How I love entering Thorndyke’s world. Secure, ordered, infallible. As a craftswoman/artist the clever arcane methods used in Polton’s workshop - moulds, photography, gelatine castings and chemistry are so intriguing. I love the gentle humour and insights into everyday life of the period. Totally satisfying!❤❤ 3:46:18

I admittedly don’t know much about life the English country side but it seems strange to me that the constabulary in a small English country village didn’t know the who the dead man or his daughter were.

The story happens in London, a city that even at that time had approximately 5 million people living there.

Worth while googling for contemporary photos - you can sometimes see exactly where action takes place!

That writing is so ponderous I feel I'm jogging in wet concrete.

Elaine, the reading is good. The problem is the WRITING. If I find an example I'll let you know.

I know what you mean. It reminds me very much of the Robinson Crusoe I've listened to on here. Saying a whole sentence and then saying, that is to say, and then rephrasing the whole sentence.

Needs an English person to read this. Lots of words pronounced wrong

The reading is intelligent and easily understood in spite of a few mispronounced words. Sadly I find that a considerable number of otherwise well-read stories include mispronunciations.
