Each house of congress needs to pass a bill by simple 50%+1 majority. If the president vetos a bill it must then pass by 2/3rds majority to override the veto. This is rare since a 2/3 majority by a party is rare, and is even rarer for a 2/3 majority to be a party that isn’t the presidents.
Remember, a President can only serve 2 terms, a maximum of 8 years as President according to the Constitution of The United States Of America. We have no Kings. The President of The United States is Not a King. We The People!
The Constitution did NOT set Term Limits for ANY Elected positions originally. The Constitution was amended on February 27, 1951 (22nd Amendment) to limit Presidents to two terms in Office. Furthermore, a POTUS can be in office for 10 years total, but, that only happens when the Vice President becomes POTUS due to the Death/Removal of the sitting POTUS - then former VP runs for POTUS and wins two terms = 2 1/2 terms or 10 years total. Should the POTUS die during the first year of their Term, the VP will have had 3+ years as POTUS which is close to be POTUS for a full term, so they could only be Elected to one term in office.
Regarding PoTus sending troops without Congressional approval, he's limited as to how long. Once that time is up, Congress can choose to continue the engagement by funding or end it by ending the funding of that war.
Here in California, we studied the Constitution in 8th grade (when we were 13), again at some point in high school (between ages 14 and 18) and a third time in the first couple of years of college. All that to say... if my memory has not failed me, there's a twist to the term limitations if a president dies in office, resigns, or is impeached. Yes, the sitting vice president takes over and serves as president for the rest of the now-former president's term in office. The former VP can then run for office, but if he (or she) serves for more than half of the previous president's original term, they cannot run for more than one term of their own. When JFK was killed in 1963, Lyndon Johnson took over and served the last 10 months of JFK's term. Johnson ran for reelection in 1964 and won. In early 1968 he announced that he did not choose to run for another term. It was also mentioned that no impeached president has ever been convicted. True... but at least a couple of presidents were left off the list. Andrew Johnson (who succeeded Abraham Lincoln) was impeached in 1868 but not convicted. He had the distinction of being the only former president to serve in the US Senate after he had been president. The other president left off the impeachment list was Bill Clinton, who was impeached for committing perjury (not for having an affair with a much younger woman). He was not convicted.
In regards to #14, The Football was famously out of reach on at least one occasion when President Obama decided to depart an event but didn't wait for the person who is the custodian of The Football to get into their car in the motorcade. According to the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Hugh Shelton, Clinton mislaid his laminated code card, nicknamed the “Biscuit,” for several months in 2000. “This is a big deal, a gargantuan deal,” the general complained in his 2010 autobiography, Without Hesitation: The Odyssey of an American Warrior.
The first incident that comes to mind regarding impeachment is when Richard Nixon was impeached and Gerald Ford (the VP) became president for the remainder of the term.
To override a presidential veto requires a super majortiy of congress. Presidents can veto directly by signed document or simply refuse to sign a bill within 10 days causing it to lapse. The latter is a called a pocket veto.
Regarding the pardon. Our system likes to have checks on government power. So a court may convict but if the executive thinks the court got it wrong they're free to pardon.
Some things that won’t be on that list, a president can fall up a flight of stairs, a president can make a bag of white powder vanish into thin air, a president, can set other countries on the road to total failure with a twinkling of his eye. Better days ahead.
Veto. Congress can pass a bill with a simple majority, 51%. If the President vetos the bill, the Congress needs a 2/3 majority to override the veto. Congress meaning both the House of Representatives and Senate.

