the issue with the cav box is that you dont realize it on the minimap as it looks like maximum 5 units together. you only realize its a cav box when you see its speed on the map lol. If you do this you literally don't know the definition of fun

ngl i've been 8, keep in mind im a noob, i joined a game had no clue what was going in, got bullied hard and decided to just spread all my vilys across the map, the guy spent over an hour to find them and gave up before he got them all, i went afk and came back to a victory screen with 2 villys left. i also play with friends ( we are all noobs and lose alot) but we enjoy playing as a team
I usually played online treaty matches as Russia in team games, and tried to play more as the support and situational use player for the team. Team would break open a section of wall and flood in the cheap cav and oprichniks, enemy would spam muskets and I'd counter with cheap, instant strelets. Was always a use there, and giving my whole team instant infantry was awesome too! One game, however, there was a player that was talking a whole lot of smack, for no reason. Maybe he thought I was someone else, or maybe he was just a jerk. Anyway, I decided that I was going to be cheap, and end his fun for the day. That day, the oprichnik box secured a victory in 5 minutes after the end of the treaty. Was this fair? Probably not, but that day it made that player leave very upset. And that was enough for me :)
@@boo_tao5375 hahaha i like to play with my Friends but they are kinda noobs so when we play, i end up doing almost everything: sending up to 40k gold to a teammate and 20k Wood to another, building all the front wall and 80% of the front base, and taking on almost all enemy's armies by myself because my Friends just sent soldiers not very strategicly nor microed so they die almost instantly hahaha
Ideas to nerf cav box: 1: tech that reduces enemy unit speed, when in radius of non-wall buildings 2: damage overlap--when a unit takes a ranged hit, and their model is touching that of another unit, the adjacent unit will take some damage, too. 3: tech that works as sort of anti-pillage, wheir your buildings take less damage from cavalry. 4: anti-cav bonus for outposts, forts, and TCs.
I saw a cav box recently and couldn't for the life of me figure out what the point was. Could only counter it with a gendarme spam. Thanks for the video
It's alright to present an opinion, but maybe these shouldn't be considered bad sportmanship necessarily. Dragoons can intercept cav boxes, Daimyos aren't going to be producing too many units if you're harassing their eco, etc. I don't think we want to give players even more reasons for calling each other toxic. Haven't faced a lot of these personally but I'd like to think every tactic has its place, or it'd be removed in a patch.
It's salty behavior, to call a mechanic or a strategy 'bm' instead of working to find a viable counter, and it saddens me to see aoe3 players use these excuses. Haven't seen anyone bitch about specific units or tactics in Age 2, because people put in the work to find counters.
So it's because of that, you haven't face them really. Dragoons can't intercept oprichniks, they can kill a few of them but light cav don't suppose to kill cav quickly, si you pick of like 5 of them, and by the time you shoot again they've already destroy your factories, and 5s later they're killing all your vills for the oprichnik hace multiplier against them, and that's even if you now it's coming, often by the time you realize they make them they're already at the door of your city and you dont have enough time to make the goons
What i love of treaty for example is the Big battles, and Big confrontations, i mean, being in a war where you are in constant battle, and the flanks, and the strategy, and the positioning... But to ignore completely the enemy's army and go only for the eco with a fast unit, it just seems like no fun at all, where is the fun there? That's not a challange, that's for cowards that can't win in strategy and can't beat your army
@@pabloduarte1722 well strats are that, doing what your opponent never expect or better what they hate. Though i must admit that cav box is a bit OP. Maybe if they got speed penalty or impaired movement on narrow passes like forest or buildings then its not gonna be that bad.
I've always been a no holds barred player. That said, vindicive actions such as hiding your last settler, and non-designed exploits like keystroke activated bugs should definitely be despised. Still, I love using the advantages built into each civ, and expect to be on the recieving end of them as well.
By all means use the civ bonuses and their strengths! It's just that some mentioned have no counter play at all, and make you feel hopeless. Which then again isn't really the player's fault.
The specific players I am watching do these tactics in this video I've played against personally and it's sad but true that their play style matches their attitudes, read between the lines, I'll leave it at that. 😉
I admit... when I first learned France can instaspawn the heavy cav, I used it to beat some insane bots. I seen its destruction..... the chaos.... I refrain from using that power now and I only train 25 or so and have a unit of skirmishers, musketeers, and 5 falconer. There's always that Palpatine voice in my head saying "Do it...." when I think of spawning cavalry Edit: if you do the cav spam, at least shout "Viva La France!"
I had this one game where one of our guys dropped, and one of the guys on the other team said would just go afk and not play so it's fair. We played on, and he never directly attacked us. But as soon as we legitimately beat the other two guys he had an army of Cav and went straight towards our towns and wiped us out and won
Same thing happened with me 4-5 times. It's annoying and I've learnt my lesson. When one of your teammates drops...then just QUIT IF ONE OF THE OTHER TEAM PLAYERS DOESN'T RESIGN AS WELL.
The first one is completely fine though. It's an intended mechanic. Otherwise getting a single military unit as a treasure early on would be almost worthless.

