Hi, Hiding the damp with a false wall does not fix the damp, like you said.. By leaving the damp hidden it could potentially cause structural issues. The render/plaster on your walls may be preventing the bricks from breathing. If so you would need to remove and put a breathable water repellent on the bricks like "stormdry".. Then re plaster with a breathable render lime based. Ventilation is needed.. Nb.. When I lived in Jamaica, I would use RAID.. Always worked.. But you need to spray the whole place, with all windows and doors shut.. Go out for a few hours till it settles.. You will find they leave or all die off over a few days
Stumbled upon this channel as I’m headed Madeira way September with la familia. Congrats on the house!! Seeing someone starting off a new life in a small realistic way is kind of endearing and I’m wishing you the best of luck settling in! You asked for some video ideas in one of your vids. Best places to eat, best things to do, best hikes, best places to shop.
Madeira is interesting as the wetness & humidity combined can cause similar issues to old UK houses with damp walls, rot etc. I also see a lot of houses built on hillsides, and i can only imagine when it rains heavy how troublesome that could be :P
Hi just make sure some of the mold on wall next to the fridge the source of that could be from outside and if its is, of course treated the origin of the problem first ,dont know what they use in Portugal but the paint depto on leroy could provided with a good product and whatever its is it has to be something that dont absorve water and (seal the wall from water).I have a feeling that problem could come from outside after use the products like plaster proper for this problem ,make sure u seal it. Removed mold is just temp fix always look for the source.Lack of ventilation is a good source for mold ,so a desumidifier is good tool after you vent the place, uses timer or better yet if u have internet buy wifi outlet so u can control a electric fan or a desumidifier, schedule them in case you have to keep the house close( a trip) .Hope this helps and always talk to the natives they always is your best source.
"I'm going to put him in the garden...not my garden!" That made me laugh.🤣 You have a very nice house for what you paid and those problems don't seem too bad so far. Best of luck!
Hi, you have a lovely Home. What is behind the damp wall on the outside of the storage room? It appears to me, that the problem cannot be fixed from the inside.
About the mold on your walls and height humidity in your house. Basically you need ventilation! I was in Madeira two times, love this island and I noticed that they cannot make proper ventilation. In most location there is mechanical ventilation - when you turn on the light in bathroom. So when you leave the bathroom, turn off the light, ventilation stops. Humidity stays there and nothing can dry. This is the first step to have the mold. The best and the cheapest is gravity ventilation. Read about that. In flat or house the air cannot stand, it must be exchanged. Do not listen to the builders, you cannot build outer layer on the wall in the room where the refrigerator stays. You will only cover mold with another layer. After some time you will have the same situation, maybe worse. The plaster is soaked with mold. The best way is to remove plaster from walls (I don't know if it is the proper word) until you will see bricks. Then you have to DRY! and disinfect the wall. After that put the new plaster on the wall. Think about the gravity ventilation in that room (maybe some small hole in the top of the outer wall of a building). Check that the water does not trickle down the outside wall. This will further add to its moisture content. Remember that mold on the walls is not good for health
I am an hvac engineer and I work with ventilation and indoor environement from time to time. I am partly agree with MarekP.. Ventilation could be a good thing but you need to be careful with the solution. If you ventilate with the humid Madeira air in to the rooms, where the rooms are colder than your outside air, the humidity problem will increase. Warm air contains a lot of humidity/water and when this cool down in your house the humidity will get to water on your cool walls. The ventilation fan/planty have to contain a cooling unit so the air dries before it comes in to your house.
Hi! I recently discovered your channel and subscribed immediately. I started years in lots of places. Glew, in Buenos Aires province, Buenos Aires city, and Tigre in Argentina, Punta del Este in Uruguay, Hamburg in Germany, and so on. But 2022's New Year was as a widower in Coimbra. I felt it very very nice. 2023 in Funchal for the world-famous fireworks was a little bit too touristy, but the following week in Santa Cruz blew my mind. I love Portugal (I hate big cities like Lisbon and Porto, ppl get crazy during the rush hour). Madeira is a gem. I'll try to live there in 2024 or 2025. I think Madeira's banana line is heaven on earth. I have an enormous number of places to compare. Your experiences will be nice for me. As a multiple home owner, I also have a lot of experience with buildings and structure design, so I think it will be a vey nice journey.
