    Hey just wanted to share some of my experiences that are a bit different than yours as a UCLA transfer myself:
    1. UCLA is NOT a dry campus. Alcohol is allowed at many public events such as art openings and school events. When I lived in the dorms in 2013/14, we were permitted to have alcohol if we were of age as long as it was behind closed doors. I was also an RA in 2015, and had really bad insomnia and would go off campus to smoke weed and come back to help me fall asleep at night. Weed/alcohol were really a non-issue for me.
    2. If you want to have a parking permit while on campus, you can get one guaranteed if you have an off-campus job, or a verifiable reason to be leaving campus. I was able to get one because I worked in Santa Monica.
    3. There are a TON of scholarships available for xfers through the alumni association, Wasserman scholars program, as well as research grants I'd look into. I got about $20,000 in aid as a transfer through scholarships over 3 years.
    Cheers!

      Hi! I just want to second this post. As a transfer student, I also was able to drink at museum/art events. Parking is given priority to students who have an outside job. I was also a recipient of about 30k in scholarship money that allowed me to graduate debt free. I feel like there are totally ways around the system to make it work for you. Uber isn't the only way to get around- UCLA offers free bus shuttles for students living on the hill to go run their errands in the village. In my opinion this is all about networking and exploring what resources UCLA has available- since it is such a large campus, it is easy to get lost in it but if you talk to other students, you will learn about the endless resources UCLA offers.

    A couple years ago they added an option for transfers to do a 2-day orientation instead of the 1-day one, and guess what happened... hardly anyone chose that option. It was so unpopular that they didn't bring it back.

    • @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege
      @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege  5 років тому +2

      I could see why people would opt for the 1 day option if it was presented as something that could be done in one day. I personally had to take time off work and travel to go to orientation, which was an issue for me but if I had known then what I know now I definitely would have preferred a multi-day orientation that was more thorough.

    Just so you know, it’s violating federal minimum wage ($7.50) that’s considered illegal but it still SUCKS that they don’t pay you as much as you need that’s ridiculous

    • @juulee
      @juulee 4 роки тому

      I think she is confused about what minimum wage is in California (which is actually $12 an hour). Also, if her friends are part of the federal work study program, the pay is less than the same job for a full time student. Federal work study programs count as financial aid and allow the students flexible hours around their course schedule, part time hours to accommodate them and (in theory) are supposed to be providing training/skills that will set the student up for success when they have a legitimate job outside of school that doesn't count toward their financial aid.
      TLDR: No regular job or work study job is paying $7.50 or even remotely close to that low at UCLA. Hope that clarifies!

    Hey Hailey! I’ve been reading up on community college and transferring and I found that it’s not recommended for stem students to transfer. On the UC website it says it’s recommended that they start and finish there. Have you heard or know anything about that?

    • @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege
      @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege  5 років тому +2

      Hi Angie, I've never head this before. The only reason I think this would be a problem might be because stem students may have more upper div classes than other majors. This may cause them to take longer to graduate, and in some cases IGETC may not be acceptable for certain majors. However, I am not a stem major so I am not familiar with their requirements. If you are concerned about this you could try reaching out to the department advisor of your major at the schools you are interested in. I personally know a lot of transfer students who are stem majors.

    • @angiemartinez7414
      @angiemartinez7414 5 років тому

      Hailey Dollar thank you for replying! Im guessing the reason they say not to is because stem has most of their hard hitting classes 1st and 2nd year and all their gen eds 3rd and 4th year. So maybe transfering in with all your gen eds done might mess that up somehow

      Hey Judith, congratulations to you and your BF on your acceptances! That's a huge accomplishment and you guys should be very proud! I have to admit that I'm not usually one to give my opinion on other people's situations, but in your case I just want to warn you about how taxing this will be - mentally, emotionally, physically and financially. I would strongly urge you to reconsider this plan. This is a pretty long commute for both of you and traffic in this area is really, really bad. It will automatically knock at least 2 hours off your day that you could be studying or relaxing. This will be really hard to balance with the demands of adjusting to the academic rigor of university level education. Plus, the cost of gas when you are commuting from this distance on a regular basis will be very high, along with parking passes at each of your schools. Parking is also really hard to find at UCLA (not sure what it's like at UCSB), so I can just imagine your BF commuting ~2 hours one way and spending another 45 min to an hour looking for somewhere to park on or around campus. I hope to help you see it from another perspective. It might sound like a decent idea now but once you guys actual start doing it day in and day out it will become a total chore. Hi there, it is possible to get a single dorm. but very rare. The cost of living in Westwood is very expensive. I am not aware of your financial situation, but if it is anything like most other college students, getting our own apartment/even your own room in an apartment will probably be out of the question. And housing fees are separate from tuition.

    thank you! this was very helpful for me considering i’ll being going to college in a year. i have a question though. if i earn an associates degree in high school, can i go to ucla making that into a bachelors? the associates degree will be in multidisciplinary studies but does that mean that if i chose to make it a bachelors it still has to be the same major? i want to major in psychology but idk what to do :/ and i’m also from out of state so i don’t know if they’ll accept my dual credit. i hope you can answer my question and have a good day!