Once I played as Russia on a 3v3. In age 2, I sent 5 muskets randomly to the enemies' side of the map. In age 4/5 (I don't remember which), they had walled everything off and I only had 2 muskets left. I used them to build a fort, and instantly spammed 100 muskets out and drove one of the opponent's villagers off his base. They kept fighting after that, but it was pretty much the end of the game. It has been a close fight up to that point. Oh, and I was also the guy who hid his villie that you had to kill on almost every game I used to play.
I feel like some of these things are features designed to end games. You dont really see alot of opri boxes early because they cost a lot of resources for units that will be practically stomped on by most others. At the same time if your commiting to an opri box then your military suffers allowing your opponent to push you back. Anyway some of this cheese are features designed to end games because the game has to end eventually. Hell i played you in a 3v3 once and you had over 12 Great Bombards behind a wall in the center of deccan. It sucks being on the recieving end but at the same time i understood because i gave you enough time to allow you to cheese. Its just part of the game.
Some of these mechanics have a legit purpuse but in my opinion the daymo is the most ridiculous. They just have to hide one unit somewhere close to your walls spam 50 Samurais and destroy half your base
@@goldminer754 In all honesty you should have established map control all game. Japan has little reason to leave its base it is a very defensive civilisation. It does not need to hunt, its rice patties can generate gold for just 400 wood. The daimyo is a feature designed to overcome this. If the game takes long enough for daimyos to be effective its just a way for the game to end.
When I was 14 I was this second place France player. The more I really learned the game (reacting to the enemy, really fighting, getting better), the more fun I had. French cav is fun. But its a lot more fun to really learn the game and have a nice fight
For the cav boxes, all you have to do to break the formation is to focus and kill the middle ranged cavalry unit. Once that's dead, the formation breaks and the hand cav spread out. It's pretty easy to defend against once you know about it.
In a french mirror I was forced to spam gendarmes because the enemy spammed nothing but gendarmes, he then called me a lamer for spamming gendarmes. Can't we figure out something evil to do to these people?
I used to cav box Japan's wonders and french eco in treaty games. After the wonders were done there was no more cav boxes. Used to hate the diamyo campers in treaty with their mortars within the base. I liked to think of it as balancing the game. That said there were a number of treaty games that I played where the box was broken apart very quickly by goons. If you know what youre doing and you've walled properly you can counter it well. (6 layers of walls and stables for goons everywhere)
Cannon spammer is also toxic. With Dutch, they do 150 pop falconet and he make his teammate defend their cannons so you can't kill them even with culverin. You can't manage to kill it with 100 pop cav because they die before they manage to attack
I always wondered why the developers never patched these problems. Maybe they simply couldn't, but they should be able to add a 1 second delay to French cav or spread the cav box formation. Hopefully they take this into account when developing AOE IV.
So glad you included #6 - always seems to be Turkish people playing as Ottos lol. They got like 3 LTs all team 1, ready to decimate a group of strangers - how is that even fun ?! Edit: I think you should have mentioned that they also usually have a discord chat and a WELL-PRACTICED strategy so they play more like 10 lvls above their actualy level
Typing "gg" at the end is a form of manners. Even if my opponent is the biggest lamer/cheater/bully. It doesn't matter. Losing to such a player is less of a defeat, than losing your manners over any lost game.
the only thing i can agree with is the villager thingy ( hide last unit) and the gg when the game obviously was NOT a good game. but other than that those were legit strategies: what makes this game so great is the fact that it was pretty balanced. every civ has weaknesses and strength. so i really dont understand how complaining about unique strategies is necessary. i know its not meant seriously but still :) and back when i played it i barely met toxic players. and one hint regarding the Dekkan Ottoman Age4 feed strategy: scouting helps. if one learns how to scout properly and what to scout for and read signals it can single-handedly win a game. this strategy is pretty cool but easily counterable with a fast rush. well anyways: was cool to watch an age3 video again after so many year: i am sooo hyped for the remake and for the new online servers :) excited to see if i can reach my old elo again. probably not :P
I think u missed Arrow Knights. Yeah players will use them from long and siege our base using scorched earth card And will run away after shooting one or 2 volley to their op aztec army. It's so annoying especially when they kill our seige. Same for Indian seige elephant.
My first ever online game I played someone did the Cav box(#1)to me and destroyed me and then said this is what death is like in this game, and said sorry. I was so confused on what happened. It looks so unorthodox that it looks like a straight up hack! I hate it.
pretty much all happened to me, and i've been an offender of at least half the tactics on this list. But honestly most of these are counterable if you know how. Oppernick have really high siege and are good at killing vills, but at anything else they SCK. get a good LOS around your base and intercept them before they can get even close to your base.
I remember my first match on ffa playing with Aztecs and suddenly a French player do the cav box and my jaguar warriors cant handle that. It was annoying.

