When you are traveling along the highway, bring satellites and drop them in the systems close to stations. The small once have a range of 30km, so try and place it so it captures as many stations as possible. This will then help you when you buy your first auto trader ship. They will look at all the stations where they have data and work out the best trade. If you do not have a satellite at a station, the information will become obsolet after 5h. The trader will then only see the stations in its local area and you will not be making a profit. So go buy satellites before you embark on the highway, put down satellites at stations, buy a trader and make it automated, then just watch the cash roll in.
Oh Thats good Advice. I was considering adding a Trader once I get the required 400k for a Proper Transport Ship and at least another 100k for him to actually Trade with. Guess I need to calculate some extra Money to Buy Satellites.
So, we should keep buying satellites and deploy them at each station we find at all systems ? I have almost never seen any station being 30 KM from another one, so I guess we need to deploy 1 satellite per station ?

Borons always talk too much. But that's because in lore, as aquatic lifeforms they also communicate with each other with shifting skin colors, tentacle gestures and emission of pheromones, something most races naturally can't. So they have to talk a little more to convey the full scope of their information. Also they''re trying to be very, very polite.
For anyone who's new to this series of games, the X-games can be *really* hard at the start due to the steep learningcurve. But they are totally worth biting down on and not letting go until you've learned them.. I got an unhealthy amount of hours in X3:Terran Conflict.
100% of videos ppl are trying to do things. Never saw real mining, real buying ships, ordering stuff. Its like 100% of players are newbies. You play for 4 hours and stay on the same place. I really try to like this game, but it sucks.
for the data vault you don't have to pick up the artifact hitting it with the repair laser is enough to get it. also you can get up from your set with CTRL+D. and vaults are not random they seem to bee in the same place for everyone. the trade filter can also be turned on or off with one of the button left of the search bar. you can also hire crew from the ship upgrade screen in equipment docks or the corresponding shipyard/warf depending in the ship size.
So, I played X3 back in the dim times in the long long ago and never really got that far into it, but I got X4 because it looked cool and these tutorials have been SO VERY HELPFUL! Thank you so much!
Thanks man. When I first tried it I got a bit confused as to what to do at the beginning. Now after your input on this crucial matter, I think I'll have another go.
Hi Grayduster, new to your videos, love it, love how you explain and the detail. Thank you. Also thank you for all the people here commenting and leaving tips etc.
Repair missions (spanner icon) are also great to start out with. I did 3 and they were all close by and take 5 mins to pop the space suit on and repair the object.....Easy 150k. Do them quick before they get nerfed :)
That also sounds good - one thing to note on the leak repair missions is that if you scan the leak, you'll potentially get a module blueprint for a station, but you may fail the mission itself. So it might be worthwhile to repair the leaks and just buy the blueprints (at least until you have the ones available for sale!)
Crystal mining with your starter ship, got 6M in 20 minutes at the asteroid field next to the starting station. You'll get some illegal wares at the same time, but that's the Fun(tm) bit ;)

Another great video. You make it look so easy to move your ship and character about. I know I'm going to have trouble. Also all the shortcut keys. I'm going to have to print them up. I play multiple games so I'm bound to forget them.
There's not that many shortcut keys to learn for flight - Shift 1-4 for the modes, Shift-Space for joystick/mouse mode, Ctrl-Space to turn independently of forward direction and press again to have the direction move to where you're now pointing, and Shift-X (I think) to match speeds with target. You'll just find yourself hitting Shift 1 to build speed, Shift-3, then R to scan, Shift 1 to go back into travel mode (you don't lose a lot of speed doing it this way), and travelling around like that. Even in speed mode, you can fly past things, hit Ctrl Space, point at them (like a jump gate entrance), and hit Ctrl-Space again, and you'll power slide around and through the gates. It's quite a nice feeling!

I'm late to the fray, but before I saw this my first idea was "launch, use space to ascend" nope.. launched.. went out.. shot a random vehicle in front of me i had clicked on. At least i managed to undock. :p
Well there is an exploit(this knowladge might ruin your gameplay so …) i found it when the game got out and that was not fixed over the years You can easily make any amount of money While staying at one station All you need is a ship with with as many crew as possible The price of crew is different between stations You double any investment between two station on the start Then when you get a builder or any other ship with 220 crew You drain one stations crew to minimum needed for price change at any buy/sell per interaction you get on average 500k The guild 3 has the same exploit That pretty much breakes the game there when you know about it Also You can make money on A.satellites On s/m wafs with m ships And on the rest vith l/xl ships You can do 15-20 per unit on price diference And use squad buy/squad sell Doesnt work with crew And when to large quantities You need to help dwarfs with supplies So it has some sort of limit In reality you get about 9kk per xl ship And 1.5kk per m ship
I assume you know if you leave your ship and go to the Trade thingy and walk out onto the outcrop with the stairs you can watch your ship being built. With SETA obviously that can be speeded up. And I do know this is a few months late. lol
Thought so, but thanks for confirming - haven't done gas mining yet, but apparently it's better than ore (although not sure if it's better than silicon - they bring in 60k a haul!)
