This was actually the first time when I could actually hear that big boomy sound from the J-200. Usually we’re being told they sound big, but kinda need to be in the room to really hear and feel it, because they don’t seem to record as well as they supposedly sound. But again, this one, this J-200, sounded amazing. And so did the L-00.
I would love to see an LG-2 though. These guitars have a unique sound and quality that you’ll only find in an LG-2. I can only imagine how good a Murphy Lab version would sound, because if there’s one this this video made clear, it’s the fact that you don’t just pay for the cool vintage looks. They sound better than most other new Gibson acoustics on the market today. ❤

If I were to fantasize about a vintage Gibson, it would be a Ren Ferguson era Doves in Flight. Most of those I’ve seen haven’t got a single scratch. Yet … I get that faux retro is its own thing and these are really class acts in their own right. As I’m a week away from 70, I wish my aging had been done by Murphy Labs instead of Father Time. But I would really love one of these instruments, maybe they are the Fountain of Youth that Ponce de León searched for.

I love the looks of these, and would buy one in a heartbeat if money was no object. I went through being very anal about my guitars when I was a younger player, cringing at the thought of the smallest scratch “ruining” my instrument. But gradually, playing out results in an ever growing collection of battle scars, none major, but there just the same. At some point, I realized that these instruments are meant for making music, not hanging in a museum. The great thing about aged instruments is that you no longer have to worry about that first scuff - it’s already there. This frees you up to use the instrument for it’s intended purpose. The best part is that they still sound just as good as the pristine ones. If only I could afford one (or several)…

I hadn’t bought a Gibson in 22 years but the Murphy lab hummingbird is something special. I picked one up a couple months ago and it is one of the best guitars I have ever owned.
Now what we NEED is a comparison between the L-00 Murphy Lab and the Waterloo WL-14. Please.

I sold my j45 because Gibson couldn’t put the scratch plate on straight and covered the rosette, I didn’t notice it for while but when I did I couldn’t live with the shabby worksmanship , so I traded it off a beautiful d28 instead. 😍

I have one and it’s the only thing that bothers me a little. But… it’s 2023 now and that guitar sounds better than it ever did. AND I bought a D-28 and then a 00-15m and a 000-18. Especially the last one is sooooo good!!!

I love QUIN-TON's analogy about the plumber. Just perfect. I generally try to buy second-hand gear, so that I don't feel as bad when I bang them into stuff. Loving guitars and being visually impaired is a heavy, and expensive, cross to bear. Plus it feels kinda cool to be a link in a chain of owners, like I'm just an instrument's current curator. History, man!

They sound great. I’m very capable of wearing a guitar in myself. If I’m paying for a new guitar, I want it to look like a new guitar. It seems like a marketing gimmick. A guitar should look worn because it’s been played.
What is strange is that my Murphy Lab Les Pauls really sounds better and plays better than my VOS... it also seems that a different lacquer was used. Much more resonance too
Can you imagine the luthiers there have to build a perfect guitar first, then other people in the factory are going to get involved in the process of aging a perfect guitar and turn it into an old looking guitar, doing some scratches there, putting a small dent here, having the varnish slightly damaged in various areas and so on...
I wish they would do not so well in the first place, neglect a few little details there and leave a guitar structurally perfectly fit, with great major elements, woods, hardware and so on, plus perfect gluing, for half or 2/3 of a standard model's price... I would dig it...
Just spoke with someone who’s dealing with aged guitars since they’re around. He claims he can straight differ between the aging scratches and the new ones…
I’m not an expert on this when it comes to acoustics, partially because I haven’t seen a new aged guitar yet. But the electrics? Easy to tell! I used to work for a guy who had a vintage guitar shop. I think they just started doing these relics back then and they just go way too far with them. I played 50’s strats and teles and yes they would have some scratches and dings and you could absolutely see the changes in colors over the years. But they were much cleaner than these ridiculous reliced guitars.
Don’t get me wrong, I like a nice relic job, but don’t overdo it please! It doesn’t make sense.
What makes even less sense is the relicing of guitars that didn’t even exist until a few years ago! WTF?!?! A reliced Novo guitar?!?! Please, this almost feels like an insult. 🤔😬
Besides the distress, Murphy Lab version sounds better or have higher quality craftsmanship?
Those guitars all sound amazing. I went and looked at them on the Gibson website and was floored by the prices ($5,499 to $7,799). Great guitars but too rich for me. The Gibson Elvis Dove (my dream guitar) seems like a bargain now. 🙂
Maybe that’s Gibson’s way of trying to nudge you into buying that Elvis Dove…😁

That j-200 sound is amazing, definitely a bucket list item. As far as the “aged” thing I agree with some other commenters, I’d rather add dings and scratches over years of playing it with my own stories behind the imperfections.
Ah, but to do that you gotta take it out of its case. A lot. And play it. A lot. And abuse it, a bit. And don't get freaked when it's knocked about, or some other dude does that for you.