In doing so I downloaded the expansion but it no longer makes me play the Asian dynasty expansion and the previous ones. I think when you install wars of liberty you have to install it in a completely different folder than your regular Age of Empires 3 folder, it think it gives you a warning during install.
ive had two guys camp out on an island after me and a teamate crushed them. they hid for an hour before i just gave up but they had to be the sorest losers i played against
I guess we will have all of these fixed (aside from maybe afkers) in Definitive Edition as most of these "bugs" are fixable by patches. On the other hand, can we really blame a player who goes for the most powerful strategy like French cavalry or Japanese Daimyos? I get it, it's OP, but I would put a blame on devs here for abandoning the game up until now.
Interesting how a few of these no-nos are actual accepted strategies in aoe2 (scout raiding enemy villagers, one player feeding others their resources, known as slinging, for example). I’m wondering what’s different. Maybe it’s just a balance issue.
The problem with slinging in aoe 3 is that the Home City system allows huge power spikes. If you sling an ally in aoe 2, he still has to take the time to produce soldiers, research upgrades, etc. With aoe 3, one team can have the equivalent of 16 paladins instantly while the opponents still collect berries
I only very recently tried the infamous Oprichnik cav ball (vs AI...I have a soul), and I didn't even like using it all that much lol, much prefer a Cossack spam.
I agree with most, especially the "im hiding one settler somewhere in nowhere even though ive completely lost the game already" type. the laming thing is kinda okay if it actually has an effect and is not just annoying. Cause its basically the same thing as rushing is, just earlier. Cav boxes are insanely toxic indeed, but i gotta say for russia its kind of the only op thing they have. if the game goes into late game and everyone is massing armies, what else could russia do than opris ^^

