    As a child of Haitian descent, I can recall my Elders, particularly my grandmother, not just pouring libation, but actually sprinkling "fresh water" at the front entrance doorway and around the backyard. When I questioned her about it, she replied with the following in Haitian-Creole: "se pou ou toujou salye la nature avek zancet yo." Always salute Mother Nature and the Ancestors.... Ayibobo!

    I definitely grew up pouring out liquor for "the homies" and turning down the radio when driving past a cemetery so we won't wake the dead.

      Same I remember always begging bio mom to turn radio down late at night when we went on certain road leading to wisdom woods circle in Peachtree city ga . Turns out according to the show the hunting of.. (Margaret Cho episode) she rented I house back in the trees . well the road was part of trail of tears. I felt she was being rude and tried to turn it down or I'd get uncomfortable till off the road. I have Andean in me turns out .so maybe I was connected in that since idk

    In Jamaica, when something you're eating or drinking spills, older folk used to say it's because the spirits wanted some. I wonder if I should pour a libation when that happens to me now. 🤔

    There's a reason why alcohol is traditionally called "spirits"

  • @LadyCoyKoi
    @LadyCoyKoi 3 роки тому +23

    This gives a whole new meaning to the traditional practice of poring the first shot onto the ground and saying the phrase, "To my homies." I always found that common practice among gang members very spiritually connected and respectful, while amusing too. Though I am a child of Elegua and we tend to find humor in almost everything.
    I also recall having to lower my head when I go to cemeteries as a child. I always felt crowded at them. Family members always found it odd how I tend to avoid cemeteries whenever possible now as an adult, because as a sensitive, spirit always love to latch onto me and wanting to communicate with me. It gets very overwhelming for me at cemeteries. My mother is the only one who understands why. She told me that I had a gift with connecting and talking with spirits or forces that others do not see, as well as always being a child that is so connected with forces that others overlook. I'm relearning how to control those sensations as I am entering a new path at life, going to be an embalmer and I will have to face those forces head on. I use to fear them, but as I am reconnecting to how they can help me, I'm less fearful. Life is such an interesting complex thing that it transcends into death as well. I think that is why I love the African traditions and practices, they acknowledge everything around us and fear nothing.

    I love all the positive ways to include our loved ones who have passed in our lives. I was told not to practice different faiths without dedicating my time and energy in learning how to honor these different dieties because I could bring negative to myself because it is disrespectful to ask for help from many God's/Dieties without knowing them. Therefore, I am sticking to learning to love myself and only pray to God of Love. Later, I will choose a specific faith to learn more.

    I hear that liquor represents the fire element and the stronger the liquor is, the better for your ancestors. Ppl can use the corresponding liquors depending on their culture, but a liquor that you can light on fire like grain alcohol is best.

Another movie that displayed outright “libations” was “Cooley High, 1975.” Remember, when Cochise and all the other Cats celebrated him getting a scholarship in the alley. He said, “And this is for the Bruthas who ain’t here.” I’m certain there’s many more movies that show this ritual of veneration to Ancestors and friends who have passed on to another realm-ASÉ
