I love that you bring these (what can be) shame filled experiences into the light. So helpful for all of us - newbies and more experienced alike!

One reason for ending therapy I often encounter working with children is that the immediate symptom disappears (like bed-wetting or stuttering) and the parents often immediately take it as a sign that everything is okay now and there's no need to come again. Sometimes (but not often) I don't even get to say goodbye to the child, they just don't show up, and the parents text me that the reason for therapy is no longer there. There are some rare cases that they come back after a time if the symptoms reappear under stress or significant life-changes. Other than that, all the reasons I've encountered were listed, and to my own surprise I felt really relieved after watching this video.

So much of what you say resonates. Including the use of the word, 'termination' rather than something like ... 'graduation'

I love that you brought up this topic! I have been having to be very intentional with myself that people dropping off are likely less often to be related to something I did right or wrong and that my job is to be present for people when they are ready. So glad to have some external validation that this happens.

My therapist resigned without notice recently due to her own health concerns, so I didn't get to talk to her about it or say goodbye. Even though I saw her the week before

When clients pass away. School did NOT prepare us for the grief that you experience from losing a client.

Another reason to "terminate" may be change in schedules and lack of availability for new needed time slots?
Also love the thought process behind not returning and impact on therapist. I've heard the theory of give the greatest interpretation behind others actions which is exactly what you said. Maybe they feel good and don't see a reason to call to say they're not returning.

Yes thank you! I thought of the scheduling reason partway through editing. Happens to me all the time. I like that phrasing of giving the greatest interpretation to others, that’s a great approach!

I have had minor clients go to live with their other parent and they do not bring them.