Not for me. I have a few high end Martins and Taylor guitars and I made sure there were no scratches or dents at time of purchase.

Basic question but Gibson’s marketing messaging is not crystal clear - are Murphy’s Lab guitars actually CS instruments then aged by the ML team, or just prod line guitars aged?
All Gibson historic reissues are Custom Shop instruments. It makes sense that Murphy Lab aging is only found on historic replicas.
My Martin 000-28 MD looked like it had been aged just being thrown around the house in my arid climate.
Are they able to re-create the finish checking of a vintage?
They certainly can re-create finish checking.
I could see the checking at various angles as they turned/handled the guitars. Looks very realistic and vintage. Just right. I have a lot of vintage Gibsons and this looked good. Think is, the price of these is lower than the originals, but not stunningly so. An original would be a better investment.... probably.
@@Winterfell1066 Definitely a better investment, but if you want that aged look with none of the downsides of an old guitar, these are awesome. I'm very tempted.

Great sounding guitars but, being a lifetime DIY guy, I'd rather age my guitars myself by simply playing them...a lot. Think of the money I'll save doing it way.
I agree with you, as long as you’re not afraid to put those first scuffs on your guitar, it saves a lot of money doing it yourself. The problem is when folks are so fixated on keeping their instrument pristine that they forget what its actual purpose really is. They spend half of their time worrying about keeping their “baby” blemish free rather than playing and enjoying it, and allowing it to develop the same scars that we humans develop through our lives. If an aged guitar frees people from that obsession, I’m all for it.

Over priced. I don’t mind the custom shop aspect but once you put it through the Murphy Lab you can charge 2-3k more? Not for me. I’ve got a CS 36 AJ and it’s good enough for me. Like the other person said I can scratch and ding it myself over time and I’m sure I will. Great vid though 👍

I’m proud of no marks on my guitars. Think I’ll continue trying to keep it that way.
I’m actually proud of the marks on mine - it points to the well-lived life of the instrument. And it brings back specific memories of the great times I had making music. I wouldn’t trade it for the sterile look that they had when they were new. I like the fact that my guitars aged right along with me.

They look great and sound great BUT they “don’t look vintage’ and to suggest they do is a joke.
If you pay the money for one of these, you've been snorting some of the nitro chips that flaked off in the case. I played and J45 murphy lab and a new J45 back to back and the new one sounded better. The tuners are garbage on the murphy labs. Thanks but I'll put my own wear on the guitar for 1/5 the price.
Ill wear my own guitar for thousands less!

The L-00 ebony original is way better looking guitar than that murphy. Will age better and is actually value for money. Just compare the two side by side

If a company would make them I’m sure some people would buy them. There are a lot of commonalities between the guitar/musical instrument industry and the automotive/motorcycle industry, and I genuinely believe that there would be a market for “Relic” cars.
However, I don’t think it will ever happen, because of the one major difference between the guitar industry and the automotive industry. That one major difference is really the deciding factor, and it is the simple fact that a brand new Gibson Les Paul, Fender Telecaster, Martin D-28, etc. looks almost identical to one that was made 60+ years ago. Cars change (often drastically) every 5-10 years assuming the model sells well enough to stay in the lineup that long. There are numerous iconic car models from the past that would probably sell with a “Relic” finish if a company would make a new one that looked identical to the old body style. Just imagine the choices in the level of “Relic”: NOS looking like it just came out of the showroom, Closet Classic (a Fender Custom Shop term) would be a well maintained garage kept classic that is starting to show its age, then maybe another level or two before you get to the car equivalent of Heavy Relic which would be “Barn Find”. Cars like that would definitely sell if a car company could make them and sell them for less than the prices the actual original cars are bringing.
A new car is not based on a 60 - 80 year old design, so you’re really comparing apples to oranges.