BTW, I voted for Trump and am still waiting to hear on my application for the job as Ambassador to Italy...it looks like such a fun place.
It requires a higher percentage of yes votes for congress to override a Presidential Veto, ie an overwhelming majority vs a simple majority for a bill that the president signs.
Remember Impeach meant means charged not convicted. The president you're thinking about is Nixon as he was impeached but resigned as he would've been convicted. VP Gerald Ford took his place
There were nine times that the Vice President became President outside of an election. Those VP’s were John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Jackson, Chester Arthur, Teddy Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson, and Gerald Ford.
Andrew Jackson never served as VP, he was elected twice. John Tyler was the first VP to become president in 1840 after William Henry Harrison died 30 days into his first term, he was also the first president to die in office. Andrew Johnson was the VP that became president after Lincoln was assassinated, and the first president to have a impeachment trial and was the closest to being convicted and removed from office (saved by one vote).
There is a limit on POTUS powers on FEMA. The U.S. was created under a contract. Prior to us becoming the United States, America was colonies. Each State ran autonomously, with their own laws, flag, effect Presidents of their States, their own State's religions, & currency, limited borders, etc. In other words, similar to Europe without the high restrictions on travel between colonies. Also, France, England, the Dutch & others staked territories as belonging to their countries. After the war of independence, the various entities had to agree to unify under 1 national flag. The US was stitched together under agreement, the Constitution but they wanted some rules not governed by the Federal gov't. One of those agreements is that a Predident must request permission by the Governor if the Federal gov't can help. If the governor refuses but the President does it anyway, that's considered an invasion. Bush was blamed for slow response for helping Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina. The slow response was due to the Louisiana refusing to accept help because Bush was Republican and the Gov. was a Democrat. The major city affected from the hurricane was New Orleans. The Mayor in that city ignord warnings and advanced help. The govornor & New Orleans Mayor were voted out based on the number of avoidable deaths. That Mayor went to prison for money laundering, bribery, & wire fraud in relation to city workers & was sentenced to 10 years & released earlier this year.
Didn't know that, but a few things make sense now. I've heard the president must also get permission to activate that states national guard. Is that true? Sorry, I'm Canadian, so although i might know a lot of things about the US, obviously i don't learn all the things you eould.
Regarding Presidential Pardons, Some are very definitely for people convicted of serious crimes, but some are to address or correct an injustice that may have occurred many years ago. As a British example: I once read that Robin Hood was given an official Pardon a few decades ago. In the movies of course A Presidential Pardon (State Governor's can also issue Pardons) is almost always at the last minute just before execution. That almost never happens. Either the Pardon was given earlier, or not given at all.
Forget about the House, right now it is all about appointing federal judges, and possibly assigning new judges to the Supreme Court in order to keep it under control of Republicans/Conservatives...that is why elections matter & having control of the Senate is so important
Presidents earn a living in many ways outside of a retirement income. They give speeches in the US & around the world. Bill Clinton charged $500,000 plus accomodations for a 1 hr speech. Large corporations are very common.
The State of the Union message is similar in principle to the King's Speech at the opening of the new session of Parliament.Tthe President details what progress or lack thereof has transpired since the last address, and exhorts Congress to pass bills he likes. It used simply to be a written address sent by the President, which it was at the discretion of the Senate and House to read aloud or not by the clerk or some other person. It became the big production we see today during Woodrow Wilson's terms in office.
To pass a bill in Congress, it has to get majority of votes in both U.S. House & in U.S. Senate & is then sent to president to sign. If he vetoes the bill, it goes back to either House or Senate (depending on who initiated bill) & they have to have 2/3 votes to override. For example, if bill was initiated in Senate which has 100 members (2 from each state), it only takes 51 votes to pass which is "simple" majority. But if bill is vetoed, they would need 67 votes to override veto which is hard number of votes to get because about half are democrats & half are republicans & it is hard to convince other side to switch their vote. (U.S. House has 435 members so they would need 290 votes to override veto.)
To override a veto takes a super majority. For example in each chamber it only takes a simple majority to pass a bill. In the Senate it takes 51 out of 100 votes to pass a bill. It takes 67 votes however to override a veto. In the House it takes 218 votes to pass a bill (if every representative votes) but it takes 292 to override the veto. Both the Senate and the House have to agree on the override so it is next to impossible. Also as a point, for a bill to become law, the Senate and the House have to agree on the same bill word for word. What will likely happen when a bill becomes law is that the Senate and the House will make amendments. For example if the Senate passes a bill and sends it to the House, the House might vote to pass the bill also…. but with minor changes or amendments. If that happens they have to get together and decide between them which version of the bill they will accept, if any. If they both agree on the final version, then they have to take another vote in each chamber and if they both still agree, it is sent to the president for his signature of approval or veto. Again, the chances of overriding a veto is virtually impossible.
Also, Trump had 26 his term Obama had 1700 and the president before Clinton had around 500. I’m rounding up on that last one. This is inaccurate on that one point also Obama was nicknamed the DePorter in chief with over 4 million, but it was done very quietly.
Congress appropriates a budget for disaster relief every year, but the President (and state governors) decide where it gets spent by declaring certain locations disaster areas after earthquakes, hurricanes, droughts, floods, blizzards, etc.
A bill can be passed with a simple majority. Overriding a veto requires a "supermajority" (2/3). While Congress might have the votes to pass the bill they may not have the votes to override a veto.
veto power is playing politics also. a threaten to veto could "adjust" the provisions of the proposed bill. a real veto could mean "f off" or "you need to do more" and then congress can choose to get to work as the president is threatening or after he's veto'd the bill, depending on what he wants, he will have his team lobby congress members individually and agree to some quid pro quos to get things done. this is how everything is done in washington, basically. "you scratch mine, i'll scratch yours...."
The two term limit for the president is a rather recent amendment to the Constitution, having been ratified only in the 1950s. Prior to that, most presidents followed the precedent (see what I did there?) of our first president, George Washington, and chose to serve only two terms. After Franklin Roosevelt was elected for four consecutive terms, Congress went to work and proposed an amendment to the Constitution. Such an amendment is very difficult to pass, but it was eventually ratified by 75% of the states.
Go back to the one where he is his party's leader, so unlikely his party would vote to override his veto. Without both parties voting to override there has very seldom been the numbers for the other party to do it on their own.
The video you are watching did a bad job of explaining the veto. A bill needs to receive a simple majority or 1/2 of the votes to pass in congress, but the bill would need to receive 2/3 of the vote to override the veto. However, 2/3 is usually hard to get, because the president's party almost always controls significantly more than 1/3 of the votes. As an example, Biden's party now controls close to 1/2 of the votes in House of Representatives, and Trump will control slightly more than half.
Remember, our US constitution is our guidance for running our government USA. That's WHY people/citizens need to interact with their congressmen and congresswomen.

