I am an automotive electrician from Athens Greece since 1976. I had to sit in desks for seminars so that I could follow the modern technology which is constantly changing every little while. I invested quite a lot of money in equipment of tools and scanners. Now at my 63 years of age, I continue to learn. Every day, something new for me. So I totally understand my distant colleague Kenny. Greetings from Greece to everyone...
Hi I am from INDIA and I am 64 , I have renault logan since 2008 and I purchased new mahindra xuv300 w8 based on tivoli .but early times cars are good ,strong and simple too. i am fighting with new run by wire 😂 technology.
The reason you had the dtc was because you created a conflict when you disconnected the cable. The shift wheel, the shift actuator that drives cable and the transmission itself, all have sensors in them. When you disconnected the cable, all the sensors are still reading what gear each one should be. They should all be the same. When you disconnected the cable, you moved something. Probably the arm on the transmission itself. If the shifter and actuator are in park, but the trans is in another gear, a conflict is created and you got a code. I see you are working on a lot of Ford products. Its just a suggestion, but I would recommend you not use an aftermarket scan tool. Ford doesn't use traditional scan tools. You need 3 things. A PC that runs Windows, a Bosch VCM 2 or 3, and IDS software. There's no special hardware that you need to buy from Ford. You can get the VCM from Amazon. The only thing you get from Ford is the software. Most other manufacturers don't do it this way. Compared to other brands, this is a very economical system. Then you have exactly what we have at the dealerships. It has scope functions already built into it. If you want to do something like relative compression, or power balance tests, you don't even have to pop the hood like if you had to set up a scope. Its a menu option. Its no more difficult than checking for codes. You can also run EVAP diag tests, and your favorite, ABS service bleeds. In a few years you'll need to buy FDRS. Its the new software that is replacing IDS. All your old hardware will still work. Most vehicles that require FDRS are still going to be under warranty for a while, so it shouldn't be something you need to get right away. Also, you are correct on the TCM and PCM. They're in 1 box, but you treat them just like you would if they were 2 separate modules.
Cheers Ford guy! Having used IDS and multiple higher level scanners on the same vehicles for testing purposes myself - It's rare something in IDS can't be found in the scanners from Autel, TopDon,SnapOn etc. The key is to make sure the firmware is up to date. There is some lag time between manufacturers updates and 3rd party hardware but not much! Most of these companies are pretty on the ball when it comes to updates. There's very rarely a situation where my scanner doesn't get the job done. Thanks for responding. It's nice to know how Ford plans to do things going forward.I'll have to ask my Ford friends about FDRS.
My pro 431x v5 had all sorts of calibrations, relearns, adjustments, ... hey kenny.. read that back label again. Says right on it, launch pro431x v5. Yeah, if you can afford this particular scanner, GET IT!!! Better than solus, and matco. Mucho better. Recently got an xtool ip508s and while I'm loving it, I'm disappointed it has no freeze frame, unless I'm just a dolt. Good show
I suspect, but please tell me if im wrong.. The actuator and TCM will have a pre-programmed tolerance for cable stretch and bush wear so that they can maintain correct functionality over time and use. If that is the case, changing the bushings or the cable without doing a manual reset will throw the module out of whack. I'm basing this on what i'd expect to be the norm so please correct me if otherwise 🖖
.' ..had to find cable adjustment mode...' -on the Snap On scan tool. I adjusted my selector cable with zip ties. No complaints yet from the computer. Mine insOBD- zero. I guess it exists in the 'cloud(s)' ??

At 10:42 when you were looking for PCM you went right past GSM (Gear Shift Module). I wonder what that would have said? Thanks for another great video!
Used the Snap-On Modus before, old boss had 1 and some other smaller launch scanners, basicly code readers and monitors.....Shop in Az we did a lot of Ford 6 liter diesels, I learned more about those than I ever wanted to haha. Boss bought a launch scanner that covered those diesels. So I could road test and watch oil pressures etc to see when they shut down. They required 500+ psi oil pressure to just start! Replaced many oil pumps, and oil rail seals etc. I could have the turbo off, and on the bench in under 15 minutes, I worked on em soooo much lol Yeah I had a collection of those plastic inserts, as well as those clips used on door lock rods etc, come in handy in a pinch. After 45 years of wrenching ya build up quite a bit of "extras" collected. Sadly, when I was "cleaning house" I tossed out so many relays, contact switches, micro switches, flasher units because I had no one that wanted em. Sending units, cadillac pressure switches from my big rig mechanic days. Couldn't take em or need in the Philippines lol.....IF I ever go home for a visit gunna try n ship as many of my tools with me here. Ain't got $10,000 to ship a container across the Pacific !
Hey Ken If you want to keep the battry in great life extender do not charge Lith Iion to 100% let them run down to 5% then charge to 85 to 90% and never fully discharge them if possible and never full charge them 100% they batteries dont like it and kills themselves
Love our Launch scan tool at work. I use it 99% of the time over our Snap on scanner. Only thing I use the Snap On scanner for is 2018 and up Chrysler corp vehicles because it has the subscription to unlock the vehicle security. With out that all you can dobis read codes. Cant clear codes or read data. We have not gotten the extra subscription for our Launch yet.
launch is definitely great for the money, they use OEM style data. there will be some things it can't do. i have had mine for going on 7 years and it still boots up and works the same as it did day one.
Nice job. Strange that the little scanner can do what the Snap Off couldn't. I found with Fords, particularly European based models, Forscan on a laptop, using an EML327 adapter can do everything. Yeah, more equipment, laptop and an adapter to add to the collection, so probably not worth it for you, if that little guy can do the job..
At 62 and having grown up in a family auto and truck repair garage I'm glad it's almost time to retire. How can they make something like a shifter adjustment more F ed up? And why? Not to mention if you are dead set on making it electronic, why even have a cable?

Kenny. A lot of your audience aren't pros, just diy wrenchers like me. I get confused about what gasket sealers like permatex to use in different applications. Blue, red, clear, black, old school gasket seal, who knows. And they all say not for use around gas or oil, but everything I do is covered in gas and oil...so wtf?? Would you care to make a review of gasket sealing options video?
Understand I was always good with new technology with engine controls more. I see things like this. I think the old timers I learned from were right engineers love to reinvent the wheel. This is ridiculous! For what, instead of a gearshift, A knob? My question is, why? Most people would not remember Chrysler tried to replace the gearshift many years ago with buttons. You can imagine how that worked out since they went back to the gear shift. I also remember there were three shops that would touch the complicated nightmare that did not function easily when it was brand new. I worked at one of the three.
@@williamwhite9767 Everything that's going on is accelerating this sad reality. Add the fact that a lot of aftermarket parts are becoming complete trash .
Kenny, your scan tool won't last very long if you recharge it prematurely. Batteries develop memories. By charging it at 70%, it will begin to show that it needs charging when it doesn't. I recommend you let go down to at least 20% before charging it at 3 or 4 times. And remember, you still have your SnapOn scanner available for use while it's charging.
