    raslarr is looking a bit bigger than when they did my gq rear bar 15 odd years ago in the little factory in clegg rd.rob was a legend. i went back a year later for swingaways and he noticed my rear bar powdercoat was a bit scuffed so he took the bar off without telling me and repowder coated without charging me.great bloke even better customer service.

    The thing I hated the most about my Y62 was the rattling in the back; it drove me crazy. If
    money allows canopy 100%

    I've only had wagons, and while I love them, the rear quarters are kinda vulnerable till you put a good rear bar on them, access inside, even with openable side windows is never quite as good as a canopy. The win with the ute conversion to me is you get the best of both worlds. Have a 1/2 size canopy for the stuff you need sealed from the weather and have the rear open for firewood, chainsaw and whatever else you want to put in the back.
    Just the small matter of buying the wagon..... then spending another $30-$40k to turn it into a ute......

    If you can afford it, chop it. Nothing like being able to build your canopy into the ultimate camp mate. I’ve got a GU wagon and I’d definitely prefer the option of a canopy instead of the wagon. Do it!

    So you want to chop your wagon into a ute then prob put a canopy on it to turn it back into a wagon...waste of money dont you think?

    • @Australian4x4Adventures

      A canopy is removable so you are getting a wagon ( canopy ) and a Ute in one really. 😁😁

      Just buy a cheap ute if you need one, it'd be a pain in the arse removing a canopy all the time

    Forgive my ignorance, but whats the advantage to chopping a wagon, rather than just buying a ute in the first place?

      My theory is.. if you have enough dollars of course.. the only LARGE 4wd utes were your LandCruiser 79 and GU patrol...
      The patrol was only 2 door and they stopped making them, so that's out
      The 79 dual cab your getting an uncomfortable, basic as ute for the dollars so that's gone
      So all that leaves out of your large 4wds are wagons such as 300,200 LandCruiser and y62 patrol.. which both have big engines, tow well and lots of comfort. But no ute version.. so hence the chop
      Yes.. you can go out and buy an American ute, ram, chev, f250.. but you also have to consider if your in the middle of nowhere, what are your chances of getting spare parts..
      The price, especially if you get the 2500 model your at 150k before any modifications
      There is many pros and cons
      I can't afford any of these anyway so 🤷😂

    Always had wagons and never thought I’d want a Ute, now I have a Silverado 2500 with tray and canopy and will honestly never go back. The usability of a well setup canopy is far superior to a wagon in every way.

    Robs new shop looks great. We have a ute for work and a wagon which is setup for touring. I think if l set the ute up for touring the tray high would make it very hard for the wife. I know a lot of gear can go under the tray but she doesn't want to use any of that stuff.

    Keep the wagon for family stuff. They’re engineered, tested and designed to work well that way. Sure you’ll get versatility but it comes at a cost. And the big question is…. Do you NEED it?
    Buy an old Ute for funsies.

      Yeah that’s kinda the plan.

    I have big dogs that like to get dirty and smelly, and i live in a hot climate, so a wagon is a good idea but you cant use the back with dogs. My nav has a 5910 gcm so have to be really careful with weights. I like the 7 tonne gcm of the patrol but need a ute for my dogs. And fukc buying a 79.

    you said you have 300-400 kgs that you can throw in the wagon before you reach your limit. Does that include passengers? when you throw your caravan on the back, does that mean your current set up, with a 300kg tow ball weight added to your wagon, you are at the limit BEFORE you put passengers and any gear in the back? and fuel?

    • @Australian4x4Adventures

    How would it go with a 600 chassis extension to reduce rear overhang?

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  10 місяців тому

      That was part of the point of the video. With the size tray it doesn’t have anymore overhand then a standard car with a rear bar on.
      Of course if you done a chassis extension you could have a bigger tray or reduce the tray and have less overhang. But you’re adding another 20-30kg of work

    • @richardwalsh5570
      @richardwalsh5570 10 місяців тому +3

      @@Australian4x4Adventures I think the best part of a 600 extension is not about tray it's to get rear wheels further back and weight further forward of wheels. From physics point of view, should be better balanced?

    • @MRCtouring
      @MRCtouring 10 місяців тому +2

      When people normally do a chassis extension they opt for a longer tray meaning the overhang stays exactly the same. If you are doing a ute conversion purely for off-road purposes then you could definitely get it designed to reduce overhang but (I’m going to say all) extensions cut the chassis before the rear diff and push everything back as it’s a hell of a lot easier than removing the rear subframe in the case of a Patrol and moving it further back and remounting it in a different location.

  • @phillroo7871
    @phillroo7871 10 місяців тому +1

    Question, where do you put the spare and the Jerry cans in the ute conversion? Does the cost justify the means? I like the conversions they look cool, and as rob said, he has the best of both worlds and its horses for courses. In the end, If you can afford to do it and have the needs for it, go for it, other than that I will stick to the wagon.

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  10 місяців тому

      Spare wheel would either be back under the car if you don’t have a long range tank or up on the tray or canopy.
      Water would be built into a section under the tray so there’s no need for Jerry can holders if you don’t want them for fuel.
      I really love my wagon setup and I’m most likely going to stay with the wagon over a Ute chop ( mainly due to cost )
      But there are lots of ppl with money that just want what they want.
