Really nice watching. I have for years been gathering outdoor kit and using modern materials but increasingly find myself intrigued by what kit was perfectly useable only a generation ago, and was the normal materials for use going back aeons before. As a result I'm now moving my outdoor kit towards more sustainable materials wherever I can. For me it all started when I realised I had gone through five pairs of modern material boots whereas my wife was still using twenty year old leather boots. And then it was canvas tents, and now bags. I haven't yet moved away from using sleeping bags, and although I've always coveted down, I am still using a sleeping bag from the mid'90's. I might try a wool blanket on a trip one time but I'll wait for warmer weather! Subscribed.

    • @gilesbinyon
      @gilesbinyon  Рік тому +1

Thanks very much for that support Chuck. Great to hear about your kit progression and sounds like you are getting on okay with the more traditional stuff. It can be heavier but I find that makes me think about reducing the actual amount carried. Thx again 😊👍

I know weight is an issue with you, (me too, I turned 61 last week, the spirit is still willing but the flesh is weak!) and you like to stick around the 10kg mark, but I'd be tempted to take out that woollen sleeping bag you had out recently, I really liked the look of that. The variation on sleeping position worked but it still would have been rough. Your 'disturbed night' is the epitome of English understatement, Giles! I was in the army for the best part of a decade so I know what a 'disturbed night' can be like. But you get through it and you know you can do it again. I doffs me lid to you. We have to be of a similar vintage (1961) but very different build. I am leaning more your vegetarian/vegan way with a switch to a sugar free diet but mostly meat, eggs and leafy vegetables, no sugar in my tea and beer is a rare treat indeed. We'll see if it helps when our weather turns colder but I hope to change my channel name to 'Skinny Bloke Skiving'. Love your work as always. That shot scrabbling down the cutting meant you went down, set up camera, scrambled up then back down again! The effort is appreciated.

You are right about the filming - it is deffo a lot slower going when you are going backwards etc with the camera.

    Good Morning Giles ..
👍👍👍 .. always a pleasure seeing you again and hearing the hillbillies sawing and plucking away at their instruments 😁. A really catchy little ditty and recognisable anywhere 😊.
Old disused 'workings'. Watching this always gives me a sense of nostalgia. Going back to my days in the mining industry (and now for something completely different .. 'useless history' to follow .. 🙄😏).
Mining Shaft Complexes no longer in production and that had been shut down and fenced off. Exploring the Shaft Offices (having been in the Industry, Security where present, normally treated the incursion sympathetically). Offices once busy, vibrant. Men coming and going, Miners signing on and off in their individual timesheets (a document where one, as a Supervisor, NEVER allowed any error, especially regarding 'working pro rata's', unless one wished to incur the wrath of the Union Shop Steward and worse 😳). Shift reports .. production figures, accident reporting, requests for material to be ordered, the 'powder' (explosives) order sheets, etc, etc. Hearing from the Mine Captain's Office, a 'chewing out' taking place behind a closed door regarding some transgression or other .. not 'making call', and more..
Now .. deserted .. dusty. Often still with some remnants therein of days gone by. Furnishings, paperwork, forms, files and more. The passing of an era .. gone ..
More 'useless information' 🙄😏. Your gloves.
I had to, just this week past, move a metal cupboard from our bay in the flat complex communal undergound parking area. The Authorities are installing heated insulated water piping. Not, as one would think, for the individual households, but, as I am led to believe, to protect the integrity of the water piping feeding such households in case of extremely cold weather and extended power outages. The entire neighbourhood is being so serviced with major road excavation taking place and pipe installations surprisingly deep. The water heat generation will take place at a central point somewhere in the town which will then service all and sundry. Method (now hear this). WOOD. (with gas / other as backup). Very pragmatic, the Swiss 😊.
Back to the gloves. During the cupboard relocation, I discovered a forgotten 'stash' of gloves, similar to yours, leather and cotton. From my mining days, we knew them as 'Chrome Leather' Gloves. I used only them as the alternate 'plastic' versions would end up after a day or two with a smell 😳 that could never be persuaded to go away 😏. So, a bonus for me 👍😊.
Giles, that was quite a yummy-looking chilli that you rustled up there .. I must give that a go sometime. All credit to your commitment to minimalism. I am not yet strong enough to survive on one pot .. boiling, cooking, eating AND drinking 😁. Although, to save on water, I am experimenting with using a slice of bread to clean out and dry the pot after food prep .. the only time where one can eat the dish cloth 😊. There .. my version of Tolstoy's War and Peace is finally over .. 👏.
Thanks for sharing, my friend .. another good one, and until next time, take care .. Tommy

Hi Giles. I can never get tired of watching your setup, I really love it. I have here next to me a disused railway line with it's accompanying bridges.
In fact there's a bridge that closed off that i have been on many years ago, it crosses the river tay and is a work of art. There is even a trap door and you can walk downa ladder into a lowerpart which was unseen to the eye. Platforms to walk with piles of pigeon poo. I'll try get a shot of it for you one day. It's called cargill viaduct if you're interested. It's made of iron and bricks and the train crossed the river.
What's also of interest is the way trees and shrubs reclaim the line. So our line is a walkway and well used, but the trees encroach. Hawthorns, Pinus, Blackthorn, but really interesting is the willow. There is none about. Yet here it grows, I can only imagine the birds are depositing seed there in a neat bundle of fertilizer and they are now present. What's also of interest is the amount of birds that are there, in particular yellowhammers. Quite a few wild flowers too. I would imagine the closed off tunnel you saw could potentially be a home for bats. Interesting to see. thank you sir, great feed too!