Awesome video! I’m on the fence about getting this game; I’ve played elite dangerous and Eve online so I think I’ll be ok? Lol the only thing that really worries me are the controls. I’ve seen a couple streamers rage bc of “how bad the controls are” and then rant about how “shit” the game is. Thoughts?
Fast and easy money: Checkout the Vendor at every station you come by, buy bandages, sedatives and needles, craft first aid kits right next to the vendor, sell the first aid kits to the vendor.
Looks like Egosoft finally hired someone to program a decent UI. The first game was overloaded with options burrowed in a single menu and it got worse until X3. Let's say X:Rebirth never happened, because it had some nice improvements but was a disgrace in any other way. Don't get me started on that UI, it was basically a cut version of x3. That one now looks way better and now with 2.5 the Egosoft banana software is ripe.
Yeah - I believe the white ones are the most expensive, purple least, but I haven't tried manual mining as yet - I may give that a go in future episodes!
i know this is an older video but I simply cannot complete these science missions without being attacked, by multiple pirate ships. I just started, this is my 3rd mission and can't live to finish it. Is this normal? I made it through the anomaly and the system is loaded with red killer ships. If so, it's just not fun at all.
How are the mining ships mining without any mining lasers???? I can't be the only one that noticed there's no mining lasers on the two ships that Grayduster purchased?
@@grayduster I only noticed as I was attempting to setup some miners for myself, and was wondering why I was paying another 80K more for my ships... Edit - I think I worked it out, they are picking up scraps left from other miners - I've just spotted a "pickup container" that was 60 Silicon....
All you need is 7 silicon pickups that are approx 60 units to fill the ships cargo, so yeah I can see the mining ships being out there cleaning up after the other AI miners... Got to keep the asteroid belts clean...
I had the same question. Not 100% sure, but I think that red means mineral resources and purple means gas. That's where miners go when auto-mining. Different colors for minerals and gas make sense because you need different equipment: a drill works on ore and other solid resources, but not on gas. You need different storage types too: bulk/solid for minerals, and liquid (or compressed?) for gas.
Wow this is an old video...and I just bought X4 - Foundations. There are a LOT of keys to remember. I am not sure I'll have the patience to go through a whole new finger vocabulary.
This is going to sound very buggy, but try loading the highest loadout when buying a ship, and removing stuff you don't want, rather than loading lowest and adding items. Apparently it affects rating, but haven't confirmed it yet!
@grayduster Does this tip also works for the mining ships you advised in this tutorial? So that you choose highest loadout and then just remove unwanted items? That you then also get pilot skill 2 instead of 1?
step 1: buy a hotas step 2: shoot every red square until you're the king of dogfights step 3: profit step 4: influence the universe with profit step 5: you win
I'm stuck on a Wharf, I got out of my ship to walk around the station, and went back into the ship and I could not get into the flight chair, the pilot will not move, I've tried ..use and the other commands but I still can't fly my ship, any ideas please?
I had the 1st and 2nd games, the map feel that you are in a goldfish bows, where Elite Dangerous, you have the whole galaxy to fly around in, X4: Foundations still feels the same now its hexagons, the text is tiny and hard to see or read.
hey i bought a plutus miner but its just sitting in the 'under construction' list and nothing is happening... its bought and paid for but not doing anything 'construction-wise' help is appreciated
This is probably a little late, but there is a way. When you set up the ship you want to buy, before you confirm the order, the ship will be on a list on the right side of the screen (27:40 in this vid). You can click the little "+" icon next to the ship to add another. You can build multiple of the same ship in one go this way. This also usually burns through a stations reserves if you're buying half a dozen ships lol.
I am having trouble with my miner. I select an area on the map for it to mine and it goes out and fills its hold, but then it stops and I have to manually make it go sell. How do you get it to sell its load automatically?
