In olden days Gurus will not teach thisVarali ragam to any disciple due to some superstitions that by doing so the Guru-sishya relationship will be strained and thus it can be learned only by listening cutcheries.Probably it may be due to its asymmetric nature by the vakra prayoga in ascending scale,which is considered as not good teaching! It is a vakra-sampurna-sampurna ragam (sampurna meaning containing all 7 notes. Since the madhyamam used is slightly higher than the prati madhyamam, and is also called as chyuta panchama madhyamam/ Varali madhyamam ! Many compositions in praise of Lord Ganesha are set to this raga. Bombay Jayasri presented rendition skills with powerful base voice entailing good range but at the same time sings with controlled tone...Thats the professionalism!.Having sung so eloquently with the needed phrased singing in Charanam she should have earmarked for a detailed improvisation @ the concluding line- 'karunyaamrtha paripurani kama krodhadi nivarini kadamba Gaana viharini' ..say The phrased words can be set within their original place in the tala cycle with letter higher level of pace to challenge pakkavadyams!!! . '
This is a majestic rAga with an incredible feeling. Unfortunately, this rendition falls flat in many ways. Listen to this Smt. MLV's rendition (ua-cam.com/video/NOwdb83_Z_g/v-deo.html) or this rendition by Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer (ua-cam.com/video/1ByITxFUHso/v-deo.html). The hallmark of a rendition of varAli is the continuity in expression of the motifs that feels like one continuous thread. To me, this rendition feels chopped up in awkward places. I am a fan of Smt. Jayashri (I have experienced tears flowing down my face listening to many of her songs, one in particular is the "kanden kanden kanden sitayai kanden raaghava" in vasantA). I am saying this so that the groupies don't jump on this comment. She is an outstanding vocalist, richly deserving of all awards and whatnot. My comment is strictly limited to this rendition of this krithi.
