Having written both drama and comedy for broadcasting myself, the first two seasons of Rykter I was in awe over. To say and hint to so much over such a short time as around 9 mins per episode, was brilliant. And I loved the undercurrent of good that emerged through the key characters. What especially impressed me was how the show depicted how the attitude of the parents influenced the behaviour and emotional wellbeing of their children.
Sorry to disagree with such a nice and talented guy as Teo Tomczuk, but I feel his interpretation of Mathias counters what is evident in the story. Mathias isn't selfish when moving out of his parents' home and choosing an education of his choice, he has begun an emancipation process. Likely subconsciously to make sure he can stand on his own two feet, should his parents reject him over his sexuality.
Just like Felix and Sara, Mathias feels he has to be a certain person to accepted in his family. Sara had her dream of becomming a boxer quashed by her sister and her sister's friend, and opted for medical school in Bergen instead. She had the grades, the discipline and brain to adapt to her family's ideal. Felix didn't. Nor does he have the courage to break free, as Mathias. So Felix hide behind masks. At home he is the obedient son, outside of home he scare to inquisitive questions away by being a bully. The homophobia is interesting, though. Is that self-loathing camouflage to hide the fact he himself is gay, or built up aggression from having been abused by a male himself?
Thea, off course, is obvious. Being rejected by her father created a need to conceal that, so she lied.
Synnøve is almost parenting her own mother.
The only one with an harmonious homelife is Erik. His parents do what is best for their kid no mather what. When Erik needed to leave Bergen, his mother Welcommed him to Vesterøy with open arms. When he needed to leave Vesterøy after having been beaten up, his father welcommed him to recover with him in Bergen. Erik is free to choose whatever he wants in life. His parents will love and support him regardless. Because of that he has the kindness, thoughtfulness and solid morals that comes more and through during season 1 and 2.
As for Erik not defending Mathias when Felix attacks him, we should have in mind that Erik's young age was the only thing between him and a prison sentence after the episode in Bergen, and should he have been charged with another assault so soon after the first one, he could face prison. Therefore it makes perfectly sense he neither defended himself against Felix' gang attacking him, or Felix attacking Mathias. Cause should he lose his cool and fiercely assault someone, that could send him to jail. But he did get Felix away from there, de-escalating the situation.

I think you should have the creator of the series Christoffer Viskum Ebbesen in one of these, cause my impression is he has written a completely different character and show to the one Teo Tomczuk, who is great playing Mathias, talks about here. Allow me to explain.
    1) Episode 1 season 1 on the ferry. Erik is looking at Sara and Thea when Mathias return with some food for the girls. But instead of walking straight by Erik and to the girls, as 90%, or 99%, of Norwegians would, he stops to talk to Erik and tell him that silly thing about label names on bags. There are two reasons why he would do that. Either he is interested in Erik, or he is worried Erik could lose him Sara. The fact he smiled when addressing Erik, sort of exclude the latter, cause no one smiles friendly at a rival. Which leaves the question, did Mathias fancy Erik already from there, or was he just so fed up with Felix he hoped to meet a new buddy?
With that in mind it would have been interesting to hear the writer and creator's thoughts behind that scene.
Mathias and Sara's final break up scene is another scene it would have been interesting to hear the creator's thoughts about. With break ups not exactly being uncommon among the two, what was it that made them both realize the break up was final all of a sudden? Did Mathias confess to her about his conflicting sexual feelings, or had she maybe worked it out herself, and confronted him with her suspicions? Immediately before Erik left them alone to fetch drinks, he had told Mathias to, I am maybe paraphrasing slightly, sit his fat arse down there. Was that was alerted her to the possibility there could be more than friendship between Mathias and Erik? She before this had gotten the friend treatment when inviting Erik to spend New Year's Eve with her, despite having kissed him on the lips. (Erik have this strange habit of devaluating kisses - either they are friendly, or they are drunken lista les. Maybe he should talk to a therapist about why that is? It could be poor self-esteem, not believeing anyone could be interested in him like that. But most likely it signals the kiss Sara gave him didn't set off any sparks or warm feelings. Therefore kind of odd the kiss with Mathias lasted a lot longer, and that he was so keen to talk to Mathias about it afterwards?). If Sara suspected Erik could be gay from the low response to her New Year's kiss, and Mathias came clean to her when they broke up, that could explain why she took Erik to a gay related art exhibition, when the poor guy thought they were going to the fairground. She hoped he would come out to her by demonstrating how LGTBQ friendly she was, by going to the exhibition.
Also when Erik two months after the kiss got talk to Mathias about, Erik used the word stas. Stas is a word used to give a positive description to a significant event. Winning a gold medal in the Olympics is stas, an actor getting a standing ovation and so on is stas. A drunken kiss, though - no. That is closer to violation. So why was Erik saying getting the kiss was stas?
Questions I would be curious to hear the creator's thoughts on. Cause when I watch drama series I find fun in analyzing the characters and storylines, hoping to predict what is going to happen. But for that there have to be a certain logic to the progress of the story. Something season 1 and 2 had plentyful of, but which have been totally absent in season 3.
