Tom, what brilliant proof you deliver that the pianobox is just as great for Irish music as the button box! I love your style. It reminds me of the great Joe Derrane. Grts from Holland.
Well done! I got an accordion from my school for free and have started to learn how to play it myself. It needed a bit of work and there was someone that could fix it relatively close, so once it's done, I'll continue learning.
Hi! Great playing, thanks a lot for sharing your music. I'm a piano accordion player too, sometimes I have problem to figure out a handy fingering technique for the right handen, especially by reels like these. Can you give me some advice about that? Thanks and good luck.
Hi, Tom! You're a great player. We at Zeke & The Kiddos in the US are looking for somebody to record the accordion parts for an original Irish song in our production. The arrangement is already written. Dare you become a session musician? Let us know! Thanks so much in advance.
Hi guys, thanks for your message! I’m no stranger to the recording studio so would be happy to have a listen and see if I can contribute what you’re looking for. Thanks, Tom
I'm amazed at how your right hand does this staccato thing sounding so much like a diatonic accordeon... Would you have any advice to give to help me with that?
Hi Helena, it’s a good question because it’s not really something I intentionally do when learning a new tune. I guess it’s more a result of trying to keep the sound lively and I think the Staccato technique makes the tune sound quicker than it actually is, which is quite handy for jigs and reels. Having said that, I always like a mix between staccato and legato because you can really vary a tune and keep it interesting. Particularly important in Irish music I think as it’s common to play the tune maybe 3 times through. Having a dry sounding instrument like mine helps as the notes are sharper so the sounds blend less and bellow use can also enhance the staccato feel. Other than that, all I’d say about my technique is that I try to keep my hand close to the keyboard and flat so I can ‘bounce’ my fingers off the keys instead of rolling from one to another. Hope that helps! Tom
How much more difficult is this to do compared to a diatonic accordion? I have heard that Irish music is easier on a diatonic, at least if you're playing it fast at proper tempo.
I can’t tell you to be honest, as I’m not much past a basic tune on a diatonic. Certainly 1 less thing to think about with a piano / chromatic accordion!
@Mikeness thesession.org/tunes/64 Here's the sheet music for the tune part, this website is great for looking up different tunes you might want the sheet music for. There's no chords unfortunately.
Wish I could play like that
One of the best versions I've heard.
Thanks John, that’s much appreciated.
Tom

@@TomWillisAccordion best answer ever!!! Thanks for all the tips! I'll try your advices in practice and will keep on hoping for more of your videos!
Can you share a tutorial video showing the right hand and left hand please!
I don’t rate myself as a very good teacher but I can have a go!

Yooo I totally wanna learn this. Do you happen to have any sheet music for this piece?
No I don’t unfortunately as I don’t use sheet music. It’s a very common tune though so I’m sure it would be easy to find online.
@@TomWillisAccordion Yeah, the problem is that I can't find any sheet music for left hand which is unfortunate.
@Mikeness thesession.org/tunes/64 Here's the sheet music for the tune part, this website is great for looking up different tunes you might want the sheet music for. There's no chords unfortunately.
Did you tune it with 30 cents?
No, only 8 👍
Where can I get the chords for this ?
Hi Adam, best bet I would say is tune.org. It’s a common trad tune so should be on there.
Your left hand technique is simply awful.
Thank you 😂 the trials and tribulations of the self-taught!
Slapping dat base line like a boss. Damn, this looks difficult without looking. When have you started playing this amazing instrument?
Thank you! I’ve been playing about 23 years so far…
