I think the most interesting feature of any footwear is its weight to durability ratio, and what you pay for said ratio. Thats why I like this barefoot trend (zero drop, less stack height and less arch support) and am probably going to try leather "barefoot" hiking boots
Excellent review! I've been asking around about shoes that have the best traction on cobblestone and limestone tile, the kind they pave their walking paths with in Europe. Your slip test really illustrated that lugs won't work on smooth surfaces, especially when it's wet. The Vibrum seems to offer the best traction on smooth surfaces. But would a flatter continental rubber outsole without lugs offer a better grip? How about PumaGrip? It's said to outdo any other outsole in the market. I'm looking to buy the Adistar 2.0 with its flat continental outsole. Would it have good traction on the smooth surface you tested?
There are two Megagrip-Versions with diverse Performance on dry and wet Rocks. Trailrunners Like Hoka always have the softer Megagrip with better Performance on dry and wet Rocks, while the Durability is less good. If a non-approach shoe Like some Boots from Asolo do have Megagrip or Like the 5.11 (nothing to do with adidas FiveTen/5.10) boot this is the less soft Megagrip with less good Performance on dry and wet Rocks, while it is more durable. We even have now Vibram XS Trek, slippery like hell vs. XS Trek EVO with more than acceptable Performance on dry and wet Rocks. The Continental Rubber Outsole of the adidas Swift R3 is one of the Most rigid ones. Reason is that the Mid-Cut Modell should be the much lighter follower of the adidas Super Trekking ForMotion. I do have these Boots. They do have a adidas Traxxion Outsole. I do See some Cuts in the Rubber I prefer Not to See. The Swift R3 Outsole won't Show those Cuts while the Performance on dry or wet Rocks is much better compared to Vibram XS Trek, the Traxxion Outsole of my adidas SuperTrekking ForMotion and Salomon Contragrip MD. Salomon Contragrip MD one of the Most durable has a really week Performance on dry and wet Rocks. The better Salomon Contragrip Starts with TD. Contragrip Like TA or MA is Always much, much more better than MD on dry and wet rocks. If you do Not scramble on hot Rock surfaces adidas FiveTen/5.10 Rubber is the best. To be worn with Socks like Falke TK2. Same with the Swift R2, while the AX3 is more comfortable and can be worn with thinner Socks. The real Killer of adidas regarding grip even on ice and Durability is the Skychaser Gen1. At the Canyoning Boot adidas Hydrolace the FiveTen/5.10 Stealth Rubber Outsole is even 3-times backed sinterred Rubber. This improves Grip on wet Rocks and durability.

Can't disagree with anything you say. Other continental soles are less durable than the R3, which seems designed for soil, scree and other terrain that's rough or loose. But the R3 sole unit is below average on the smooth or the wet. Depending on where you live it could be a deal breaker.
Point is that Not only Lowa is very successful with Vibram XS Trek, which is less good on dry and wet Rocks compared to the adidas Swift R3. Compared to Salomon Contragrip MD with Chevron lugs the rigid Rubber of the Swift R3 does not Slip and Stop it slows you down on dry and wet Rocks. In Slowenia in the Julian Alps the alpine Gravel is extremely aggressive. You even loose with Vibram XS Trek, you need Vibram Mont, which has less Grip on dry and wet Rocks than the adidas Swift R3. Regarding Durability while moving thru alpine Gravel in The Julian Alps the adidas Swift R3 is the nearest to Vibram Mont. Forget about Vibram Megagrip in the Julian Alps.

I have some Vibram Mont soled Scarpa's which I wear on rocky mountains in summer. They're durable and reliable. They're not the right pick for wet hikes around Ireland and Scotland in early Autumn or late Spring. Try hiking around the Burren in Clare in Salomon's or R3s, or Scarpa Zodiacs for that matter. It's nothing but wet limestone rock and those soles are too slippery. I'd pick the Salomon Ultras last however as they're lethally slippy. There's even a video a friend made about his terrible experience with Salomon Contagrip on such a wet rocky terrain.

Terrex is a line for both hiking and trail running. Some Terrex use a huge boost foam, which I hate for technical trails - it totally takes away my sense for loose rocks. This one doesn’t have that boost foam.
Looks like a speedgoat 5? I have hiked in R3s and Speedgoat 5 miss. You could take a speedgoat hiking on wet rock. You would be mad to do that in R3s or Salomon's. The vibram mega grip soles wear out faster but they're much less slippery in the wet.

They are OK on comfort but not excellent. Honestly, I loved hiking in the Brooks Cascadia. I did a five day hike from Bologna to Florence and wore three shoes, Cascadia, Hoka Speedgoat, and Altra Lone peak. I preferred the Cascadia.
Doing a 5 day hike in a few months. Hiking in the river a lot of the time, rock jumping. Wet shoe condition. What shoe would you recommend for this type of activity
I came because I love these shoes but find them so slippery on wet bridges or other wet surfaces. I was curious if you would come to the same conclusion.

Feet cant breath in shoes with Gore-tex. They will swim in sweat.
