- To The Top Crane | In this video I use one of our Manitex 50128 boom trucks to recover a Beechcraft B18 that landed with out all of its landing gear down. The plane suffered a mechanical failure of one of the landing gear components. The flight crew circled the airport for quite a while trying to get it sorted out. When they got low on fuel, they had no choice but to attempt a single gear landing. Ultimately they were successful in landing without too much damage to the plane. My hats off to the crew for such and amazing recovery of a situation that very well could've been catastrophic.

As an airport operator for 39 years I have recovered (picked up) countless airplanes where the gear either collapsed(like this one) or, more typically, the pilot forgot to lower the landing gear. My mantra is the same. DO NO ADDITIONAL DAMAGE. Great job, sir.
thats Matt Younkins beech 18, family has a lot of history in the airshow world. look up his routine in that very 18 its quite something
He is one heck if a pilot. He had to land this one on one tire, then fly it like a unicycle until it wouldn't fly anymore. As it slowed down, he veered it off the side of the runway and touched the wing down in the grass. Many thanks for watching! 🏗

Back in the early eighties I watched two F15s take off at Lambert airport in st Louis. You could feel the big plate glass windows move. They went down the runway then seemed like straight up and gone. Remember it like it was yesterday. So cool.

F-15s are one of the few planes that literally can fly straight up in unrestricted climb. It has more thrust than weight and can climb to 30,000 feet in about 60 seconds.

Excellent video! Hope you are back for a while. What you do looks like great fun so I bought a crane in the rain (don't do that) So I needed a 2nd crane to fix the first one. (leaking telescope cylinders)

Picking up an aircraft is always difficult. No convenient lifting points on top. Those engine mounts they hooked to were well forward of center of gravity so the tail would have stayed on the ground the entire time. To have lifted it level you would have needed to add links to the tail tie down point to shift the spreader bar to the rear. More over the center of the wing. Trying to sling under the fuselage would have likely wrinkled something.

I can imagine what the F-16 take-off was like, as I lived in Darwin Australia for 3yrs used to go down to the end of the runway when the RAAF were doing exercises with the F-111c they ran doing emergency take-off using the afterburners, was even better at night.

Some info on the aircraft it’s quite a special plane a beech 18 built as an AT-7C for the air Corp in 1943 it flies acrobatics for air shows and as far as I know is bone stock the engines are radial style rolls Royce R985s putting out 450hp a piece the one on the captains side will need to be rebuilt as is standard with all prop strikes
This is kinda common of a failure on these usually it’s the gear won’t come up
As for the cost a used one is around 350k to 500k this being a good condition I’d say more the 500
Thank for the info! I think this one has some special modifications for the aerobatic routine. I'm pretty sure it is set up for a night show with lots of custom lighting and such. R985 is Pratt and Whitney not Rolls-Royce. This is called the wasp junior and is 450hp each.
They sell for 75-125k for a project. Around 200k for a fully restored one.
Not sure where you got any of your information from but it's off.
Its a Beechcraft 18 aka "Twin Beech" Production was around the late 30s to late 60s I think.

Thank you for another nice video! Have you considered buying a power-bank? It's just an external rechargeable battery that outputs USB power to charge anything that charges from a USB cable. Usually quite affordable and cheaper than camera batteries. Kind regards.

Unfortunately, there will have to be a full landing gear system overhaul, Left engine will have to be removed and torn down, inspected and rebuilt (Prop Strike) and then the left wing and airframe will have to be inspected..
While I agree in your assessment that it doesn't seem that bad, (it most certainly could have been worse), it's a lot more damaged than it appears.
As you said though, the most important thing, was nobody was hurt, and all walked away. The Beautiful Beech 18 can be repaired/refurbished.
Humans.... Much more fragile.
You mentioned you didn't know the value, but from an armchair guess, based on what I can see, it looks like a fairly pristine plane. (prior to incident)
Ballpark guess? 300k - 500k. Could even be more. I can't say.

That Beach 18 has a interesting background since new. They are beautiful planes. Beach 18’s vary in price. A good flying example is about 300K. Price moves with engine times since overhaul, avionics and other items.

What does it mean "evening its weight out"?
2:42 with the upside down shackle does this have to do with the slide load the straps on the plane will exert? Does it’s orientation matter when it’s one strap connected to another?
Shackles should be placed with the pin towards the hook if possible. But I wasn't concerned with the shackle orientation. All of the rigging we used was WAY overrated for this pick. Many thanks for watching! 🏗
Shackles work best when they are loaded perpendicular to the pin. That, combined with best practice dictating only one connection should bear on the pin, means for *most* typical rigging, having pin toward the hook is a safe bet. You rarely go from multiple rigging points from your lifting device to a single point down to your load.
Single sling to single sling connections, it doesn’t really matter. And, in some instances like the top spreader bar connections, the shackle has to be the “wrong” way around. When using a shackle to choke a sling, orientation is important because as you tighten up on the strap, it can unscrew the pin if its the wrong way around.

If there's one person you can trust when talking about weight it's a pilot we are required by law to know the exact weight of the aircraft and where the weight is located
