  • Twenty minutes before the park closed for the day at midnight Christmas Eve I found myself the only person in line for the attraction, which provided me the chance to make this recording without worrying about crowds. You'll also get a glimpse of the Hatbox Ghost, which was just added.
    Camera: iPhone 15 Pro Max.

    The Haunted Mansion opened at Magic Kingdom Park® in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, as an original attraction on October 1, 1971. Like all of the versions across Disney Parks, it has its own differences from the original that opened at Disneyland® in 1969. Unlike its Disneyland counterpart, Magic Kingdom does not do any holiday "overlays" on this attraction.

    Thank you for this. My Mom wanted to visit the Haunted Mansion ever since she first heard about it, but Dad wanted nothing to do with going to Disney. After he passed away I said something to Mom about Disney and she said "why don't we go?".
    So we did, Mom got to go through the Haunted Mansion twice, and the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. She loved Haunted Mansion. I so wish I could share this video with her, she'd get a big kick out of it, but we lost her last October.

      I grew up in Southern California and my first apartment was a half-hour walk from Disneyland so of course I had the $199 Premium Annual Pass (I moved to Florida just before they broke ground for DCA), and there was a beloved cast member named Maynard who did everything from Jungle Cruise Skipper to (his best role) host for The Haunted Mansion. "Make like marshmallow, go SQUISHY SQUISHY!" in the stretching room (which at Disneyland is a working elevator to ride level).

    My wife and I rode the Mansion all by ourselves once during the first Pirates And Princesses Party at WDW. Its absolutely amazing how the sound quality changes when there aren't hundreds of noisy human bodies creating sound.
    Also: the flip of the Doom Buggy just before the graveyard is great for cracking a tired old man's back after a long day of walking the Kingdom.

    There is a line included in the Disneyland version of this ride that isn't in the Florida version and I kinda miss it: When the Ghost Host says, "We have 999 Happy Haunts here, but there's room for a thousand. Any volunteers?", right after it on the Disneyland version he says, "If you insist on lagging behind, you may not _need_ to volunteer."

    My sister and I had a wonderful Haunted Mansion treat a few months ago. We sat in a doom buggy with a front panel that wouldn’t properly lock into place. We had no clue. But, obviously the computer system recognized that a buggy wasn’t properly locked! The ride suddenly stopped close to the hallway of haunted doors. Two employees came to our doom buggy to graciously help us exit the doom buggy and walk off the ride. We were left alone to walk through a side door, where we then explored and transversed through the dimly lit back rooms, stairways and old hallways of the Haunted Mansion! It was incredible! What struck me was how OLD and dusty these back rooms and stairways were. It looked like these places hadn’t been painted or touched since the day this ride opened. It was kind of creepy and weird. We finally found a door that exited us into the bottom crypt area off the side of the mansion. We were SO excited to be able to see this original art up close and personal. We took pictures to document what we saw. It was literally a once in a lifetime experience that happened by chance. We felt like we’d won the lottery for getting seated in that broken doom buggy. Lol 😂

      The closest I've ever gotten to something like that was being escorted off the TTA PeopleMover after one of its frequent breakdowns.
      When I was a Disneyland AP in the late '90s they had passholder parties after hours where, among other things, they allowed guests to walk through the dark rides (Snow White, Pinocchio, etc.) to look at things up close. The parties stopped for a long time after the "Light Magic" fiasco in '97. (Also, according to rumor, people were constantly stealing the little Jimminy Cricket figures off of Pinocchio.)

      I grew up near Disneyland and was an AP in the late 90s before California Adventure was built (I moved to FL in 2000), and one got to know nearly all the regular cast members and their schedules, which made it a truly fun time. Also learned a lot of things "behind the scenes" and "easter eggs" in many of the attractions. (There were some "adult" moments and cameos by Walt himself in "America the Beautiful", just one example).

      @GloriouslyAwkwardLife  3 місяці тому

      The original Hatbox Ghost was installed next to the Bride in the attic scene in Disneyland's original but was shortly removed after the attraction's opening in 1969 because other lighting effects nearby and the proximity to the ride vehicle didn't allow the visual effect of its head moving between its shoulders and the hatbox to work as intended (it was done using alternating blacklights at the time). Putting it back on the attractions some 45 years later is more fan service than anything else because there were always the stories that it existed.

    Wow never have I seen any Disney park THAT empty, much less the Magic Kingdom. I've been all the way to closing before, in fact after closing because I was on a ride/queue when the park closed, granted they still leave the shops open for a bit afterwards but yikes... that was actually kind of scary how empty it was. I guess it being Christmas eve even the Disney diehards were like "time to go home"

    • @GloriouslyAwkwardLife
      @GloriouslyAwkwardLife  3 місяці тому +1

      The HM at MK is kind of buried at the back of Liberty Square, so it's not unusual to have little to no wait time toward park closing (BTW, if you see the wait time set to "13" minutes, it's a walk-on). Christmas Eve also it slows way down as families go back home or to their hotels for holiday celebrations; you get a similar (but not as marked) effect on Thanksgiving Eve.

