- In the chill of winter, when most tourists have migrated, you'll find professional and amateur shellfishers alike uncovering oysters from the waters of Cape Cod Bay. Correspondent Seth Doane returns home to Massachusetts, where his father, Paul, an 11th-generation Cape Codder, harvests oysters by the bucket in the town of Wellfleet, to be shared with friends and family during the holiday season.

Our family has had a home in Cape Cod for over half a century and oysters are one of our favorite foods! Truly a delicacy to be enjoyed through generations with our loved ones. Love the story, Seth!

I lived in key West and watched many eat oysters I just never could stomach a raw one ! Now I love some New England chowder!!

Nice to see our Ribb Turtle-back scratch rake out there, being put to good use! I remember being cajoled by one of our dear Delaware customers to go into production of these super efficient tools, based on a design he sent us. I have no idea how many turtles we've made since then, but I do know it delights us to no end to see people out there, gathering their catch, for work or play. Such a special community - we never tire of the stories. Thank you.

Shell fishing on Cape Cod is therapeutic in any season, winter is actually fun even in the cold. Barnstable has some of the best also offers areas on the north side and the south side and the flavors are different.
Wellfleet oysters are the best!

I finally got my wife to try oysters and first she had were Wellfleet oysters right in town At the Wicked Oyster. She loved them. This past summer I was in Marco Island FL and eating at a place called The Oyster Society. On the raw bar menu were Wellfleet Oysters. I smiled.....

My summer cottage is about a 1/4 mile from this was taped, my neighbor has one of those 900 with shellfish permit and she shares them with us.

I love oysters! Oysters stew has been a Christmas Eve tradition for our family for many many years too. But I cannot do raw oysters, not sure why.
I lived in Cape cod in 2007 for a year I wished I would have known about the oysters in Wellfleet

I remember clamming on Cape Cod and Marblehead as a kid. Don’t recall oysters though.
People on and around the Chesapeake, Rappahanock River in VA may have an argument. (Although mostly known for Blue Crab). We pluck them out of the (brackish) estuaries off the Rivah. Big Daddy lives on Big and Little Oyster Creek that lead out to the Bay. Always Oysters to be had and decades of memories!
I am pretty lucky to live here. It's just hard to say when a Nor'easter is due tomorrow. 😉

Last of the hunters and gatherers! Like the video stated, later (today) came the farming. One of my great small pleasures in life, raw oysters and raw clams, with a side of beer.

My favorite is oyster po-boys. Fried oysters on french bread with lettuce and tomato. We had a guy on our boat that would tie a string around the oyster, swallow it and pull it back up. Met lots of characters in Louisiana working the boats. Now they are farming the oysters, which is cool, but nothing like gathering a bunch for free.
I can eat sushi, but not raw shellfish for some odd reason. Spent Christmas in Newport, RI, and enjoyed some fried oysters there - love them more than lobstah!
I’d like to experience clamming a couple of times at least living in Chicago makes this impossible( unless I can find where the tiny wild mussels seem to grow around here in Lake Michigan). I like mine like a lot of the men in the family enjoy them, raw with lemon and hot sauce. The ladies in the family prefer them baked with Parmesan and bread crumbs, along with the mentioned lemon and hot sauce. Such a primal food that is also cultural… and handsomely delicious.
A tip for anyone trying to open, a clam knife isn’t the best knife to open them, they are almost to sharp and if one slips, there goes a finger. A particularly slender butter knife and the right angle with suffice.
I'm glad I learned to eat raw oysters. I would have missed out on one of nature's most luscious foods.
Must be the source of all the roads named Doane from mid to outer Cape.
Doane was one of the original familys to settle on cape cod in the 1600s. So the name is everywhere.
Gulf oysters are the best.

Raw oysters have always triggered my gag reflex from the slimy texture. Do they take on a more chewy clam or mussel texture when they are cooked?
I only like them cooked onions and garlic over a hot bed of white rice.

Grill 'em. Chew 'em. Swallow 'em. There's a reason you have teeth. And saliva. Don't expect your stomach acids to do everything. However, as you might have read on the liner of a Tom Waits album, along with a plethora of odd facts, (Orphans) raw oysters are soothing for your throat. Probably just the salt.

Never seen a shore in California like this one.
First of all your inclusion of California is simply a total error, and to the others, it's unquestionable and rarely disputed that New England/Atlantic Canada are the best oysters in the world, not south of New York, and CERTAINLY not from the gulf. I was in Chile last winter and had the freshed Pacific oysters that look just like our Massachusettsian Wellfleets, and they were DISGUSTING, nothing like New England tasting.
