Hello! There are two latches on opposite ends of the Nutrifaster N450, simply open up both latches and then you can open the top lid of the juicer.

Hello! There isn't a way to smoothen out your basket surface so you will need to replace the basket. Over time the basket and the blade cutter will wear out so you will have to replace them at some point. You can order a new basket filter on our website if you are interested.
