Thank you. Finally a sane comment. I'm quite annoyed by that kind of movie. They spend tons of money on uniforms and weaponry (and in that case they actually do a decent job) but then they spoil it all by making their protagonists perform totally silly and illogical actions like the one you just pointed to. But hey, there's a lot of flashbang and yelling and dying - so I guess this is a "very realistic movie that shows, how brutal war really is".... :-/
Yeah, I understand the whole hollywood action scene and drama thing, but from a tactical point of view this scene is a complete disaster...
@Tim Tom They didn't have to charge down the hill to do that. Their weapons have an effective range of considerably more than 3 meters...
@Tim Tom Nah there were plenty of good tactics and good officers in WW1, like the German General von Mudra for one example. During one action in December 1914, he attacked across no-man's-land with five companies of men and captured three lines of French trenches at the cost of only 6 dead and 13 wounded. Small successes like that were common. The problem was that it was really really hard to achieve big operational breakthroughs at the division or corps level. At the tactical level, like what is shown in movies, it was not just a bunch of men mindlessly charging at each other and getting mowed down like robots.
The movie is Captain Conan by Bertrand Tavernier, a movie about the «corp franc» of the french army during WWI, and their inability to readapt to civil life at the end of the conflict. This is a real killer movie. My favorite WWI movie, it neither lie nor cry over war.

Bienvenue dans le monde magnifique des films de guerres. Rares sont ceux à peu prêt réaliste.
Les uniformes des soldats sont couleurs moutarde car il s'agit de l'armée d'orient. Celle qui a combattu pendant plus d'un après l'armistice. Elle combattit les bolchéviks notamment. Les troupes coloniales françaises et l'armée d'orient portaient un uniforme moutarde ou kaki à contrario de ceux de la métropole, qui eux porté l'uniforme bleu horizon. Voilà ce n'est pas une erreur du producteur du film ;)

C'est aussi que "l'Armée d'Orient" qui se battait donc sur le front de l'Est (front et armée dont les victoires sont trop peu racontés de nos jours alors que c'est elle et c'est là que s'explique aussi et surtout même on peut le dire la capitulation allemande de 1918 après que cette armée ai vaincu ses alliés à l'Est, autrichiens et bulgare entre autres) avait adopté très tôt ce camouflage plus adapté au lieu que le Bleu du front de l'Ouest
Damnit, I wish I understood French. This looks like a killer film. The French have made all the best First World War movies. Which is understood, since they literally lost an entire generation of young men in only a few key battles; Like Verdun in 1916. Just mass slaughter on a scale only seen one other time in history, Stalingrad.. I couldn't imagine what it would be like under the constant shelling in the trenches of Verdun. Day and night, had to drive most men mad.

I got a VHS copy with subtitles around 2000. It winds up being a pretty intense military trial drama, kind of like Paths of Glory or Breaker Morant.

The first segment shows a battle between a unit of the French expeditionary force maybe in the Ucraine circa 1919 or late 1918.
The last part shows the fight of the same unit during the break through offensive (October 1918) in the Macedonian front in northern Greece. French, British, Imperial, Serbian and Greek divisions made an all out assault against Bulgarians and their German allies.
Not sure of the era for such french colors gear.

If remember correctly, they are French from the Armée d'Orient, which broke the Bulgarian and Austrian armies in the Balkans.
But this fight happened AFTER the ceasefire. French troops staid in the Balkans to oppose communists. Hence the red flag and slavic language of the foes.
The movie is about captain Conan's unit, who keep on fighting after the war is over because they are good at it and don't know what to do else.

Yes, this battle scene is pretty unrealistic.
First, this scene is supposed to depict the fight of the French along the Dniestr river on the Bessarabian front, in 1919. But the only battle of significant scale on this front taked place in the city of Bender, not in open ground, and it mostly involved colonial troops, not metropolitan ones.
On May 27th, the Bolsheviks crossed the river at dawn, taking foot in Bender while a communist uprising was started from the inside. They captured the most part of an enginneer company, before a counter-attack lead by two batallions of Algerian tirailleurs, with the support of a "régiment d'infanterie coloniale", repulsed the assaliants. Hundreds of the Bolshevisks drowned or were mown down by French machine guns when they recrossed the Dniestr.
Second, in 1919, French troops would never have fought like shown here. After four years of war, they were experienced troops, making good use of the ground to pin down the enemy at long range thanks to their superior fire power and tactical skills. For the French infantry was well armed, its squads being structured around interdependent teams of Chauchat light machine guns and Viven-Bessières grenade launchers.

En fait les uniformes Français sur le front de l'Ouest ont été bleu du début à la fin de la guerre. De 1914 à mai 1915 les uniformes sont bleu avec un képi et un pantalon rouge vif (le fameux "garance"), il seront remplacé par des uniformes exclusivement bleu horizon.
Les uniformes sont différents içi car il s'agit de l'armée dite "d'Orient" qui combat sur le front des balkans aux coté des Serbes et des grecs contre les Bulgares, les Turcs et les Austro-Hongrois.

the old uniform was from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. The red trousers was too light and the soldiers were easy targets. In addition, the helmet did not exist in the equipment (only the riders had). The French were long kept the old uniform as a symbol of revenge on the Germans.
But they have opted for a discrete uniform and more functional in 1916.