I totally cav box my axe riders straight for your first town center then build corrals and teepees in your base in FFA I also make walls out of corrals, usually 2 layers
People say GG when an opponent drops because for them the game is over and there's no reason to continue playing. By doing this we infer that it is already over before it has already begun, thus there's no shame in leaving or not finishing because its already over or GG.
Marc Dick the point he was making is that GG isn’t slang for “the game is over” but is actually supposed to mean something and a game ending when players have dropped doesn’t merit it.
I hate when people go “rank 8 or less” and they have a clan of a rank 10,4,4. When you call them out they say something like “im a noob” then proceed to smurf out the game. Honestly never join where a clan of 3-4 is already teamed. Ever. I also hate when everyone locks in then half the people change from fun civs to competitive civs, team, and try to rush the start. Like all the sargents suddenly go team2 and pick france or something. Then you’re left with 3 noobs just looking for a good game

I often see players defend cav-boxes by saying that it's a mechanic of the game and if it were toxic or an exploit, devs would remove it. I can live with that argument, however, to me it's a super classic example of "just because you *can* do it, doesn't mean you *should* do it. You can call it an unspoken rule or gentlemen's code that's been made for the sake of preserving fun and balance. Unfortunately some people get enjoyment out of ruining other people's fun and balance, so unspoken rules will always find somebody that's going to break them and that's a shame.
A lot of these just seem realy viable strats and not even that lame Why do people have problem with slinging teamates ressources, early agression and laming resources(althought i dont like this one as well)? In Age 2 people consider it perfectly ok, is the Age 3 scene just more casual?
3 is a much more restrictive game by design, limiting the ratio of units, building distance from enemy tc and a bunch of other things that were thought of as exploits by parts of the playerbase and developers of the series, as a result it is more geared towards a few standard strategies following deliberately planned mechanics, making unusual tactics stand out more as "exploits". along with the fictional campaign that explains why it has less dedicated fanbase than 1 and especially 2.
My strategy for the Cav Box/Cube strat was always samurai, base layout, terrain, scouting, being proactive, and anticipating/preempting such a thing right from the start. So, realistically, being the better player. Which isn't really a fair, or occasionally practical, expectation but it's the best I got. P.S.: Is anyone aware on how to install AoE3 on a laptop with no disc slot? Yes, I could buy it digitally, but my old dinosaur of a PC gave up the ghost and now I got a decorative Collector's Edition mocking me. P.P.S.: AoE 3 is getting a Definitive Edition and that really surprised me when I first heard about it. Logically it _does_ make perfect sense but hey, hindsight.

Once I played as Russia on a 3v3. In age 2, I sent 5 muskets randomly to the enemies' side of the map. In age 4/5 (I don't remember which), they had walled everything off and I only had 2 muskets left. I used them to build a fort, and instantly spammed 100 muskets out and drove one of the opponent's villagers off his base. They kept fighting after that, but it was pretty much the end of the game. It has been a close fight up to that point.
Oh, and I was also the guy who hid his villie that you had to kill on almost every game I used to play.
I feel like some of these things are features designed to end games. You dont really see alot of opri boxes early because they cost a lot of resources for units that will be practically stomped on by most others. At the same time if your commiting to an opri box then your military suffers allowing your opponent to push you back. Anyway some of this cheese are features designed to end games because the game has to end eventually. Hell i played you in a 3v3 once and you had over 12 Great Bombards behind a wall in the center of deccan. It sucks being on the recieving end but at the same time i understood because i gave you enough time to allow you to cheese. Its just part of the game.

Some of these mechanics have a legit purpuse but in my opinion the daymo is the most ridiculous. They just have to hide one unit somewhere close to your walls spam 50 Samurais and destroy half your base
@@goldminer754 In all honesty you should have established map control all game. Japan has little reason to leave its base it is a very defensive civilisation. It does not need to hunt, its rice patties can generate gold for just 400 wood. The daimyo is a feature designed to overcome this. If the game takes long enough for daimyos to be effective its just a way for the game to end.

