  • On our menu today is… a menu? We want to show you ways to make design files easy to browse and navigate. Because we share Figma files and prototypes directly, it’s important to think about how the people viewing the file for the first time find their way around. Figma gives us a few good ways to add way-finding to our files but it will take a bit of intentional practice to make it an every day part of your design workflow and habits.

    ABOUT FIGMA BITES
    ===
    Figma Bites is a video series that aims to teach you how to speed up your Figma workflow.
    📺 Who is the Audience? 📺
    Any UX Designer or person using Figma is the perfect audience for this series. These short videos will give you actionable tidbits of information that you can start using in your Figma workflow today.
    👔 Why this format? 👔
    We’re all busy working on making the world better for our users and making changes to our workflow can take us out of that focus. Our hope is that these short videos will be easily digestible when you’ve only got a few minutes to learn something new. The topics will be small enough to learn quickly and add to your workflow without trying to boil the ocean.
    ⏳ When do new videos come out? ⏳
    We’re planning to release a new video every other week on Tuesdays. We can’t promise to hit this 100% of the time but will do our best to go no longer than 1 month between videos if things get busy.

    Good feedback.
    Some tips that my team and I use have proven to work well. We use the Figma Section containers. Then we have a custom project/status bar placed at the top of the sections container over our screens. The cool thing with this project/status bar component is that we can span all frames or place individual ones over certain frames. This helps us communicate if all the frames in this project share the same status or if some are complete and some that we are still working on.
    We also use the Jira widget to place Jira tickets in front of the work (in the section container). This also helps us ensure we have round-trip communication between Jira and Figma, and it ensures that we are not working on projects with missing tickets.
    Two benefits of using the Section containers is that the title can be read regardless of the zoom level on the page, and similar to Frames, we can link directly to a section container.
    A few benefits of our project/status bar component is that it includes avatars of all of our Designers, PMs and Developers so that it is clear who is working on the project. It also includes a start date and a last edit date. This has proven to be super helpful when we have had to return to a project many months later.

      Those are all great ways to add good functionality to a Figma file. Thanks for the comment :)