Au début, lls étaient en rouge "pétant"( garance) et bleu marine. c'est au cours de des années 1915-1916 que l'Armée française a adopté l’uniforme dit "bleu horizon", plus discret.
et à la fin de la guerre, la France avait la meilleur armée et la plus moderne car presque entièrement dotées de camions..et que les américains furent entièrement équipés et entraînés par la France

@mlosmlos Not all units in the French Army wore Horizon blue in WW1. Units recruited in North Africa (like tirailleurs, zouaves and the Foreign Legion) and the Colonial Troops (marines and Senegalese) wore a yellowish brown colour called Mustard Khaki.

Les anglophones qui commentent "WTFFFFFFFFFFFFF THEIR TACTICAL IS SO DUMB" montrent juste qu'ils n'ont rien compris au film et ne l'ont même certainement pas vu.
Tout le cœur de la scène précédente, c'est Conan qui dit à De Scève que leur position est dangereuse et qu'ils ne sont pas équipés pour faire face si l'attaque arrive par l'eau.
L'entièreté du film montre les troupes du corps expéditionnaire d'Orient livrées à elles-mêmes, avec une hiérarchie qui soit leur donne des ordres contradictoires ou dangereux, soit les abandonne carrément une fois que les offensives sont lancées. Pour se plaindre de la stupidité de leur "tactique", faut vraiment ne pas comprendre ce qui est dit. Toute l'écriture de la scène va dans le sens d'un mouvement de panique face à une menace contre laquelle les soldats, déjà à bout, n'arrivent pas à agir de façon coordonnée, au point où Conan se retrouve à devoir gérer la situation alors que ça n'a rien à voir avec ses victoires en tant que nettoyeur de tranchée.
Mais bon, pour comprendre ça, faudrait déjà voir le film et savoir lire des sous-titres. Peut-être que j'en demande trop.

i dont know really. its a movie about the french army during the WW1 on the greek front. I know they had some success. The best final was something like 10.000 spahis ( arab cavalry units from north africa ) + french regular cavalry units charging til a bulgarian city where were stationned more than 80.000 german & bulgarian soldiers. The 80.000 soldiers surrendered ( the officers believed they were front of a very large allied army, ) and Bulgaria capitulated just after.

Bulgaria surrendered because of the breakthrough at Dobro Pole, the war taking its toll on the population and army and Bulgaria punching above its weight for far too long - however the advance of the Allied forces was also checked at Doiran 1918, meaning Bulgaria proper itself was NOT occupied by any allied troops.

Not exactly, those troops fought in the Gallipoli campaign vs the Ottomans, then In the Salonika campaign (in the Balkans / Greece) vs the bulgars mostly from the end of 1915 to 1918.

Au début de la guerre, les uniformes français étaient bleus et rouges vestiges du 19ème siècle, les uniformes ont ensuite changé pour mieux s'adapter à la guerre des tranchés.

Capitaine Conan is the name of the movie... Should be findable with english sub... it's about french 1st commandos style in WWI... They continued the fight after WWI in Romania and in Bulgaria to prevent those countries to fall under Bolchevik influence after the Great war. Many have forgotten that France maintained a strong presence in those countries after 1918... There were also french troops in Poland, many french officers (in Which the Capitaine then Commandant (Major) De Gaulle) helped Poland to resist against Bolcheviks attacks.

@mlosmlos blue horizon uniform is the base model. It is used all over the Western Front.
But the uniforms of North Africa and the Front of Eastern Europe are different.
In Africa the uniform is white or bisque (with pith helmet). In Eastern Europe the uniform is brown with the helmet of Adrian. they are Legionnaires and that's why they are not blue.

Torreton porte un uniforme d'Officier des Chasseurs et pas de la Légion... Les Allemands surnommaient les Chasseurs : les diables bleus.
@@billroyal942 Oui c'est Capitaine Conan... et cela n'a rien à voir avec la Légion, puisqu'il était Officier des Bataillons de Chasseurs... pendant la grande guerre, les français ont en gros formé un embryon de "commandos", ou de l'infanterie d'élite avec une bande de frappadingues... dans le film, Torreton résume bien l'affaire, il dit au LTN appelé qu'il est un soldat, que l'autre LTN est un professionnel (LTN engagé avec un caractère d'enflure lol) mais que lui Torreton et ses gars, c'est des Guerriers et que si les soldats ont fait la guerre, c'est les guerriers qui ont gagné la guerre...
@@jpc7118 Je parlais de la légion car mon grand-père a fait la première guerre mondiale dans la Légion étrangère et j'ai toujours son casque, percé d'une balle, qui est kaki et non bleu horizon.
Je dois reconnaître aussi que je suis plus branché sur l'uniformologie de la seconde guerre mondiale et de la guerre civile américaine et de la guerre du Vietnam.

I was referring to the color of uniform. It was blue, not brown. About trousers and helmet i already knew - i have made several 3d models of french soldiers for WW1 mod for one computer game.
WRONG. The uniforms are absolutely correct for French on the Salonika front. After the war many Polish troops fighting the Bolsheviks (1919-21) wore the same kit, as army surplus sent via Odessa. Horizon Bleu was worn on the Western Front, and some of that kit was also worn (by Haller's Blue Army) in the Polish war.
