Theres something so cool about the DH2, maybe its because its a pusher, maybe because its a bathtub with a machinegun. It feels so primal, so raw, you are truly riding the wind.

I’m always impressed by the courage of those pioneers like my Hero Maj Lanoe Hawker to get up in these flimsy little things and fight! The German pilots were armed with far better machines also could engage and disengage at will, as most engagement happened over their own lines!! Rest in peace Ancient Warriors!!

Oh my God this is SO FANTASTIC! It worth the while waiting a year or more to see this, I've had my jaw dropped all these 4 minutes, it's simply astounding and beautiful, I just get the goosebumps thinking that nearly 100 years ago, this beautiful piece or early aerial machinery would engage into mortal dogfights, THANK YOU for posting this!

Such a beautiful piece of aviation history. Amazing that people actually went to war in these aircraft..

Just went for a drive and turned up at Wickenby at random for a break. While we were there this incredible, impressive machine did a lovely low run and break past the control tower. I didn't know it even existed so thank you Mr Cooper for the first time in a long time that I genuinely haven't believed my eyes :)

Visibility is king in Air Combat. Love to fly it with Rise of Flight game.

Superb achievement getting this skeletal aircraft up, up and away from Wickenby airfield. Highly enjoyable video. How I'd loved to have been at this lovely ex-RAF airfield to watch it taking off and touching down. Thanks again.

@lacone3615 The fuel tank is situated right behind the pilots seat, inside the Nacelle. Just producing a DVD about the DH2 at the moment - and we have some wonderful stripped down DH2 photographs in it. Watch out for more details!

A pleasure to watch that. Last time I flew with Gerry, it was in an Aztec, don't think the DH2 would lift both him & me (I'm not known for my pie avoidance! :) )

@lacone3615 The fuel tank is in the fuselage, between the cockpit and the engine, and apparently holds enough for about 2 1/2 hours of flying/

Very interesting structurally but apparently not aerodynamically. Also, in a crash, you’d have to worry about the engine and fuel behind you.

@hangarrat101 It's actually more like 1hr 45mins comfortable flying with the kinner engine :)

Thanks for the video. Just one question. Where is the fuel tank located? In old photos that I have seen, the fuel tank was located on the top wing.

Would a rotary engine be more powerful? Would a rotary engine make it harder to fly?

    • @kedrednael
      @kedrednael Рік тому +1

The rotary engine they used in WW1 had 100HP, the kinner engine from 1940 they installed in this plane is around 110-150HP?
A rotary engine would make it harder to fly, since the entire engine is spinning as fast as the propeller. Most of the plane is made from wood and canvas, while the engine is a heavy metal block. So a large portion of the plane's mass is spinning at a thousand RPM. This causes turning to the left to be quite different than turning to the right. (like trying to rotate a spinning gyroscope). And changing the engine power makes the plane roll a bit.
You could try it out for yourself in the simulator Rise Of Flight!

People flew these in combat after 12 hours flight time?

"It originally had a 90hp engine in it & nobody could fly it".........what about the teenage pilots over the western front dogfighting in it with bare minimum training time ??
