In the 50's & 60's a great uncle was the manager there. He used to let my parents in for free if the bought a box of Jaffas each. Sadly he died before I was born but my parents went often they said.
I remember going there in the late 80's /early 90's to watch movies. It would be great to see it re-opened as an entertainment venue for bands and live theatre.
Ah, the Roxy. It was how theatres should be. So many good memories from the 70s, some of which involved back row experiences inappropriate to further describe here. If I ever bump into you I’ll tell you about the amusing “popcorn incident”. Wasn’t aware of much of its other history. Interesting stuff. Thanks heaps.
My first visit to The Roxy was to see " Close Encounters of the Third Kind " . I knew someone who saw "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" there when the auditorium was in its original format in 1968 . I have been fortunate to have toured the building twice during the 1990s , and saw behind the stage curtain where there were HUGE banks of speakers such as my father once described , somewhat to my disbelief when I was a teenager . Another cinema with a similar speaker setup which I later toured was The Regent in Wollongong . I saw the exterior of this recently and it was looking quite sad , however , there was evidence of work being done to the building , hopefully for the best . According to a local newspaper article from the late 1980s , the Roxy organ was owned by the Baldwin family and was in storage in a warehouse which burnt down , destroying the organ . I actually knew Ray Baldwin at the time .
I made a similar comment on a video about the Metro site when the Roxy was discussed . There was a reply that the current owner proposes " to do just that ! " ( Restore the cinema as a live performance venue ) . I will attempt to find the video and comments .

The future of this theatre really concerns me. It should be restored to its original Stalls/Dress Circle for live theatre
sadly that wont happen

Would have been call if you could have gotten in
Are you not supposed to break in urban guerilla style and show us the inside?
