Especially being out of the loop. Rookies/call-ups probably got the short end of the stick. Went to a Dodgers game back in 2017. Only 'Pro-League' game I've actually been to. I've had this argument with some people, but I really think some of these contracts are UNDER paid due to how much absurd money they bring in for the franchise. They directly and indirectly bring in BILLIONS through jerseys/stadium food sales/tickets/advertising/etc. Also with inflation, the later years are underpaid to the market. Like Patrick Mahomes signed a 10 year, $500M contract and a few years in he isn't the highest paid QB anymore. He was when it was signed. AND he's locked in for several more years so he will continue to fall comparatively to other QBs over time based on market trends. Obviously no one would say no to a massive long term deal, but for the owner, long term it's a steal if he's your franchise and plays at that highest level.
I completely agree that a long-term deal benefits the owner more than the player in most cases! I think players are eager to break records, but I'll be curious to see how Ohtani's $68M in 2033 compares to other annual pays.
I tend to think the "fairest" metric to judge a contract is by percentage of the team's salary cap but unfortunately that doesn't apply to plenty of leagues. So perhaps the players contract as a percentage of the club's net worth would be a fair way to look at things?
