  • Dakota County is home to the only farm in the U.S. that is completely owned and operated by Hmong farmers. The Hmong American Farmers Association was created in 2011, to address the injustice in food and farming industries around lack of access to land and resources. Nearly a decade later in 2022, the non-profit bought 155 acres of land to grow all sorts of mixed vegetables, fruits, flowers, and more.

For those who don't know, the Hmong were our greatest allies in the Vietnam War. Many were converts from the Catholic religion won over by American missionaries to the Baptist faith. They were systematically hunted down by the communist after the war's end almost to the point of extinction, living under primitive conditions. We owe them a serious debt of gratitude.

The more of us that reclaim a little slice of America from Big Ag, the better. 155 acres could be the start to a real community there. Two thumbs up from me!

Where is the credit to the rest of the Hmong folks who are not part of the association but have reached this goal (purchased their own farms) long before this farm was purchased? This is definitely not the first Hmong purchased farm in the nation as I know of many other farms purchased by Hmongs decades ago.