@@grayduster I upgraded the loadout to include a trading module like yours. It is working fine now. Not sure if it was the way I ordered it to work, like you suggested, or if having a trading module allowed it to sell. I also put 2 Mining turrets on it and it seems to mine pretty fast. Not sure if it is just me or not though, didn't time it.
Pick up a leak mission (or go into scan mode Shift-2 near stations). You'll see a sparkling effect. Get close and you'll decode it (instead of doing the leak mission) - I think the first one you decode guarantees the Boron voice mission
I simply cannot get past this part of the quest line at all. As soon as I reach the place where you are supposed to deploy satellite and resource probe pirates start appearing out of thin air all over the place and obliterating me and everything else in the sector... There must be something wrong, it's my second play through and I just don't understand why so damn hostile this early in the game.
Freespace / Freespace 2 never had the ability to fly in one direction and point in another. Another thing it didn't have was the ability to move laterally/vertically. Still one of my favourite games though.
Frontier: Elite 2 had it as well. It was such a great addition to the game it actually made sense in a realistic way for space flights. Speed up to desired velocity turn off main engines, then turn ship around and use the main engines to slow down near destination. Saved a little fuel if I remember correctly as well.
btw, there are missions in the game about destroying mines. Now, if you shoot one, they all home on you. If you could only run away... and fire backwards... :D
You can actually do that in this game as well. Shift-Spacebar turns off flight assist and allows you to spin on the axis without changing direction provided you don't apply thrust.
Maybe you have a idear, how the onbuild turrents are working, trying it now for 2hours and getting no results. I found that you can switch the turrent mode with the mouse click in the copit. But no way to activate them, they are every time only grey with the blue icon above.
@@ZEROGOKI1983 even with the crew nothing happents, the tutorial and the dokumentation for this game is trash, in the niced form, look in the steam forum, you can not scroll fast enjoy over the problems.
Are you using the keyboard and mouse or a joystick? I just can't get my hotas x setup right in this game it feels so wonky for me, I need to see someones setup anyone have any links? thanks
I'm using the mouse with joystick mode (shift-space) or left click drag. I'll likely be setting up my HOTAS soon however - I'll talk about that in a video when I do!
Yes, please do. As of right now their default settings for them are not (in my opinion) very good. I spent several hours trying to map the buttons for my X52 and xbox controller and it still sucked. Plus from what I have seen and heard from other videos, I'm not the only one who is having issues. It would be nice if they could make a default hotas/xbox controler setting that was more user friendly for us novice/beginner players.
Are you certain that's not your scan mode taking the leak (which will fail the mission, but get you information, like modules), or is it definitely the repair beam?
you might have upgraded your suit to have a weapon? I first also thought I was damaging stuff instead of repairing and then I saw repair was in slot 3 not 1 where it used to be.

Solid. Which is for Mining/Transporting Ores and Minerals.
And.
Containers. Which is for Transporting Standard Goods.
I assume the Lore behind it would be something like the Technology being so Advanced that you by Default have Maximum Cargo Compression on all Ships and that the Unit can now Fit any Size of Item if you got enough Cargo Room.
But I didnt check on that.
So maybe they also just didnt provide any Lore for it at all :P
Actually you want to help her , your got awesome reward for that , i have done that already :)
I'm late to the fray, but before I saw this my first idea was "launch, use space to ascend" nope.. launched.. went out.. shot a random vehicle in front of me i had clicked on. At least i managed to undock. :p
Watched all your episodes on this. I don’t even own the game 😆
Watched all your episodes on this. I don’t even own the game... yet 😆 - fixed that for you :P
Great video. Very helpful. Thanks.
Well there is an exploit(this knowladge might ruin your gameplay so …)
i found it when the game got out and that was not fixed over the years
You can easily make any amount of money
While staying at one station
All you need is a ship with with as many crew as possible
The price of crew is different between stations
You double any investment between two station on the start
Then when you get a builder or any other ship with 220 crew
You drain one stations crew to minimum needed for price change at any buy/sell
per interaction you get on average 500k
The guild 3 has the same exploit
That pretty much breakes the game there when you know about it
Also
You can make money on A.satellites
On s/m wafs with m ships
And on the rest vith l/xl ships
You can do 15-20 per unit on price diference
And use squad buy/squad sell
Doesnt work with crew
And when to large quantities
You need to help dwarfs with supplies
So it has some sort of limit
In reality you get about 9kk per xl ship
And 1.5kk per m ship
I assume you know if you leave your ship and go to the Trade thingy and walk out onto the outcrop with the stairs you can watch your ship being built. With SETA obviously that can be speeded up. And I do know this is a few months late. lol
Wow, you played I-war?! Damn, I didn't think anyone but me had played that game. You can get Independence War 2 on Steam right now for €5.99 :-)
I had it on.... physical CD :)
Haha! I can't remember what medium I had it on anymore. It may even have been a pirated version :x
Solid storage are asteroid miners. Liquid are gas miners
Thought so, but thanks for confirming - haven't done gas mining yet, but apparently it's better than ore (although not sure if it's better than silicon - they bring in 60k a haul!)
