- Eketorp is an Iron Age fort in southeastern Öland, Sweden, which was extensively reconstructed and enlarged in the Middle Ages. The fort has 3 building phases: 300-400AD and 400-650AD and 1170-1240AD. Throughout the ages the fortification has served a variety of somewhat differing uses: from defensive ringfort, to medieval safe haven and thence a cavalry garrison. In the 20th century it was further reconstructed to become a heavily visited tourist site and a location for re-enactment of medieval battles. Eketorp is the only one of the 19 known prehistoric fortifications on Öland that has been completely excavated, yielding a total of over 24,000 individual artifacts. The entirety of southern Öland has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Eketorp fortification is often referred to as Eketorp Castle.
The indigenous peoples of the Iron Age constructed the original fortification about 300 AD, a period known to have engendered contact between Öland natives with Romans and other Europeans. The ringfort in that era is thought to have been a gathering place for religious ceremonies and also a place of refuge for the local agricultural community when an outside enemy appeared.The circular design was believed to be chosen because the terrain is so
level that attack from any side was equally likely. The original diameter of this circular stone fortification was about 57 metres (187 ft). In the next century the stone was moved outward to construct a new circular structure of about 80 metres (260 ft) in diameter. At this juncture there were known to be about fifty individual cells or small structures within the fort as a whole. Some of these cells were in the center of the fortified ring, and some were actually built into the wall itself.In the late 600s AD the ringfort was mysteriously abandoned, and it remained unused until the early 11th century. This 11th century work generally built upon the earlier fort, except that stone interior cells were replaced with timber structures, and a second outer defensive wall was erected.

We are lucky this fort was stone. I bet many places were built on wooden stilts and or large logs laid as foundations. even earth sod foundations that mold in eventually. These places would be lost completely except for nails or hearths. Our ancestor used wood and earth a lot and the stuff just recycles itself. Our ancestors built as much as the Romans and Greeks but again wood doesn't last. Farms and towns are absorbed. Enjoyed the visit. Thank u Gare
The vast majority of scandinavian forts were built with wood and cob which go away in time. Even still there have been i think 1500 found in sweden alone. It makes sense they would use wood. They lived in a giant forest. The places that used stone generally didn't have as much timber available, such as in scotland or iceland or the middle east. There are always exceptions to the rule though.

Eketorp er en stor rekonstrueret jernalderlandsby med mere end 50 huse og gårde, omkranset af en 5 m høj ringmur, som er 80 m i diameter. På museet vises fund fra udgravninger og modeller af byen og byens udvikling.
Sod roofs are cool but the thatched and wood roofs are begging to be set on fire by fire arrows coming over the walls. If I lived a thousand years ago I'd say sire lets use sod for roofs lest we be consumed by fire. He'd probably like my forethought so much he'd give me a slave or perhaps a gold ring. Have fun Gare
ps: Government wont let us freely make and live in these fine inexpensive, hand made houses in Canada!...We would a need a>>>((Permit))! Then a dozen zoning licenses! and More permits !! ..This modern world sucks!
