    The Lexar 1000x is a V60 card - this means that the minimum write speed is 60 MB / s. I use this type card on my G7 4K 30fps, on full time of recording 29" 59'

    I think the catch is V spesification of the sd card which is V60 for the lexar, which means minimum 60 megabyte per second data transfer is guaranteed. As for GH5's 400 mbit (50 megabyte) stream, V60 provides enough speed.
    Not all Lexar 1000x are V60 quality from what I see from pictures of sd cards, thats why everybody has different experiences.
    More expensive sd cards may have higher write/read speeds but they do not necessarily guarantee minimum V60 stream which is necessay for gh5 400 mbit.
    But maybe I'm mistaken :)

    looking at the Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB 95MB/s SDXC I (3) [10] ... if I understand this correctly the 95MB/s is what it can read at NOT write, might be able to write up to 95MB/s but can't necessarily sustain that. To the right of the SDXC is a V30 (again if I got this right) that the V30 means that the card will never WRITE below 30MB/s (That's MegaBytes ppl) and to sustain 4K as Lee points out you need 50MB/s consistently or oh it drops it. I've just spent 2 hours reading about SD cards if you can' tell - lol!

    I have the Lexar 64GB SDXC U II (10) 150MB/s 1000x cards.. Two of them, and have NEVER had an issue with them in the GH5. I also just bought the same brand and type of cards, but the larger 128GB versions, and also have never had any issues w/ them in the GH5. I also format the card in the camera, before I press record on anything, never had an issue.

    I just wanted to make a suggestion. Would you please try the Lexar 1000x again with "C4K, 400M, 422 ALL-I" only change from recording in "MOV" to recording in "MP4 LPCM". I have been having the same problem as you getting to only about 10min before it cuts off will recording in the MOV wrapper, but when I tried switching to MP4 LPCM with no other changes it works every time. I have so far tested this on 2 Lexar 1000x 256GB cards with GH5 on firmware 2.0 and 2.2.

    I think the answer is within IOPS. These controllers can generally handle very few operations per second. While one large file can be written at 100s of MB it doesnt mean that a containered video stream can be updated that fast on the fly.

    UHS is not a rating it is a connector, the GH5 limits its UHS-I connector to 40MB/s. Your UHS-II 2000x card is an SDHC which still writes in 4GB sectors, it needs to be an SDXC. I don't know why your 1000x is only getting 10mins, that means it is dropping below 50MB/s, maybe you got a bad card.
    (Looks like some of the Lexar 2000x/1000x and Delkin V90 UHS-II cards are limited to 40MB/s UHS-I speeds in the GH5.)

    I have 2 of the expensive cards you returned, Extreme Pro 128 GB 300 mb/s and they have no issues with 4K 4:2:2 10 bit All-i 400 mbps recording. I can get 84 minutes of continuous recording no problem. Yes they are very expensive... I bought one card at Henry's in London Ontario for about $450 then I looked on B&H Photo's website and they were charging only $350 Canadian for the exact same card so I got my second one from them. I can not record to both cards at the same time at 400 mb/s, when I try it says "cards must be exactly the same for dual recording"... they are the exact same cards and dual recording works fine for 4K 10 bit 150 mbps video and everything else including FHD All-i 60 fps 200 mbps. I am happy with these cards and I darn well better be for what I paid for them. Anyone interested in buying these cards check out the prices at B&H to compare before you buy. I bought these a year ago so the prices may have changed. Thanks for the upload.

    Those speeds on the packaging and cards, which are "peak" write and read speeds, have nothing to do with what is required for the GH5 400Mbps format which is a minimum "sustained" write speed of 50Mb/s.

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  7 років тому +2

      100% agree with you. They always hide an ** in there in the fine print and you'll see stuff like min speed 30mbs or something. But It still doesnt really answer the why the Lexar 1000x will run for way longer than the 2000x given its x2 the speed. The only thing I can think of is capacity. For some strange reason that 128gb matters.

    Higher-end SD cards have longer SUSTAINED write speeds. This means a 60MB/s can beat a 120MB/s card if the former is designed for longer sustained write speeds. The cameras cache size also plays an important factor into the qaulity and speed of writing to a SD card. Also, camera companies will limit write speeds based on its class so for instance, even though your UHS-I card states it can write 60MB/s the camera will still limit it to lower write speeds. Lastly, Panasonic limits UHS-I card write speeds and this is likely due to setting it based on testing their cameras using the slowest UHS-I card(s) and optimising them to a certian write speed threshold.
    Other camera companies clearly do not care to test cards on any level so they stay within the 100-200mbps (12-25MB/s) write speed barrier to stay on the safe side. The GH5 shoots above its weight class because Panasonic keeps finding new ways to optimize it to go further than it was orginally performing. Efficient and clever coding can go a long ways.

