This Is How Netflix Plans to Crack Down on Password Sharing

- Netflix's plan to crack down on password sharing worldwide is becoming more clear. The streaming service is currently testing two separate methods to charge people for sharing passwords. These tests are being conducted in markets outside the United States, but changes are coming for subscribers in the U.S. next year.
JANUARY 2023 UPDATE: Netflix updated its Help Center with official information on changes to password sharing in the United States: help.netflix.com/en/node/1232...

JANUARY 2023 UPDATE: Netflix updated its Help Center with official information on changes to password sharing in the United States: help.netflix.com/en/node/123277?ba=SwiftypeResultClick&q=password%20sharing
But in 2017 Netflix's Corporate account tweeted "Love is sharing a password. " They encouraged sharing password now they want subscribers to stop doing it. Sounds like a big class action people!!!

I share with my two children. I will cancell my subscription and they will lose $20 a month for an extra $3 to $6. I have been a customer from day one and been debating about canceling because of content. This will push me over the edge.
Other streaming services gonna follow the Netflix by next year or 2 , then u have to cancel them all , nothing gonna stay the same forever, wake up and smell the coffee, they just try to protect thire asset like anyone do.
oh noooo, what is netflix gonna do they just lost a customer 😱😱😱
Well if they lose too many that will be a problem
@Da’Quan Johnson it matters
netflix has to make money. Cancel if don't want to pay. I'm Keeping mine and Kicking off anyone not in my house. Its a want not a need.
I canceled my Netflix subscription several months ago. Was running out of content I watched, and it was costing too much for what I did watch. I switched to Disney+, and Paramount+ instead, and together, they equal one Netflix premium tier subscription with more content I enjoy. Plus I think it's somewhat Dumb Netflix charges extra for 4K, and HDR content while most other services include both in the typical subscription cost.
I've been with Netflix off and on for years (mostly off) and I just can't seem to stay with them as a subscriber. Over $20 a month after taxes for 4k?! That s#@%'s ridiculous!
That's so true!!!
Which I forgot to mention that the competition can now offer premium 4k content with enhanced features like Netflix, but at a much lower price.
Now starting in November, Netflix will offer a cheaper ad-supported option. The downside is it will only be available in SD, which is a huge slap in the face.
@@wturner777 you forgot to mention that you don't get everything with the ad based service ether I was actually thinking 🤔 to go to the cheeper version until I found out I wouldn't get access to All the movies 🎥😢
@@rustyshackleford6035 I later learned that part and sadly you get what you paid for. Like I mentioned before, there's competition out there.
Once this happens, my family is canceling Netflix.

Netflix needs to make it's service better. One thing that Netflix could do is to add HD video to the ad-supported plan, and the ability to download videos on ad-supported Netflix (when Netflix ad-supported plan launches). It could also produce more original programming and releasing one or two episodes a week. Doing all of those things would help Netflix earn back subscribers.
So what would happen if I put Netflix on for my daughter in the car while we were traveling and my husband was also watching it at home? Wouldn’t the phone and the house service have different IP addresses?
Or if I went to visit my mom who lives across country and wanted to login on her TV to watch it while I’m there? If they really make it this hard to watch an already overpriced streaming service then I won’t be keeping it. Too much of a headache and definitely not worth it.
Not dimension that in some countries ip tracking is the legal.... And in other countries people don't even have static ip as a default. Maybe someone should educate Netflix's Tech gurus
I don't like the previous used in that location. Like there is several problems
1. IP addresses change. Like UA-cam TV sometimes thinks I'm outside of my area due to this
2. If you have a vacation house you visit or maybe a vacation spot you visit. "Then the previous used in that location" messes you over.
Yes I see that being a problem, especially the vacation house thing. But it’s still in testing. We will see what happens.
how is this going to be a problem? When you're away, at your vacation house or visiting a friend you can stream via your phone on your tv
@@invictus4102 why should someone have to go through all that for an overpriced streaming service tho?
And wouldn’t the IP adress be different for a phone in another location than it is for your main house?
What if you travel for work and you don’t have the option of casting to the TV and you wanna use your laptop?
@@invictus4102 Only for 30 days... Is imagine going on a business trip for 31. This will really impact for example people who For example live alone.... Never shared with anyone but tend to travel.
Thats not fair. My child who has used netflix way more than i ever did b4 this year or so is now attending college and i refuse to pay n e more for the usage when summer breaks are over and the return to school which would make it look like a different household and it was the same device for many years until i upgraded 'em to a firestick for this fall.
After being a faithful customer for almost 10 yrs with very little usage on my end but more on my child's i will consider canceling b4 i pay more. Bc i already pay for 2 screens, it shouldnt matter if that 2nd screen is home for the summer or on a college campus for the school year. I am already paying more.