      Hi there! Thanks for watching. I am a little confused by your question. Are you enrolled in both high school and community college courses simultaneously ? Is that what you mean by dual credit? I am not sure about which credits transfer from out of state institutions. You would have to speak to an advisor from UCLA about that. If you attend UCLA at the undergraduate level, the only degree that can result from that is a bachelor's. UCLA does not award associate's degrees. A bachelor's degree is completely separate from an associate's degree. They do not have to be in the same field. I hope that helps!

      Hailey Dollar yes i will be taking college courses next year (which is what i meant by dual credit) while enrolled in high school. my biggest concern really was just wondering if they’re able to accept my college credit ESPECIALLY since i’m from out of state and i have no idea how to ask them that.

      As far as I am aware, the coursework can only be checked for transferability once you have been admitted to the school. You could always contact the registrar/admissions and see if there is any other info they can give you on the matter. Hope that helps!

    Here is the geographical demographics of the top-20 feeder ccs to UCLA:
    - 1-5 are in LA County, with Santa Monica College being 7 miles from UCLA
    - Moorpark College is in Ventura County
    - Mount San Antonio is in LA County
    - De Anza is in San Mateo County (Edit: Santa Clara County, the city of Cupertino - nice city)
    - Diablo Valley is in Contra Costa County
    - East LA College, LA Valley are in LA County
    - Irvine Valley and Saddleback are in Orange County
    - Santa Barbara City College is in Santa Barbara County
    - Foothill is in San Mateo County (Very good cc, lots of foreign students)
    - Orange Coast is in Orange County
    - College of the Canyons is in LA County
    - Fullerton is in Orange County
    - LA City College is in LA County
    - Miracosta is in San Diego County
    The top 20 feeders for the 2018-19 academic year accounted for 69% of all California ccs. There are community colleges from which UCLA draws outside of CA, with Washington being the largest source.
    Hailey, based on some this data and some uneducated guesses, I'm going to say that the administration allots for greater provisions for those entering as frosh (75% of time spent at UCLA w/ guaranteed housing as opposed to cc transfers with only 50%) because there are more local students who matriculate at UCLA from the ccs, whom I presume the administration at UCLA probably believes will commute -- rightly or wrongly in their thought.
    But, the frosh at UCLA are more of a geographic diverse group, certainly. For the academic year 2018-19, ~ 20% of the incoming were from out of state, and ~10% were international and a significant % of frosh are from NorCal, LoCal (San Diego), Santa Barbara, and generally outside of LA County.
    Santa Monica College which accounts for a significant portion of cc transfers to UCLA every year -- in 2018-19 they accounted for 15% of these students . . . are atypical of the normal set of cc transfers: typically rich westside of LA kids; foreign students who come to SMC to try xfer to UCLA, and some oos kids who are attempting the same as the internationals.
    i think, too, the admin sees cc xfers as mature and this is undoubtedly reflected in the age of this subset with average age being ~ 21 as opposed to someone with junior standing having an age of 20 or so, so they probably assume that they are able to handle off-campus housing better, with some having fended for themselves all throughout their college attendance. (Again, rightly or wrongly...)
    The good news is, that you and other cc xfers have saved loads of cash, ~ half of your college undergraduate years. And it is proven fact that cc xfers to UCLA have just as much chance for admission to Hopkins and UCSF Med, Harvard and Yale Law, NYU Stern, etc.
    Best of Luck in all your future endeavors; you're very well-spoken and obviously very intelligent. UCLA is lucky to have you.

      Not completing my thoughts...
      In 2018-19, the xfer students to UCLA have made a big step upward in gpa. In past years, the average (UCLA before used to compute averages for cc students instead of reporting 25th and 75th-%iles) for xfers was ~ 3.67 - 3.70. Now, the median is probably > 3.80, and the average is probably ~ 3.77. I would guess that this would -> about a 3.4 gpa at UCLA, a bit of diminution, but not a great deal. Again, BOL and I'll sub and watch some of your other YTs.

No, I graduated years back; I'm just a quasi-stats geek who's interested in a lot of things related to UCLA, and I just recently crunched some data related to UCLA admissions for those entering 2018-19, both for incoming frosh and xfer students. Since your emphasis is on those who've come from 2-year colleges, I thought I would present some of the numbers related to the top cc feeders and the step up in stats of the incoming students. I hope you're able to get out in two years to save yourself $$$, and I'm sure you've already contemplated summer school to graduate timely. Best of luck.

    in the University of California system Asians completely dominate admission. So what the likes of super left universities like Berkeley and UCLA have done is break Asian/Pacific Islander into 7+ different categories (chinese, japanese, filipino etc) to present the false appearance that Whites still are the majority and are therefore to blame for low numbers of black & latino enrollment. If one ethnic groups dominant enrollment was the sole factor to point to why blacks and latinos are underrepresented than you would have to lay the blame at the feet of asian over representation in the University of California system.

    • @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege
      @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege  3 роки тому

      I don't really know enough about the demographics at UCLA to comment on that, but I suspect that you can't really pinpoint one specific thing as the sole factor for underrepresentation of any group.

    UCLA needs to build a football stadium on it's campus. It doesn't make sense for students to commute to the Rose Bowl to attend a game.

    • @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege
      @HaileyDollarGoesToCollege  4 роки тому

      That would be cool, but I just don't see how that would work out logistically. If you have been to campus then you know that there is nowhere to put a football stadium, not to mention the lack of parking and the tremendous influx of traffic that would create in the already crowded Westwood/Bel Air area. I think these are the exact reasons why the Rose Bowl became the home stadium in the first place.
