  • 🚨You’ll want a fat bike for this sandy system.
    This is a hidden gem in central New Mexico, Desert riding at its best with punchy climbs and basalt laden technical down hills and views in every direction. But it’s not for the faint of heart. Your heart will be pumping and your lungs will be busting. Recommended for experienced riders and fat bikes certainly make it more fun.
    Why fat bikes?
    With a fat bike you are not limited on the tire width. You can run up to 5 inch wide tires. And any size wheel below that if you wanted ~ 27.5+, 29+, 26, etc.
    Fat bikes are like monster trucks, the Jeep’s of the bike world. They can go anywhere and are unlimited compared to our skinny tire bikes. You can ride through all four seasons and all surface types on the same bike. With minimal trail impact. Snow, sand dunes, arroyos, cobblestone river beds, slick rock, hard pack, you name it.
    And they help build/roll in the trail. So you’re actually doing trail maintenance as you ride. Smoothing out all those skinny tire mud ruts is an extra bonus for your local singletrack.
    Our goal is to inspire more people getting outside and encouraging adding a fat bike to the quiver. Go explore more places and have less of an impact while riding in sandy softer soils. Broaden your horizons with a nice fat bike. Explore the many miles of sandy arroyos and dunes in the southwest without pizza cutting through the desert crust (“pizza cutting” increases erosion).
    Here are some fat bikes in the wild deserts of New Mexico. Keep singletrack single and tread lightly. The desert takes a very long time to heal and vegetation doesn’t recover like it does in greener areas.

    It's much better without any music. Thank you.

    I used to live in Los Lunas, on a 13 acre farm on Main Street just west of the river. In those days there was nothing west of I-25, and Route 6 would take us to my dad’s gas station out on Route 66. My brother and I used to climb up and around the volcano hunting for jack rabbits. In those days people didn’t cycle much, between goat head stickers and the glass from broken beer bottles, you couldn’t get very far.

    Being from north Idaho (lots of snow) i took my salsa Mukluk to St. George, UT (after watching your channel) for thanksgiving break. It was so fun riding on the petrified sand dunes. I hardly ride me full suspension 29er anymore. Great videos, keep it up!

    This is a valuable channel. Do a search about Fat Bikes and you seem to get stuck with snow riding. I am interested in trail/desert riding, and that is what you offer.

      Thank you, that’s part what we are hoping to do. Help people to shift their thinking. Fat bikes are not just for snow. But they are the Jeeps of the bike world. A true all terrain mountain bike. Fat bikes have been our go to bike for most of our riding these days. And you can always put in a smaller tire/ wheel set into your frame if you felt the need to do so. And todays higher end fat bikes are light and very nimble. Hope you find one that suits you. Enjoy your ride. 👍

    Seemed more challenging than most with steep climbs and big rocks.
    I must say though, that I miss the excellent music you always select.

      Lots of great climbing. This was a rare time when the wind noise wasn’t completely overwhelming on the natural audio (which is usually the situation) So we left this one natural for a change.

    The downside to Fat Tire bike 🚲 is that the tubes and tires are way more expensive than regular bicycles

    • @NewMexicoOutside
      @NewMexicoOutside  4 місяці тому +1

      Not really. Tires are comparable to skinny tires if you shop around. And I don’t know anyone who uses tubes in our group. Tubeless is the way to go.