      I grew up near Disneyland (was a passholder in the late 90s before I moved to Florida) and it wasn't unusual to have a lot of rides to oneself when the park would close late (midnight or sometimes 1 AM). It also wasn't unusual for the park to move up its closing time on little notice (announced in the park) when there was hardly anyone in the park or there was inclement weather.

      Trivia: While the stretching room in Disneyland's version is actually an elevator down to the second level of the ride, the one in Florida is not. Magic Kingdom actually had to be built UP to accommodate its "Utilidors" "underground" because of Florida's high water table. Part of the Seven Seas Lagoon was created when they dredged out the dirt to build the park up.

      The official name for the "Doom Buggies" are "Omnimovers," a technology that Disney patented in 1968. It's used in several attractions:
      - The Haunted Mansion (California, Florida, Tokyo, and Paris [as Phantom Manor]; Shanghai does not have the attraction; Hong Kong's Mystic Manor uses a trackless ride vehicle)
      - Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters (California, Florida, Tokyo, Paris, and Shanghai; unique in that users control the rotation)
      - The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure (Disneyland and Magic Kingdom)
      - Spaceship Earth (EPCOT)
      - The Seas with Nemo and Friends (EPCOT, can only rotate because there is insufficient room under the track for tilting)
      - Ant Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle (in Hong Kong; rethemed from Buzz Light Year Astro Blasters)
      Journey Into Imagination with Figment (EPCOT) is a modified version of the system that does not move continuously but stops to load and unload.
      Outside of Disney, a similar ride system is called the "Endless Transit System."

    • @GloriouslyAwkwardLife
      @GloriouslyAwkwardLife  3 місяці тому +1

      This is not new audio; each version has its own unique voice-over as each attraction has a different ride course and (in the case of Paris and Hong Kong) a different story. Some examples of Florida parts that are different in Disneyland's:
      - The "stretching room" effect is done in Florida by raising the ceiling, while DL's is a working elevator where the bottom half descends down to boarding level.
      - Florida added music room and library segments, which make the ride longer than DL's edition.
      - The portrait gallery at DL is part of the queue, while in Florida it's part of the actual ride, where it also takes passengers' pictures for PhotoPass (so much for "no flash photography").
      - The Florida version is larger, because there was much more space to work with.
      - The courtyard is larger than DL's and includes interactive elements.

Best example at Disney World is that "Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance" at DHS is practically a walk-on during "Fantasmic!", especially when there is only one show that night, because that's what everyone wants to see.

      I grew up around Disneyland and actually prefer the audio script from California over the one in Florida. The Florida script is missing some one-liners that make the California one more eerie-example, "We have 999 happy haunts here, but there's room for a thousand; any volunteers?"; in California, it's followed with, "If you insist on lagging behind, you may not _need_ to volunteer." :-)

    Still don’t like the new use of video screen images which you can tell even if not consciously - was originally all animatronics and visual tricks. In the first years after opening the graveyard scene had shrunken heads popping out behind headstones right next to you - probably too hard to maintain.

    • @GloriouslyAwkwardLife
      @GloriouslyAwkwardLife  20 днів тому

      Uh, those still exist in the graveyard and the dining room. The only major changes in Florida are the hall of mirrors and changing Madame Leota's face projection from external to internal so she can float more freely. Florida is a bit slower in changing rides than California because the former's demographic is older and more for the nostalgia of Disney.

      They weren't there when I returned in the 1990's - maybe maintenance.

      Probably because my iPhone was positioned in front of me away from the speakers behind me on the doom buggy. It's also not unusual to get a doom buggy with low audio volume, but in this case it's just device positioning.

    The imported rides from Disneyland was lost in translation in Magic Kingdom. Haunted Mansion is just not as good. Same with Pirates and Small World.

    • @cakesinspace3194

      agreed, its a small world looks like a elementary school project. The buildings are made of paper, and pirates is just reallly short and makes no sense. While they are definetly constructed better with less flaws disneyland will always have the best rides out of all parks.

      I guess they tried to make it look more friendly and kinda watered down some parts. The one on Japan is similar to the 1970s version and the one on Paris has a darker storyline.

    • @GloriouslyAwkwardLife
      @GloriouslyAwkwardLife  20 днів тому

      The one in Paris is the only one that tells the story in full. I'm just glad that here in Florida they don't do the holiday overlays like they do in Anaheim. The demographic here is significantly older/more adult, retired, &c. than in California.