@JWOOD31 You would love for Putin to take over Ukraine. The only problem is that Putin won't stop at Ukraine. But you don't care because Trump loves Putin.
Gerald Ford took over as President when Nixon resigned. He is the ONLY person to serve as president without having been elected as President or Vice President. Ford was selected as VP by Nixon when VP Spiro Agnew himself resigned due to a conviction of tax evasion.
The majority of Congress passes a bill. That means 51 in the Senate and 218 in the House of Representatives have to vote yes. But if the President vetoes it then 3/4 of the people must vote yes.
President makes more money on things like giving speeches, writing books than their salary. The cost of campaigning is far more than the President's salary. $400,000 per year plus $50,000 in expenses. They also get a pension after they complete their term or terms. Said pension is $226,330 as of 2022. Congress decides what the President's salary is but Congress may not alter his or her pay during his or her term. If they passed a law to raise or lower it, it wouldn't take effect until after the next Presidential election. If they choose to raise their own pay, it doesn't take effect until after the next election. 14:18 You're right. Was Nixon, it was the Watergate scandal. Senator Barry Goldwater, told Nixon that the votes were there in the Senate to remove him. It takes a simple majority in the House to impeach, and a 2/3 majority in the Senate for removal. The Senate can also disqualify anyone they remove from office. Nixon resigned before the House vote.
Impeachment is like bringing charges and must be voted on by the house. If the votes are over 59% of reps then it is referred to the Senate that holds the trial
The vice president has actually had to take over for the president 9 times- 8 times after the president died and once after President Nixon resigned due to the watergate scandal
Pardons completely clear the person of a crime as if he was never convicted. Pardons are… Often issued at the end of a president’s term in office where he can’t be harmed by political backlash. If he isn’t running for office anymore, he probably may not care what we think. Pardons might sometimes be used to clear a person’s name who has long been deceased. He might pardon a person to restore his rights such as to possess a firearm or vote. Like a 55-year-old person might’ve been convicted for a nonviolent crime when he was 18 years old, got out of prison st 20 and been clean ever since. Not a pardon but a president can commute a sentence or reduce the sentence without an actual pardon. So if a 20 year-old person got caught in a nonviolent crime and was sentenced to 30 years, a president could reduce that later to time served thinking that for nonviolent crime the sentence was excessive. I think Trump commuted few people to give them another chance at life after a minor drug conviction many years ago.
But Trump refused to divest his assets as EVERY president is required to do before taking office, since after Nixon. He also ignored constitutional bans against taking foreign money or other emoluments, AND insisted on having Secret Service, military personnel, etc., pay to stay at his resorts, here and overseas, as even Pence admitted. Trump also refused IRS audits, which are required of presidents every year. The head of IRS quit immediately when Trump left.
The president's power to adjourn Congress is limited to cases where the two houses are in disagreement over how long to adjourn. If that has ever actually happened, the last time must have been close to two hundred years ago. When Congress passes a bill, by majority vote of both houses, it goes to the President for his signature. If he signs it, it becomes law. If he doesn't, then it doesn't become law. That is called vetoing the bill, although that word is not actually in the Constitution. Congress can override a presidential veto, but only by a two thirds majority vote in both houses. A number of presidents have died in office, most famously Abraham Lincoln And John F. Kennedy. Richard Nixon resigned when faced with the certainty of being impeached and removed from office. The Constitution does explicitly say that anyone not eligible to be President is ineligible to be Vice President, thus anyone who has already served two terms as President could not be elected Vice President.
I hope you understand that our Constitutional system has many checks and balances. No one has absolute power, and that was the intent of our founding fathers. We will not have a dictator. We will not have a king. We will not have a despot. Based on that, you have nothing to fear from our president elect.