X4 only recognizes only the Intel graphics card. But I am on a GTX 1060. Any clue how to change that?
Good at keeping your examples moving and not wasting too much time on distractions.
Is ClapTrap from Borderlands 2 in this game also :-) The voice I am hearing gives me flashbacks.............
Thoughts?
Fast and easy money:
Checkout the Vendor at every station you come by,
buy bandages, sedatives and needles,
craft first aid kits right next to the vendor,
sell the first aid kits to the vendor.
I think that's in Episode 3!
I can see that this new version of X took some of its UI cues from another, well known space game ;) Which is not a bad thing of course.
And I started in a ship called... Elite.
There are Crystal's on asteroids that sell for a lot of money. I bought 4 medium traders just off of income from crystald.
They mine very well, thanks! :D (I don't know either, they're... 'special')
@@grayduster I only noticed as I was attempting to setup some miners for myself, and was wondering why I was paying another 80K more for my ships...
Edit - I think I worked it out, they are picking up scraps left from other miners - I've just spotted a "pickup container" that was 60 Silicon....
I don't know, they're moving an awful lot of silicon for scraps, but for RP's sake, I will see if I can find mining lasers for them :D
@@grayduster Can you imagine if you're great current passive income is just from scraps??
All you need is 7 silicon pickups that are approx 60 units to fill the ships cargo, so yeah I can see the mining ships being out there cleaning up after the other AI miners...
Got to keep the asteroid belts clean...
Great video, well done
Buy bandages, needles and sedatives. Make first aid kit at crafting bench next to seller, sell them back to him for 10x profit
Dang I need spreadsheet for all these tips! :D
Any idea why, when watching your travel progress on the map, there's a section of purplish hexes being drawn to the side of your ship?
I had the same question. Not 100% sure, but I think that red means mineral resources and purple means gas. That's where miners go when auto-mining. Different colors for minerals and gas make sense because you need different equipment: a drill works on ore and other solid resources, but not on gas. You need different storage types too: bulk/solid for minerals, and liquid (or compressed?) for gas.
You missed a flap and another item on the data vault you opened. Usually it's something about AGI
Ooh, I'll have to take another trip out there :)
In this video you use a menu on the left of your screen. I don't get that menu. What have I messed up?
At the data vault found two areas that had two amounts. first about 380,000 credits and the second the location shown here...
I think the data vaults unlock lore videos you can view in the encyclopedia.
Do those miners continue to work when you're offline for constant passive income?
Wow this is an old video...and I just bought X4 - Foundations. There are a LOT of keys to remember. I am not sure I'll have the patience to go through a whole new finger vocabulary.
excellent tutorial vids thanks
That Boron is the main story mission right?
gray does it matter if you go off to do other missions, while the story mission is running.
I-WAR 2 Play-though would be fun to watch
How did you get new ship with pilot skill 2? All I tried are 1, so no automine option.
@@grayduster Interesting. Definitely sounds like an glitch/exploit, but also worth a try. Thanks!
Have you found the anomaly that teleports you to a Xenon sector right next to a Xenon shipyard?
I managed to get out of there fast.
Oof, no, not yet! I've only been through two - both took me to systems inside the local highway ring
At 36:43 we can see "upkeep" below logbook, does crew members need to be paid regularly?
Not that I've seen yet, and it only cost 2k or so to hire them, so in comparison to the amount they make, any upkeep would be vanishingly small
For resetting Traders can't you just create a storage hub and then that storage Hub can sell to npc's
step 1: buy a hotas
step 2: shoot every red square until you're the king of dogfights
step 3: profit
step 4: influence the universe with profit
step 5: you win
The minimum stock mining ships don't have mining lasers included....how did they mine that ore??
They're really really good. (I don't know either :D)
how do you chop a tree in minecraft without an axe? you punsh it! so do mining ships in x4 :)
Magic!