So $20, ads,and cant share?!?! Things aint looking good for them
Ads will be optional and for much less than $20; ad-free plans will continue to be offered.
@@MichaelSaves ah I see now, im glad someone with credentials spoke up because aint no way premium service would have ads!! Though people would argue if youre paying for non cable its already premium
That's not going to turn out well for them in the United States of America
i use my netflix on my ipad, laptop, work computer, ..how will they know thats me and not a friend? i doubt they can really implement this
My only guess is they will use your IP address. I'd it's different from our home address they will charge us. Who knows. Whatever it is I'm sure we will all be paying more money.
There's just not enough good content for what they're asking
Correct! Not worth it!
So what does that mean? I can't watch on multiple devices anymore? I can't have more than two screens on
There's no reason for this to be a thing
Isn’t that the whole point of the premium plan, to share it with family members who may live outside the home? Who needs 4 simultaneous streams at one location?
Families with kids who want to watch in their room or the basement would require additional streams - just one example.
Exactly I have premium version because I'm over the road truck driver. Nobody needs premium version if it's Limited to one house
I live in two homes so I gotta pay more for my own account? WTF! HELL NAH
I kinda don’t understand this. I have a premium account with 4 profiles on it (siblings and friends). Thus, I pay 19.99 for the sole purpose to be able to watch separately on 4 different devices. What exactly is going to change concerning this? Am I gonna need to pay more? Cause I already am.
4 people can still watch at the same time but only in one house using the same internet connection. If they go to another place and use a different WiFi then it won't work.
@@wassen46 What if the main house member travels somewhere? How will they be able to watch on their own account that they pay for?
I agree I will also cancel my subscription. Been a premium member for years. And pay for 4 slots. If you regulate who I allow access to the slots I pay for, or try to charge more money I'm done cya wouldn't want to be ya !
Very curious as to how Netflix knows when your password is being shared. If you're using a VPN or similar how could they possibly track you.
Your password is being shared when you create more than one profile on an account. They literally have it built into their infrastructure and act like their users are criminals for using what they encouraged in the first place.
@@Tyler_W what if like 5 people just use the same profile ?
It's going to be a hard one to crack.
@@amey_852 I was thinking about what if I only have one kids account and two kids are watching it at the same time and all the other profiles are full?
they can stop anyone from streaming using a paid VPN but i got a better idea host your own VPN using your ISP and can connect anywhere in your home and give your ovpn file to your family and let them connect to you i've tested it with spectrum TV and it gives me access to home tv streams that i couldn't access outside before but now i can using my own hosted VPN of my Router
my question is how will they stop this new sharing that could possibly happen if more people found out
Netflix is gonna lose more than accounts! There stock will plummet again!
Very interesting, it's a good thing that I left Netflix earlier this year
Same, after subscribing off and on for years.
If this goes ahead, I too will be cancelling. Easily enough done, just cancel the DD.
So are they going to charge more because I have an account for my wife and separate accounts for my kids? What about when I travel or watch on my lunch break when at work in a different city? All those are viable uses that are fair IMO. what Netflix has yet to say is what constitutes password sharing....if I give that password and login information to my friends, that sharing. If my immediate family and myself use it that should not be considered sharing.
i think its DUMB that Netflix would pull this move of trying to crackdown on sharing a login across subaccounts
plus it had Nothing good to watch
other subscription services equal up to what Netflix used to be along with free ad supported services too
There is absolutely nothing on Netflix that I want to see
People on Twitter and the white house would suggest cuties to watch
@@boku-no-pico 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Still with the Cuties 😂 when will people get over that movie 🎥 🤣
Dont you just hate it when a company expands on the backs and at the cost of its loyal customers. The intrigue of most Netflix shows are powered through communal effort, the talks SHARED between friends. When that effectively ends, I suspect Netflix as a whole will lose its appeal. Bad move. Hating what the future holds for our kids $$$$
At the risk of sounding like a big dummy, I had no idea - - I'm talking none that Netflix subscribers shared or could share their accounts until I saw it here on Mike's channel. I wonder if the other streaming services like HBO Max and Paramount let you share your account?
yeah, all you gotta do is give someone your email and password and they can use your subscription. it works for anything!
@@lucabonilla06 problem is when it's actually you trying to use it on another home or computer, TV, etc. This is supposed to be the advantage of internet streaming over standard cable or satellite
What happened to, “Sharing is caring?”
Netflix: Sorry, times are tough.
Competition happened to “Sharing is caring.”
They dont care about either!
Why should I pay extra, when Netflix already increase my subscription rate every time I turn my back?
How will they know? I'm still logged in from living with my parents but they never watch it.
