2019 Chevy Equinox Review // A lot of tech in a compact SUV

  • The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact 5-passenger utility vehicle, sold with a 1.5L 4-cylinder, a 2.0L 4-cylinder or 1.6l 4-cylinder diesel. This size of compact SUV is the most popular in terms of sales but a lot of buyers overlook the GM products in favour of import brands but this Equinox offers a lot of easy to use tech that shames many premium brands.

The Equinox 1.5t awd costs about US$7,000 less than a CR-V 1.5t awd. Such a good value!

It's a nice car with lots of tech but the 1.6 turbodiesel is pretty unique in the segment and if you do frequent highway commutes it is a top pick.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the plastic GM uses for dashboards and side panels, it's totaly fine. Easy to clean, durable, lighter and cheaper. I do not understand why people get overly excited about USB ports and LED headlights. These things do not excite me at all.

Mike, please add MPG graphics when you talk about fuel consumption. Also graphics for horsepower and torque would be helpful too. Otherwise, great review.

Nice spec. The best look available on the current Equinox.. Looks really sharp, I am liking it! I have a 17' Malibu and i'm in love with GM's suite of tech and the comfort and quietness that they offer. I've been considering stepping up to the Equinox but i'd pretty much have to order one to get it looking like your tester. I'm definitely considering it given how good the Malibu is on the same chassis.

GM will never learn that cheaping out on such obvious things as surrounding occupants in a sea of hard plastic, fake chrome, scrimping on safety features (automatically engaging all-wheel drive) and unforgivable fit and finish issues, reminds consumers of the GM from before the U.S. taxpayers bailed them out... A reliability nightmare wrapped in a pretty package. I'll pass GM. Thanks for your informative review and reminding me of how I was, but never will be again, suckered into purchasing a GM product.

You wont ever pay MSRP with Chevys or any GM. Go to a dealer website and see any month, there's DEEP discounts on Equinox. I think they should just lower their MSRP but for some reason they like people to think they are getting a deal perhaps.

    • @robinsd4

@@robinsd4 agree. What GM should do is be right in line with their competitors' pricing and give the vehicle some better features like better cloth seats at least. The denim looking material they are using this year is so ugly.

It's a very nice driving vehicle and has lots of great features.. I'm considering one, but only with huge price reduction in any offer I do, cause it's overpriced and due to depreciation values... or I'll walk... I believe the awd, after you switch it on, is on demand type, but just is not on automatically.. I don't like this either, but since only need it on bad weather days, I can be aware to turn it on when starting the car in bad weather situation. or turn it on if starts to rain/snow... if it helps with fuel economy to be off normally ? I am spoiled with a Santa fe with it's pretty good awd system w/locking centre diff... would buy another Santa fe, but it's fuel ecomoy in it's under powered 2.0L is worse than my 2011 6cyl awd santa fe.. so it's off the table due to bad fuel rating and slower power accel. scores..

  • @zer02her03

My biggest problem with this vehicle is that it has plenty of safety options available but very little comes standard. If you want the options that come standard on a CRV EX you will probably pay close to 10,000 more for those options on an Equinox. They package all the cool things that come standard on the CRV EX in separate option packages that cost thousands extra. Pretty sad. If they really want to compete they need to make more of these optional features standard.

The auto light is placed too low, every time I exit the vehicle my knees hit the knob & the light stays on & I have to put it back on auto...I’m 6’1.
This vehicle is also not good on gas at all in the 2.0T...Overall as a new vehicle it’s “OK”...Long term I would never even consider it.Its an insurance rental.

Good solid review of a good solid car. How would you compare it to a similar year and trim level Jeep Cherokee ? Noting in particular, cost, MPG, performance, interior look and feel .... and very important relative cabin sound level. Side question, how do you feel about buying used rental cars? Purchased a chevy Equinox in February 2019. It has 1,144 miles on it. Died in the middle of traffic over Memorial Day weekend. Engine/Transmission malfunction. Dealership duct taped the broken part which is on indefinite backorder. They refused me a loaner and sent me on my way. Still not functional nor safe. At second shop. It’s a known problem with no fix in sight. Still no resolution........ 1,144 miles. Brand. New. Car.

I own a ‘few’ cars. But I rent a lot of cars (recently 1,500km on a QX60). This fits into that category of car.... an interesting rental. A great week/weekend affair car; but by the end of the week, you don’t have to marry her.... just drop off the keys. My advice... stick to renting this one. It was another great review Mike. Keep it up. Thanks for the video.

If you are comparing one issue over a sinking ship company, best you think twice. How many GM issues would you like to discuss Bud? Countless to name right? Let me start with one. An ignition that cuts out and locks up steering and trust me it happens alot even on newer models. So let's end the debate right here.