Congress is usually within 45/55% one party.
Overriding veto takes 66%.

Most do.
The first incident that comes to mind regarding impeachment is when Richard Nixon was impeached and Gerald Ford (the VP) became president for the remainder of the term.
Unfortunately president's of both parties have done pardons for political purposes and not because it's good for the country
To override a presidential veto requires a super majortiy of congress. Presidents can veto directly by signed document or simply refuse to sign a bill within 10 days causing it to lapse. The latter is a called a pocket veto.
Gerald Ford became vice president when Spiro Agnew resigned and then became president when Richard Nixon resigned.
Obama's parties were every Wednesday night and Beyonce & Jay Z were almost continuing favorites. This was extremely costly. Bush might have had the most vacations, but Obama had the costliest. 6:48 Lincoln didn't try to suspend habeas corpus during our Civil War, he did suspend it. 9:03 The funny thing about living in the White House is that the President has to pay for his own groceries unless there's a formal state dinner or something like a lunch with the British PM.
Nixon resigned BEFORE he was impeached.
Jimmy Carter did a mass pardon of all the draft dodgers.

A veto is threatened to get changes usually
If the president vetos a bill, it takes a super majority in congress to override the veto, not just a majority. This is more difficult to achieve.
Obama has referenced GoT in at least one of his speeches.
One cheap shot at the Beesleys. Who holds veto power in Beesleyland? My money is on Millie.
Forget about the House, right now it is all about appointing federal judges, and possibly assigning new judges to the Supreme Court in order to keep it under control of Republicans/Conservatives...that is why elections matter & having control of the Senate is so important
need a 2/3rd majority in the house to override a president's veto
Congress can override a veto by more than simple majority. I can't remember if it is 60% or 66%. But it is more than 50% .

@ lol…
One of the most powerful. Lol. We are. But we believe in fair to all.
The power of pardon is not to be taken lightly

Make America Great Again MAGA❤
veto power is playing politics also. a threaten to veto could "adjust" the provisions of the proposed bill. a real veto could mean "f off" or "you need to do more" and then congress can choose to get to work
as the president is threatening or after he's veto'd the bill, depending on what he wants, he will have his team lobby congress members individually and agree to some quid pro quos to get things done. this is how everything is done in washington, basically.
Congress can override a presidential veto. However it requires 3/4 of congress to override which can rarely happen.
I think it’s a “super majority” meaning 66 senators.
@@juliamartin4141 You are correct. I was thinking of approving a constitutional amendment and number of states
.

The majority of Congress passes a bill. That means 51 in the Senate and 218 in the House of Representatives have to vote yes. But if the President vetoes it then 3/4 of the people must vote yes.
You need 60 votes in the Senate due to the filibuster.
@ if they filibuster but 66 to overturn a veto. It’s 2/3 not 3/4 my mistake
Pardons completely clear the person of a crime as if he was never convicted.
Pardons are…
Often issued at the end of a president’s term in office where he can’t be harmed by political backlash.
There is one president who turned down his salary and donated it. That would be Donald Trump.
And racked in millions of dollars by having government and foreign officials stay at his properties. But I digress.
So did JFK. JFK and Trump are among my favorites.
Actually no. The State of the Union has no fixed schedule. He gives it whenever he damned well feels like it.
