What Happens When You Plant Avocado Trees in "Good Soil"

    It looked like the same up until about 3 months ago.
    Good soil is counter-intuitive when it comes to trees. Most people, nurseries, and academics think that good soil has amendments, lots of organic matter, fertilizers, and other biodegradable products. In fact, good soil is simple, and is found in nature. Good soil is mineral, inert, and has no organic materials in it. In every forest on earth, trees grow in mineral soil, and feed on the organic layer directly above it. It's an important distinction--the organic stuff is never in the root zone. Organic materials in the root zone eventually rot, and the rotting process produces lethal methane gases. These gases are deadly to most living creatures, plants included.

    EXCELLENT INFO AJ! So many gardeners think you put stuff in hole.... not good! I’d spray garden phos on any tree that goes into the hole to protect from the root rot . I did this to an old bacon avocado tree and the thing took off!

      My neighbor at the time was retired head gardener from Arcadia’s arboretum and noticed that a bacon avocado tree I planted died told him How I used cactus soil he said the only way to bring back the soil would be to dig four feet down replace the dirt with potting soil or to release the worms and try again in six months after releasing the worms covered the area with grass clippings it appeared to work

    Yeah, avocados are moody. After trial and error on my part I have learned to place the root-ball directly on the ground and mound up soil all around it. Like a huge 10 foot wide pitchers mound for a 15 gallon tree. 100% success so far. Oh, and about 8-10 inches of leaf litter bark mulch on top.

    Dangg. Sorry to see that. Lessons learned!! I'm in Florida and there is a ton of sand. Root knot nematodes suck. I have my avocados 6-8 inches higher than grade. Some places near the beach or homestead are on huge limestones and the trees love that too

    I came over here to learn about avocados and got a lesson on dirt. I’m real new at this and I just repotted my lemon tree and included everything I heard about in the planting mix including some wood mulch because it was supposed to help keep the soil aerated. I just did this less than a week ago. Did I kill my tree? We don’t have any native soil here in our condo, growing in containers.

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  3 роки тому +2

      I don't think you killed your tree. The tree can survive for some time in bad soil. I like to plant my container citrus in decomposed granite. It's 100% mineral and citrus trees seem to love it. Any home depot or lowes has it

    I transplanted my 2 year old avocado seed and it did not like it! The roots were so long and strong I cut some dead ones but not all the roots. The leaves are curling brown on the side. I left it in the pot for about a month. Blended potting soil and cactus but it does not like the cactus soil. (The nursery I went said it would be ok) Will be repotting in a new soil blend. A citrus and moisture soil blend.

    If this happens within 2 months of planting the tree, then it may be the soil amendment. But after 9 years, the amendment should already be gone. It won't suddenly start to rot and kill the tree roots. Something else killed the tree.

    • @AJTheGraftMan

    Thats what l learned the hard way too, lost 3 or so, putting organic material in the soil. However Gary is big on first washing off the woody potting soil that the avo comes in, I've done this, but often sets the tree back a lot. 3 trees planted w/o washing have done fine so far, both are 7 to 5 years old and thriving. So perhaps the native worms and bacteria safely break down this wood?
    Thx for all the GREAT posts.😀

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  3 роки тому +1

      Yes I've noticed the same with avocados. They have a hard time bouncing back once they get their roots washed off. I'm not sure about the native worms safely breaking down wood. I hope it's true.
      Thanks :)

      @@AJTheGraftMan when I was younger, I thought compost was so good, I should grow it 50-50 mix with miracle grow. I lost several citrus including a ponderosa and almost lost Persian lime. Nearly everything died and now I use coco coir a vermiculite 50-50 and everything added on top. Plants happy, just don't get enough light really. Then I found Laguna...explained everything and as funny as it is, spraying the citrus with sugar water actually kinda works. Dark green leaves and one lemon on tree now. Laguna should be like the holy grail of plant knowledge.

    I'm sorry that you loss your very unique avocado tree. I hope that you grafted a shoot from this tree into one of your other avocados, if you did you can reproduce the tree. I found that mixing in a two inch layer of gravel at the bottom of the hole and mounding the tree up 5 or more inches prevents the roots from rottening. It took killing several avocado trees to finally learn this.

    Hey mate, great channel. I have a question, I’m from australia and looking at “amending” my soil with some vermiculite, I saw on another channel that composts and wood heavy soils cause problems down the line. What’s your thoughts on vermiculite, I haven’t heard of that granite product you mentioned here I don’t believe it’s widely available in aus.

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Vermiculite is great. I use it in my garden sometimes. It's completely mineral so you can amend your soil with it. It's basically crushed up rock that's been heated and then allowed to cool. I use it in my potting mix because it aerates the mix and holds water well.
