #gearfacts

    do you know the exact name of the 5 pin midi wire this takes? ive been looking everywhere for it

      I've always referred to it simply as a "MIDI cable". I've heard some people say "MIDI DIN cable". Hope that helps :)

    • @gearfacts
      @gearfacts  5 років тому +1

      I think it can only transpose +/- 6 semitones, so the only way you could do it would be to buy a pitch-shifting guitar pedal (I think)

    I found one but got no batteries or adaptator. Does any 9v adaptator do the job?

    • @gearfacts
      @gearfacts  6 років тому

      It has to be a DC adapter and I believe the polarity was centre negative. The easiest way to get it right is to go to an electronics store and buy a 9 volt DC adapter with the multiple plugs included in a kit. Then you'l definitely find the right combination. Don't worry about getting it wrong the first time, you can't damage the keyboard (or at least it would be extremely difficult to). Good luck! Gearfacts

      It takes a Casio AD 5 adapter 9v center negative. Replacements are available on Ebay for about $7.

    I have a question about the tone editor feature.
    On my CT-670 when I switch the mode selector over to MIDI the tone editor no longer does anything. Is this normal behavior for the CT-670? Tone editing works fine on the two chord modes, just not on MIDI.
    Were the sounds in your video where you sequenced the CT-670 with MIDI all presets?

    • @gearfacts
      @gearfacts  6 років тому

      Yep, I didn't have any problems like what you describe. I have no answers I'm afraid :( Gearfacts

    • @AuroraNovalis
      @AuroraNovalis 6 років тому

      To clarify: yes you are able to edit the tones of presets while you have MIDI enabled on your CT-670, or yes enabling MIDI prevents the tone editor from affecting the preset sounds?
      If the first case is true I'll see about opening up my keyboard and checking for some sort of broken internal connection.

    • @gearfacts

      It's a really weird delay effect, i think it's actually triggering another sound, just at a lower velocity. Thanks for watching Gearfacts :)