Thanks very much Chris. Really appreciate you watching. And that’s a great comment- there’s some good pictures of Cargill Viaduct online. It looks amazing and I think I could see the walk ways you mention. That would be a fun day exploring alright.
Yeah, it’s wonderful how nature claims back what it loaned to us. Think our species has got too bold and forgotten that nature always will out in the end. It’s beginning to look like ‘pay back’ time is coming for civilisation …..oh boy … how did I get onto this morbid theme !!! 😂🤣😂🤣

@@gilesbinyon Hello again, indeed I hear you, I have ths idea now it's better to look back to be able to move forward. Technology can be good but it can go too far as well.
I now use a willow basket for my shopping. Fill it up, empty at cahier and refill. Easy, I'm the only person doing it here.
Cutting up an ice cream container to use as plant labels, better to use wood of course but it's a start, reusing the plastic to which i'm trying use less and less.
Trouble is the source of the problem is the supermarkerts, everything is in plastic!
Rewilding is a battle, it's hard to change mindsets, I'm 100% for it but I fear not many of us are.
I had some people come up to me and complain about beaver damage. I said it's not beaver, it was the wind, you can see the roots are upturned Oh they said and then proceeded to tell me everything bad about the beavers!
Funny thing was on the other side of the river they had bulldozed down all the trees to build a fishing hut!
      That seemingly is OK.
I could go on ha ha, have a great day.

@@northernembersoutdoors1045 thanks Chris. And I feel your exasperation Mate.
Great to hear the things you are doing to be ‘part of the solution’.
But we need to attack this urgent problem from the very top as well as more local levels. And that unfortunately means breaking the inappropriate connection between Business and Government. Not sure about Holyrood but I fear it is rife at Westminster. If this were to happen our leaders would be free to implement measures without constantly being stone-walled by powerful lobbying.

Good one, and it doesn’t add much weight to your pack. Another idea uses two wool blankets to make what we call a cowboy or Boy Scout roll. But, that would add some weight to your pack, but only in colder weather. Speaking of weather, we’ve had 7” of snow so far and it’s going to be pretty cold this coming week. Again, excellent video. Hi Giles, great video as always sir. Your dried vegetables, do you dehydrate them yourself? I've tried buying them and was disappointed with the taste and quality, so now I prep, small quantities and pack them in medium sized Mylar pouches - I wash out and reuse the pouches regularly.

Yeah, it’s easy to dehydrate stuff at home - I have a very old and basic dehydrator. Some things are nicer than others for taste/texture etc when cooked. Eg mushrooms = good, onions = don’t even bother 😂😂 But great for weight and bulk savings if you have the water. Cheers 👍

Thanks very much for watching and commenting Jerry.
I think the holes in the veg steamer have a negligible effect on the fire. They are very small and so soon covered with ash. They might even help to get the fire started. A timber fire (as opposed to coal) works better with the air coming from above - but as I say the holes are covered quickly.
At less than half the price and different size options (mine is medium I think - about 29cm diameter) I prefer the veg steamer 😊👍

Haven’t sussed out what happened with the tarp yet. It seemed to cure itself later that night. I have washed it ( using Tech Wash) to try and get the smoke out of the canvas - not sure if that would interfere with the swelling of the fibres … 🤔 Cheers 😊👍

Hello again Giles, it's so great to see you out and about, on yet another thoroughly enjoyable, Giles. A back-to-basics video with the staple camp set-up.
Were they 'soft shackles' I saw hanging from your pack at about 3:14? They looked very similar. I've been experimenting with soft shackles since I saw them on a video, and have found them very useful to have about.
Thanks for showing us more of the hidden parts of the countryside in southern England, places that are now usually unseen. It's amazing that places which were once busy hubs and veins, integral parts of things, can then fall so silent and become hidden away again. But then on the other hand, perhaps it's a relief that they can!
I'm glad that it worked out well for you sleeping sideways-on with the fire, nothing worse than cold feet I reckon. The cooler space at the back might be good used for storing things.
I loved the way you used your pot hook (coat hanger?) to secure the rope you use to wrap your bedding up. A good example of the multi-use principle.
The old disused railway lines used to be a source of endless adventures and exploration when I was growing up. There were a lot of them in our area, and we lived on a farm near where some of the lines used to cross each other. There were still small brick railway buildings dotted around with proper fireplaces in, they would have made for an easy night out! Over the years there was less and less of the original railway remains left, as they got turned into footpaths and tidied up.
Watching this I now realise it's now been far too long since I last slept out. Three months I think! I'll definitely have to start planning my next one.
Thanks again, Giles, always such a pleasure.
Take care and I hope to see you again before too long.

Thank you very much as always Adrian. Really appreciate your kind support my Friend.
I don’t have any ‘soft shackles, but they sound like a very interesting option- must check them out or perhaps make some with natural fibres if possible.
Yeah, these old structures are always atmospheric I reckon. And I know what you mean about those little brick maintenance huts - they are still occasionally present along side working railways. And they always seem to have a lovely little fireplace chimney as you say !!!!
Yeah, lying across the fire really helped - lucky I’m so short 😂🤣😂🤣
Hoping you get the chance to get out soon Bud. I know what it’s like - sometimes ‘life’ just gets in the way …. oh hum …. .
Thx again as always Adrian. Keep safe and well my Friend 🍻👍