When I was 14 I was this second place France player. The more I really learned the game (reacting to the enemy, really fighting, getting better), the more fun I had. French cav is fun. But its a lot more fun to really learn the game and have a nice fight

For the cav boxes, all you have to do to break the formation is to focus and kill the middle ranged cavalry unit. Once that's dead, the formation breaks and the hand cav spread out. It's pretty easy to defend against once you know about it.
In a french mirror I was forced to spam gendarmes because the enemy spammed nothing but gendarmes, he then called me a lamer for spamming gendarmes. Can't we figure out something evil to do to these people?

I used to cav box Japan's wonders and french eco in treaty games. After the wonders were done there was no more cav boxes. Used to hate the diamyo campers in treaty with their mortars within the base. I liked to think of it as balancing the game. That said there were a number of treaty games that I played where the box was broken apart very quickly by goons. If you know what youre doing and you've walled properly you can counter it well. (6 layers of walls and stables for goons everywhere)
Cannon spammer is also toxic. With Dutch, they do 150 pop falconet and he make his teammate defend their cannons so you can't kill them even with culverin. You can't manage to kill it with 100 pop cav because they die before they manage to attack

How can you respawn your explorer without a Single unit ?
I always wondered why the developers never patched these problems. Maybe they simply couldn't, but they should be able to add a 1 second delay to French cav or spread the cav box formation. Hopefully they take this into account when developing AOE IV.

Edit: I think you should have mentioned that they also usually have a discord chat and a WELL-PRACTICED strategy so they play more like 10 lvls above their actualy level
Typing "gg" at the end is a form of manners. Even if my opponent is the biggest lamer/cheater/bully. It doesn't matter. Losing to such a player is less of a defeat, than losing your manners over any lost game.
I mean I could be wrong, but to me and despite the video title, the video was more about annoying tactics people use.
What upgrade do you get to make the French Heavy Cav. train instantly?

the only thing i can agree with is the villager thingy ( hide last unit) and the gg when the game obviously was NOT a good game. but other than that those were legit strategies: what makes this game so great is the fact that it was pretty balanced. every civ has weaknesses and strength. so i really dont understand how complaining about unique strategies is necessary. i know its not meant seriously but still :) and back when i played it i barely met toxic players.
and one hint regarding the Dekkan Ottoman Age4 feed strategy: scouting helps. if one learns how to scout properly and what to scout for and read signals it can single-handedly win a game. this strategy is pretty cool but easily counterable with a fast rush.
well anyways: was cool to watch an age3 video again after so many year: i am sooo hyped for the remake and for the new online servers :) excited to see if i can reach my old elo again. probably not :P
Sometimes people use GG as a taunt and some has no idea what GG is

And will run away after shooting one or 2 volley to their op aztec army.
It's so annoying especially when they kill our seige.

My first ever online game I played someone did the Cav box(#1)to me and destroyed me and then said this is what death is like in this game, and said sorry. I was so confused on what happened. It looks so unorthodox that it looks like a straight up hack! I hate it.
pretty much all happened to me, and i've been an offender of at least half the tactics on this list. But honestly most of these are counterable if you know how. Oppernick have really high siege and are good at killing vills, but at anything else they SCK. get a good LOS around your base and intercept them before they can get even close to your base.

I remember my first match on ffa playing with Aztecs and suddenly a French player do the cav box and my jaguar warriors cant handle that. It was annoying.

Alt + D to wake up your explorer is not an exploit, its an acctually game mechanic that not all the players know

In doing so I downloaded the expansion but it no longer makes me play the Asian dynasty expansion and the previous ones. When did you download War of Liberty for the first time, did you have the same problem as me?

I think when you install wars of liberty you have to install it in a completely different folder than your regular Age of Empires 3 folder, it think it gives you a warning during install.

ive had two guys camp out on an island after me and a teamate crushed them. they hid for an hour before i just gave up but they had to be the sorest losers i played against

I guess we will have all of these fixed (aside from maybe afkers) in Definitive Edition as most of these "bugs" are fixable by patches. On the other hand, can we really blame a player who goes for the most powerful strategy like French cavalry or Japanese Daimyos? I get it, it's OP, but I would put a blame on devs here for abandoning the game up until now.