I pay for 4 screens, I don't care who watches them, even in Timbuctoo, as long as it is with my permission. If I have an issue, I change the password. This will just cause me to cancel my subscription. Period. I hardly watch it now anyway.
That's the thing. They charge an exorbitant amount for extra streams and they tie it to 4K availability. If I live alone and want 4K the extra streams are wasted. Why not let family elsewhere use them? A stream is a stream and I'm paying for them. Of course it's all moot to me now. I already gave up on Netflix.
Good luck enforcing this.
They are already losing subscribers left and right like are they trying to run it to the ground All I gotta say Netflix good luck trying to get more subscribers now You know there's a lot of people out there sharing the account and it Doesn't help raising the price every year either The amount of movies and TV shows on the app Is quite embarrassingLike it takes me a few hours just to search and try to find something to watch because I've already watched everything they don't put anything new fast enough so it's not worth it With the price that's going to raise as well again
Netflix should think about cutting prices in half they really suck any movie from 2020-2022 are total disaster
And they've been making an increasing number of stupid decisions for years before even 2 years ago.
Netflix is over priced imo. I average maybe 1 month every two years with them. I rotate around mostly with other services.
Netflix might even have A VPN Plan for more money!
If they charge for multiple profiles, just everybody use the main when they log in
Australia will be receiving that password sharing tax soon, they increased the prices and now this??? I'd love to cancel my sub but, my family still watch it.
You don’t need Netflix or any other paid tv subscription. All you need is a good IPTV service and you have access to all content, even live ppv sporting events.
What's IPTV ?
@@rustyshackleford6035 internet tv. Mine is $17/mo for 5 tv’s. Over 16,000 live channels and access to nearly any movie, premium movie channels, ppv events, tv shows, and tv series ever made all on demand. It’s like about a thousand times better than cable at a fraction of the price. I feel like an idiot for hanging onto my cable for as long as I did.
if i pay for 4 screens to be used who cares who uses them. Netflix needs to learn another hard lesson.
I thought the problem was taken care of when they limited amount of IP addresses
You are confusing the problem. The problem isn't sharing or whatever. It is how big that bonus is for the CEO and heads.
Think about it. If you have a vacation house or if you go to a given vacation spot often, then you will end up having to buy another plan after 2 weeks. This is to include if you are visiting the place again the following year.
@@TheAIKnowledgeHub They might make an extra few bucks here and there as people will keep changing their plans or people will get smart and say they’re tired of being ripped off by them and just cancel them altogether and take them out of business. There are plenty of other service providers to go with today.
Nope nope nope. Netflix is trying to crack down on family members using the same account? I’m going to cancel my account because your already taking to much money from everyone and your not following through with what we signed up for. Your not going to decide what I do with my account especially when you have no problem taking money from everyone and yet you have poor service. I’ll go back to a dvd and buying my movies that way.
This is going to seriously mess with those people outside the US, who use a VPN to get US content, since a VPN can frequently change origin locations, as far as any provider can tell. I don't fall into that category of users, but this may effectively put an end to that type of usage.
It’s not just those outside the US. I travel a lot for work and use a VPN at restaurants, airports, hotels, etc since I want to protect my banking, email, and other personal information. I get that they want to crack down on “illegal” use, but I draw the line at paying more for my own usage 🙄
@@ellicel I saw something recently that's suggests they are going to charge extra based on profiles. If there are 3 profiles on your account, then you have to pay extra for the 2 extra profiles. So, if you share an account but all on the same profile you might be ok, but if everyone sharing account has their own profile you'd be charged for each extra profile. So, if you have 3 kids and a spouse and you each have your own profile but live in the same house you are screwed. If you're 1 person with one account, you can be in a new city or town every day of the year with a different IP and it wont matter as long as you only have 1 profile.
But i HAVE NETFLIX ON MY TV AND MY SMARTPHONE... WHAT IF I WATCH NETFLIX IN MY WORK???? I WILL GET BANNED??????
Phkn thieves! There is already a limit on how many TV's can be used depending on what tier of plan you have. Starting from 1 to 4 TV's at a time. Phkn thieves! Modded tv apps!
This is my thoughts. You can have so many sub accounts and so many streams at once how is this hurting profit when you share. All I see is more people moving to other services
This is why I use Kodi don't need netflix i can stream anything i want to see.
😆
What's Kodi ?
How can they possibly implement this effectively though? For example every year I visit my Granddad in Spain we now go out twice a year. With every home rental included now having smart TV’s we always log into Netflix when we go. Up until very recently my Granddad lived in a very small area in which there are very little rental properties we often stayed in the same villas every year so would that not be a previously used location? Not to mention we go twice a year and it only allows for it once a year.
