How to REALLY fix a clogged Chlorine Feeder/Chlorinator

  • The short version is my check valve was clogged, and this video shows how I replaced it. The tablets in my Pentair Rainbow 320 automatic chlorine feeder were not melting down at all, and I couldn't find a video here that really specifically covered the issue I was having, so I made this video.
    SAFETY FIRST! You could be working with harmful substances, chemicals, and poisonous gas here, so make sure you are correctly using the right PPE to do this job safely.
    The check valve (and adjacent rubber gasket if needed) are pretty easy to find at most online retailers that sell pool supplies.

    You helped me tremendously! I take care of my husband. I have to do household repairs on my own. I thought I had to get a new chlorinator. Floaters use too many tablets. I ordered the part and thanks to you saved the cost of a new chlorinator. Thank you so much!

    For the last month or more, I have been fighting with my pool. Could not seem to keep it balanced. Noticed the tablets in my stack were lasting longer than usual, but I had just opened a new bucket that I purchased at a club store and not my local penny pincher. Was working on it this morning and when I checked the stack it was still very full. Found your video and it is exactly what my problem was. I popped the float down, cleaned everything up and reassembled it. I will be ordering a new valve and screen. I made it 19 1/2 years on the current setup, so I'm sure it's due. Thank you so much for this video.

    Great video! I bought a Pentair 320 chlorinator on line (used). Of course I expected to replace gaskets and then watched a video that talked about all the parts and how to test them etc. That little check valve....WOW!. I just disassembled the thing and yep, my check valve is so dead. Everything else looked great. Gaskets were new as were the lines, so I'm not sure why he didn't want to do the check valve and call it a day and continue using it. His loss and my gain since I only paid $20.00 for it. I hope he's not reading this post.

      Heh nope, all in range. The point of the chlorinator is to automate/regulate chlorine levels. I have it regulated down to a trickle through the tube. 9 tablets will last 3-4 weeks or longer for my 22,000 pool at 1-2 PPM.

    I'm having a REALLY hard time removing the feeder body. Any suggestion? I already removed the lock screw on the bottom. Lots of white stuff is flaking off onto the ground (presumably calcium) after turning it 360° -- muscles and hands are sore. I already ordered a new 320 system because many parts have broken already during this process of checking the check valve; I have the same symptoms you described. My existing 320 system may have been 15-18 years old. I'm receiving a strap wrench in the mail today but am still not confident I can remove the old body.

    • @WillHennegan
      @WillHennegan  2 роки тому +1

      Yikes! It sounds like you may have a lot of corrosion or buildup, or possibly your pool installer used a PVC adhesive to connect the tube. The way this is designed, there's no easy way to get a solvent in there to loosen stuff up. A strap wrench will either work, or flat-out break the unit, but worth a shot! If you cannot manually unscrew it, you may need to cut the unit out, and plumb in a new one anyway. Good luck!

      @tponce 2 роки тому

      @@WillHennegan Yes, while using a strap wrench the cylinder cracked so I had to buy a new 320for $158 during the worldwide product shortage! The price is now a lot lower. My 320 is still not working though. It's not the check valve because I'm using a brand new one. I'm not getting flow and chlorine tablets are not dissolving.

    • @WillHennegan
      @WillHennegan  2 роки тому +1

      @@tponce Gosh that sucks to hear. If the 320 is filling up when the pump is on, and draining when the pump is off, then there is nothing wrong with it. When you say you are not getting flow, do you mean the column is not filling? The only other problem I could think of is that the unit's diverter tee was installed backwards. Can you verify that? There should be flow direction markings on it. Good luck!

  • @AMWedeking

    Thank you Will for this video. Water won't stay inside the tube while the pump is running. It slowly drains out leaving the tablets without any water to dissolve. I cleaned the screen. Any other suggestions?

    • @WillHennegan
      @WillHennegan  3 роки тому

      If water won't stay in the tube, it likely means it is slowly draining out of your pumps/filter too and you have a system leak somewhere. When everything is running, look for water drips/leaks. Hopefully it's just something simple like a poorly seated or broken gasket seal on the chlorinator. You may have to bring in a professional to track down the culprit. Please post an update here when you figure it out. Good luck!

    Mine is dry all the time, the feeder is at the bottom plug and the water gets maybe a few CM from that and the tabs last forever! BUT if I take the top off the chlorinator fills instantly. Is my valve dumping the water as soon as it comes in or is the valve stuck open? And when I pop the top it closes the valve?

    • @WillHennegan
      @WillHennegan  2 роки тому

      Start your pump system then leave the cap off the chlorinator until it's full, then close it. Since it's a sealed system, the air won't escape unless you let it.

    • @WillHennegan
      @WillHennegan  4 роки тому

      If you have the chlorinator removed and fill it with water, does it drain from the bottom check valve immediately? If not, your new check valve is bad. If it does, then your chlorinator is probably fine and there's a plumbing issue downstream.

    • @WillHennegan
      @WillHennegan  5 років тому +2

      Hi Miguel, if your chlorinator is not draining when the pump is turned off, your check valve is likely clogged (the exact problem I had in this video). I would recommend going through the same replacement procedure I did. You could address your leak at the same time by replacing any old/worn thread tape on connections, and make sure all gaskets are in-place.

    • @cleon169
      @cleon169 5 років тому +3

      If your equipment is below the level of the pool, this is normal, as you are likely closing the return valves to open the chlorinator so that the pool water isn't backflowing. Per the Rainbow manual, you will need to install a drain at the bottom of the chlorinator. This is common when the pool is built on a sloped site and the equipment is on the lower side of a retaining wall.