Interesting how a few of these no-nos are actual accepted strategies in aoe2 (scout raiding enemy villagers, one player feeding others their resources, known as slinging, for example). I’m wondering what’s different. Maybe it’s just a balance issue.
The problem with slinging in aoe 3 is that the Home City system allows huge power spikes. If you sling an ally in aoe 2, he still has to take the time to produce soldiers, research upgrades, etc. With aoe 3, one team can have the equivalent of 16 paladins instantly while the opponents still collect berries

I agree with most, especially the "im hiding one settler somewhere in nowhere even though ive completely lost the game already" type. the laming thing is kinda okay if it actually has an effect and is not just annoying. Cause its basically the same thing as rushing is, just earlier.
Cav boxes are insanely toxic indeed, but i gotta say for russia its kind of the only op thing they have. if the game goes into late game and everyone is massing armies, what else could russia do than opris ^^

I totally cav box my axe riders straight for your first town center then build corrals and teepees in your base in FFA
I also make walls out of corrals, usually 2 layers
With Russia, they attack with doin fort near your base, attack advance and doing fort again 3 times with musketeers.
My friends used to hate me for doing a hatamoto rush. I would spam yumis as distraction, and then 10 hatamotos would wreck their town.
Those are some strong units!
People say GG when an opponent drops because for them the game is over and there's no reason to continue playing. By doing this we infer that it is already over before it has already begun, thus there's no shame in leaving or not finishing because its already over or GG.
Marc Dick the point he was making is that GG isn’t slang for “the game is over” but is actually supposed to mean something and a game ending when players have dropped doesn’t merit it.
I hate when people go “rank 8 or less” and they have a clan of a rank 10,4,4. When you call them out they say something like “im a noob” then proceed to smurf out the game. Honestly never join where a clan of 3-4 is already teamed. Ever. I also hate when everyone locks in then half the people change from fun civs to competitive civs, team, and try to rush the start. Like all the sargents suddenly go team2 and pick france or something. Then you’re left with 3 noobs just looking for a good game

I often see players defend cav-boxes by saying that it's a mechanic of the game and if it were toxic or an exploit, devs would remove it. I can live with that argument, however, to me it's a super classic example of "just because you *can* do it, doesn't mean you *should* do it.
You can call it an unspoken rule or gentlemen's code that's been made for the sake of preserving fun and balance.
Unfortunately some people get enjoyment out of ruining other people's fun and balance, so unspoken rules will always find somebody that's going to break them and that's a shame.
I had to beat French cav spam with opri destruction in 3v3 yesterday. Didnt box though. But it was a toxic game lol but funny

In Age 2 people consider it perfectly ok, is the Age 3 scene just more casual?
3 is a much more restrictive game by design, limiting the ratio of units, building distance from enemy tc and a bunch of other things that were thought of as exploits by parts of the playerbase and developers of the series, as a result it is more geared towards a few standard strategies following deliberately planned mechanics, making unusual tactics stand out more as "exploits". along with the fictional campaign that explains why it has less dedicated fanbase than 1 and especially 2.
I need to kick the AI's ass with a cavbox now. Never seen it before lol.

My strategy for the Cav Box/Cube strat was always samurai, base layout, terrain, scouting, being proactive, and anticipating/preempting such a thing right from the start. So, realistically, being the better player. Which isn't really a fair, or occasionally practical, expectation but it's the best I got.
P.S.: Is anyone aware on how to install AoE3 on a laptop with no disc slot? Yes, I could buy it digitally, but my old dinosaur of a PC gave up the ghost and now I got a decorative Collector's Edition mocking me.
P.P.S.: AoE 3 is getting a Definitive Edition and that really surprised me when I first heard about it. Logically it _does_ make perfect sense but hey, hindsight.