    Try formatting the 1000x card on your PC, using the same file system the camera formats, but DON'T do the quick format. Do a full format. You may be running into a bad sector, causing the camera to abort. If that doesn't help, you might have a problem with your camera.
    Also, did you try recording to the other card slot? Any difference there? Good luck!

    I think Max recommended the Sony M series SD cards for the 400 mbs codec. You can get them in a two pack 128 gigs so I took the plunge because I could return if they didn't work. So I tried it on a local shops GH5 at the 23.98 DCI and recorded the full card. No glitches or drop outs.. But you are right most people will likely not do a continuous record for a full card so under 10 min is likely fine.

They recommend UHS II Sandisk, Samsung, Sony, Delkin, Transcend and Hoodmann. You can not use BlackMagic for anything as speeds are not approaching the use of GH5. Lexar is lying about their speeds. The highest speed measured is read 82mb / s write 52mb / s.

    I haven't had any trouble recording 400 Mbps with the 128 GB Sony M series UHS-II cards. The GH5 breaks the recording up into multiple clips before it hits 96 GB if you record continuously (effectively making the maximum clip length about 34 minutes), but it just starts another clip if you don't stop it, so you can continue recording until the memory card fills at about 42 minutes. You can get a two-pack on B&H for $184 ($92 single) and take advantage of the GH5's dual card slots to relay record, giving yourself 84 minutes of continuous recording. However, I've found that the backup record function doesn't work with these cards in 400 Mbps (I get an error message saying it needs two identical cards, even when I am using two identical cards), but it works just fine at all other bitrates. I have no idea why that happens. Other than that, I've had no problems.
    I've also heard the FreeTail Evoke Pro 1000x they sell on Amazon for $74 will work, but I haven't tried it.

    Long-term Lexar reality check: The Longsys-era Lexar Professional 1000x cards are extremely prone to manufacturing flaws that make them extremely unstable and prone to corruption upon attempting to save footage. Lexar is also refusing to warranty the cards and are issuing refunds - furthermore, they are WITHHOLDING refunds citing investigation by the US Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). I've been waiting well over five months for an RMA card to be refunded. They also claim that they cannot send the RMA'ed card back because of CFIUS, so you're SOL either way.
    Wouldn't touch a Lexar card for all the tea in China. But I probably wouldn't get the tea for a year, thanks to CFIUS.

    From experience, my 128 ExtremePRO 300MB's works flawlessly. Don't do shortcuts when it comes to SD Cards. one failed gig is much more expensive and embarrassing than just having to bite the bullet.

    I realize this video is over a year old now. My story with the Lexar 1000x cards is a bad one. After using them for a while i discovered that on the GH5 these cards were actually corrupting the video files over time. Also, Write speeds are significantly underrated compared to the spec'd rates from some reviewers. I had rates 34 MB and in one case 21MB sustained write rates. Avoid these cards if you care at all about your data. Oh and the LExar 1000x cards only Read at UHS-II. They do not WRITE at UHS-II only UHS-I and the write speed is horrible on the GH5. I've learned this the hard way. Also, Lexar's warranty treats the customers as second class citizens so don't expect any great warranty support for what is labeled a professional product.

    Regarding the 1000X, for 'regular' 4K 60p, ie, not the 400Mbps, will those cards work for that?

  • @ChessBoxin
    @ChessBoxin 7 років тому

    I'd imagine you've only tested these cards but just curious if you knew any SD cards that are 100 percent to work at all times and no errors. I'm doing event videography and I'd hate if my stuff crashed during a wedding. Anything you've read or recommended? Obviously cheaper would be nice but I guess you get what you pay for. I'm leaning towards Sandisk cards but just wanted to hear your thoughts before purchasing.

    I know this is an odd question, but do you think even as a stills shooter that the GH5 with a speed booster would be better than the 6D Mark II? I got rid of my A6500 just because of the frustrating menu system and the crap battery life. I'm not sure if the GH5 would be a better experience.

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  7 років тому

      WarChortle For stills I would still choose a 6Dmkii any day. While I love the gh5 and everything it can do. Nothing beats the look of full frame. Even with a speedbooster you will not have the same low light performance you will get with a full frame camera as well. Unfortunately there is no perfect camera.

      Yann Res That has nothing to do with the card. You have to be recording in Mov. And you need to make sure your firmware is the newest version that just came out (v2.0) in order to shoot at 400mbps

    Just received two new Lexar 64 1000x cards for my brand new as well gh5, I have formatted them via computer and after installing them in the camera .. message error says "insert SD card again" it will not let me format it in the camera, both cards doing the same thing. Then I place the original ultra plus 64 card in and works fine. Any suggestions here