@@Livinginmadeira Yes, I must humbly say it's incredible. It sounded strange to me until on July 4th, 2022. I read a clinical study on getting comfortable with NDE´s. From looking at your video i would say you probably need an in-ground drainage system in the back of your house, to divert water away from your home and stop it from seeping under your walls. Looking forward to future vlogs, i'm hooked.. :-) !! 👍
Hi! Agree that covering that mold up is a bad idea. It will continue growing underneath that exterior layer, and is bad for your health. You're adventurous for climbing up on that roof! If you are thinking about taking out that wall going into the new dining room, you should consider taking down the wall separating the kitchen from the old dining room, for a more open floorplan. I am looking forward to seeing what you do with your new home. Cheers!
The best way to get rid of that type of cockroaches is to dust your house with boric acid powder. Board acid will kill them and also kill all the ones in the nest. The best way to get rid of them!!!!!!
A most useful 'tour' indeed. Despite the problems that seems to be quite a decent place with a fair amount of space :). I reckon if you start charging Brian some rent then that will help fund any DIY and renovations you have to do - tell him it's either start contributing to the household budget or it's RAID time :D.

Please please please may I ask a question? We're hoping to move to Portugal (possibly Madeira or somewhere near Porto), but we have two cats! My husband says it will be absolutely impossible to find a rental property that allows pets, unless it's mega expensive or charge a lot on top for the pets. What is your experience if you have any or noticed anything? I'm desperately wanting to keep my cats 😭 (both have passports, vaccinations, were from EU). Thank you ❤
Hey, lots of people have pets here in Madeira, so I don’t anticipate it will be too difficult to find a rental. I would suggest looking on Facebook marketplace - rooms listed tend to be cheaper and there is a higher change you will be talking directly to the landlord, who hopefully will be more flexible than an estate agent. Wishing you all the best of luck and don’t be discouraged!
A water repellent should do the trick here after removing all the material plaster from the wall, look for products use in swimming pools for water repellent, proper ventilation is key here, be extremely careful and use proper protection wear when treating, removing and disposal of mold is very toxic for your health... I think the house has good potential value to making it your own style on the other hand as price related I would have asked for a discount if knowing beforehand theses issues of water leaks and water begs etc. On the water begs I would check for any broken water drain pipes theses begs come from sewer pipes, Good luck I like your videos thanks!

What? No way. He has not earned the right to reside there. He is a freeloader looking for handouts. What skill set could he possibly possess that would earn him a steady paycheck? It's time for him to hit the road.
4 parts water 1 part Clorox bleach.. spray bottle. Spray the surface where the mold is at and watch it disappear almost instantly. You can always add more bleach to get a better result if need be. This will work...!
Yeah so, I commented on your most recent video... You really have to fix the drainage around your house. Probably dig a trench along the entire rear wall (whatever is below grade, maybe the side too) and drain it, then seal it and rebuild a new waterproofing layer on top of that. Otherwise you'll never get rid of the mold issue. You could even sustain structural damage. Like you have to do this properly... Don't just try to hack it on the cheap. You need a full depth trench, drainage system and professional waterproofing. - Read up well on this - Get several quotes - you have to inspect the work they do at every critical step (you really have to)
Damn it. I would die from such a cockroach! I can't imagine how you keep it so close. I wonder if there is any solution to get rid of the complete zero in such a house? I've been living in a condo in Thailand for half a year now and there hasn't been a single cockroach in all that time. It is obvious that the management company is poisoning them with something. Since I moved out of another condo on the 14th floor because there were such huge cockroaches and I couldn't sleep.
Cockroaches can be the worst! 😅 Here in Madeira, I’ve found that sealing cracks and keeping things super clean helps ( a little). Sounds like your condo in Thailand has great pest control-wish it was always that easy!
Spray the nest with soap and water: Mix two tablespoons of dish soap into a spray bottle of water and spray it on the nests. The mixture will clog the wasps' breathing pores and kill them instantly.
Non-professional opinion: but I think your humidity issues and leaks are related. Depending on your finances, I would replace roof first and have the structure inspected-there may be wood rot if it was used in the construction. I would look at adding windows to that space to not only provide ventilation but also sunlight. I also think the walk, if built with breezeblocks could be holding water. Also, in regards to the squatters, they are essentially water bugs and are probably attracted to the humidity. Take care of the humidity will help with them as well.
