    Do you just make these big byfaces just for fun? What is it for? Nice job thanks for taking us along 👍.

      I make them because I’m addicted to the craft 😊

    Crazy how different this is than spalling flint! Looks and sounds like some very delicate material. Nice job.

      Yup, flint and cherts can be much tougher. Obsidian is delicate but super easy to work.

    I’m SO wanting to get up to Glass Buttes. Love seeing someone using cut proof gloves! They have changed my knapping and just make so much sense. Glad you aren’t too macho to save yourself some cuts.

      We really are lucky to have access to Glass Buttes. Haha I can’t afford a trip to the ER so I have to wear gloves. Thanks for watching! ✌️

    This reminds me of those old cartoons where they would take an entire tree, and shave it down to just one toothpick.

    Pro tip on the mosquitoes, Bounce fabric softener, original scent ONLY. The other flavors don't work at all, but 1 sheet pinned to the back of your shirt keeps them away. 5 years flagging in some northern swamps taught me that. For black flies use organic vanilla scented lotion.

    re watching this video, after yet another trip to glass buttes. Looks like you've been doing this all your life. Born with a bopper in hand.....

    Dam! Too bad there's no natural deposits of obsidian here in upstate NY. Just watching you lightly tap and get those beautiful slabs is a real treat.

      Thank you! I am thankful that we have obsidian out here in the west.

    In my opinion, there has always been something so profound about splitting open a stone or fossil concretion and finding such unique wonders hidden within. At that moment, we become the first person to ever see that particular example of nature's artwork as evidenced in the different colors and striations contained inside. I don't know, the record of geological time discovered within these special artifacts has always given me cause to ponder our insignificance when weighed against the vastness of eternity.

      After a while knapping obsidian becomes somewhat predictable in the way the flakes run.

    What does a chunk like that cost

    • @knaptime
      @knaptime  2 роки тому

      A nodule of rough obsidian like the one I started with in this video would cost roughly $30-$40
      If you’re asking about the price of the biface I made, hmmm….you can email me about that if you want. Let me know and I’ll give you my email.

    Back when I was a kid, over 60 years ago, hunting rabbits along a creek bottom I found 2 points I was told were obsidian. Didnt mean a thing to me then, wish I knew what I did with them. Very good job!

    so if your goal is to make big bi faces yay, you did it. now show us how it is useful. why is the current generation of knappers so infatuated with size? have you learned parallel oblique flaking? you have skill, bump it up a few notches. the most treasured artifacts in museums aren't the big wealth blades. rather they are the ones that took MASTER level of work AFTER the bi faces were done. you want subs, hit the hard stuff