I wonder if mining ships perform better if they have those mining lasers added? or not?
@@Diarmuhnd can anyone confirm/check?
Where is that Wharf located I can find one to finish my quest
Crystal mining netted me about 10 million for about 30 min of work earlier. Park and watch for the flash. Easy money.
Which system did u get in?
Great tutorial to the game :)
Perhaps the marine is stored in the transporter pattern buffer until he's needed again.
I get that reference! :P
Whenever I set my guy on automine, I cant add more than one ware and I cant even set the distance.
I'm stuck on a Wharf, I got out of my ship to walk around the station, and went back into the ship and I could not get into the flight chair, the pilot will not move, I've tried ..use and the other commands but I still can't fly my ship, any ideas please?
Save often. Load save
I had the 1st and 2nd games, the map feel that you are in a goldfish bows, where Elite Dangerous, you have the whole galaxy to fly around in, X4: Foundations still feels the same now its hexagons, the text is tiny and hard to see or read.
The free expansion comes out on the 31st so the game should feel much bigger
hey i bought a plutus miner but its just sitting in the 'under construction' list and nothing is happening... its bought and paid for but not doing anything 'construction-wise' help is appreciated
Does the station it's on have enough materials to build it? Right click the station, look in information for the goods required
@@grayduster you were right... i guess its just going to take a while huh? thanks for responding i appreciate it
How do you get any crew with star? I always get the no star and the ship can only do the most basic behaviors.
Try creating a ship with the top loadout, then remove stuff that you don't want. Do you get a starred crew then?
Is there no multi-buy system in the game where you can buy multiple ships with a configuration?
This is probably a little late, but there is a way. When you set up the ship you want to buy, before you confirm the order, the ship will be on a list on the right side of the screen (27:40 in this vid). You can click the little "+" icon next to the ship to add another. You can build multiple of the same ship in one go this way. This also usually burns through a stations reserves if you're buying half a dozen ships lol.
Wait, is the scenario here that everyone in this area is cut off from the other factions or is this a frontier of sorts?
I am having trouble with my miner. I select an area on the map for it to mine and it goes out and fills its hold, but then it stops and I have to manually make it go sell. How do you get it to sell its load automatically?
Right click the miner, info, behaviour, change hold position (order) to automine, tell it what to mine, click accept. No need to manually control it
@@grayduster Thanks for the reply. I will try that.
19:15 Begins the conversation about Data Vaults.
Where did he discover the 'voice' mission? I'm craving some kind of direction in the game.
Pick up a leak mission (or go into scan mode Shift-2 near stations). You'll see a sparkling effect. Get close and you'll decode it (instead of doing the leak mission) - I think the first one you decode guarantees the Boron voice mission
@@grayduster yea first one i decoded gave me that
I simply cannot get past this part of the quest line at all. As soon as I reach the place where you are supposed to deploy satellite and resource probe pirates start appearing out of thin air all over the place and obliterating me and everything else in the sector... There must be something wrong, it's my second play through and I just don't understand why so damn hostile this early in the game.
this will be really helpful ty mining swarm.. away!
is X now hotas compatible
Freespace / Freespace 2 never had the ability to fly in one direction and point in another. Another thing it didn't have was the ability to move laterally/vertically. Still one of my favourite games though.
I miss I-War just for that feature :D
Haven't added turrets yet, but I will be doing as part of episode 4 (a new ship) - I'll check them out for you.
I imagine you need crew for turrets
@@ZEROGOKI1983 even with the crew nothing happents, the tutorial and the dokumentation for this game is trash, in the niced form, look in the steam forum, you can not scroll fast enjoy over the problems.
might need to add them to a fire group?
someone told me you need service crew for them but not had chance to try yet
great watch!
The ship is like the Tardis inside.
Independence war 2 is a great game.
i really like this game, i am going to bye it when i get pay!
right now those missions are broken if you try to do them right now by using repair beam you will fail the mission
Are you certain that's not your scan mode taking the leak (which will fail the mission, but get you information, like modules), or is it definitely the repair beam?
@@grayduster the repair beam it breaks the object instead of fixes the object in this current version
Works just fine for me when I'm in my suit.
you might have upgraded your suit to have a weapon? I first also thought I was damaging stuff instead of repairing and then I saw repair was in slot 3 not 1 where it used to be.
Savage foxchild you use your pistol not repair
I found a mission that was about 650,000 for moving supply to a sector and made a profit on selling the