So I could be penalised for using Netflix whilst on holiday? Or what about when I go to visit my parents. I regularly go over to their house before Covid it wasn’t uncommon for me to split my time between their house and my partners. I’d often spend days sleeping over night at theirs. This meant I would log into Netflix on a TV on occasion at their house. So I pay for Netflix but cannot go over to my parents and watch a movie with them through Netflix or It’d be considered password sharing?
I just don’t see how Netflix can realistically put something into action like this because what they’ll end up doing is preventing legitimate users from being able to use Netflix. Many people travel for work, or some have two properties it’s not uncommon for people commuting to London to have a rental place in the town I live in to stay in during work weeks. Or those with holiday homes?
In fact anyone who visits any home more than once in a year would be in trouble if they wanted to watch Netflix whilst there. Doesn’t that sound a bit ridiculous? Also if it’s done by IP’s how does that work if you have a house that has two internet routers? My parents house is so old and they now work from home almost permanently since Covid that they have two routers because of connectivity issues and again because their house is so old and quite large one router wouldn’t cover the entire property.
I recently got back from Spain at the end of last year and forgot to log out so I was logged in for probably more than two weeks and had to ask Netflix to sort it out for me but what about in cases like that? You forget to log out and you go past the 2 week limit. Either way I think this isn’t well thought out on their part because there are so many variables and reasons a person might legitimately be logging in from two locations or different locations at the same time or on multiple occasions. It’s basically saying you can’t log in to Netflix when you go over a friend or family’s house to watch TV with them and you can’t enjoy Netflix on holiday if you ever go for more than 2 weeks or visit the same place more than once a year.
Had Netflix off and on for years. Last time I had it I tried the 4K version for a month. I really couldn't tell the difference between 4k and 1080p. I'm sure some can tell the difference.
The difference is upscale also its more about the amount of streams at once than quality
the super large pixelized images are easier to see in 4k lol. Seriously, I tried it the other day to watch a serie with good quality and was very disappointed of the quality.
My daughter and I have T Mobile and with that we get Netflix. Only one of us can view Netflix at a time unless we pay an extra fee a month. That seems fair. I like the joke I saw the other day, Netflix lost one million subscribers, 10 million wondered why their passwords didn't work.
This policy actually discriminates against families and households that have jobs where one family member is gone for long periods of time. My truck driving husband is usually gone for 2 to 3 months at a time. What military families or oil rig families. Absolutely not this ain't it and I hope people realize this. I've tried going to Netflix and mentioning this.
It just happened my Netflix signed out and I can’t get back in
But, "How do they plan to crack down on password sharing"", yo. Not, "here are the options Netflix is giving you."
This video is from 5 months ago. I'll do an update when Netflix formally announces its plan for the US.
@@MichaelSaves Ahh, thanks. Yeah, just trying to plan ahead on what I'll need to do, thanks.
Why is only Netflix doing this though? I mean I'm sure Disney Plus, HBO Max, Paramount Plus users also share passwords...
If it works for Netflix, the others may follow.
I spent 45 mins tonight scrolling through Netflix to find something good to watch. If they require me my mum and sister to pay extra money for our account, I’ll just back out. I already find it enough money to watch the random few shows that come out that are good on there. I’d rather just use another platform and start renting the things I want to watch
I haven't made up my mind if I'm going to cancel or keep. I think when this starts to roll out there I think there might be a lot of ppl charged for profiles they are not using. And now Netflix is getting commercials. I understand that it's for the lower price but I promise they will show up on the other subscriptions. It feels like we are headed in the direction of cable. At the moment it's better buy give it a few more years and we will be back where we started. No different than Peacock. When it first came out there was a few commercials here and there with the commercial subscription. But now those commercials are worse than UA-cam. Every 4 minutes there is a commercial just about. So I got the highest one because it was just getting unbearable. Now here we are with Netflix. Commercials and more limitations. Here is what we have decided to do going forward right now.
We will not pay more than 20$ for a subscription. If it goes over that we cancel it.
If price continue upward which I am sure they will then we will cycle subscriptions. Instead of having 5 subscriptions we will only run 2 at a time until new content comes out on other platforms and let that content build up then we will keep switching like that. But hopefully this goes well so we don't have to cancel permanently but we will see what happens.
They doubled charge me for my account. Netflix stated they only billed ounce and it was a problem with my credit card. I called credit card company they stated Netflix billed me twice and would I like to dispute the extra charge. I said I am not paying them twice. The credit card cancelled the charge. Netflix canceled my account. I am calling the credit card company and disputing the original charge and canceling Netflix. See you later Netflix you are going to woke anyway.
It won’t just happen with Netflix. Eventually it will happen to all streaming services. That’s why having basic cable or satellite is still the best option for multiple devices.
The only problem with cable is the price is high for little to no content
Theyde forgetting that to share an account someone is still paying for it. A lot of people paying for so what are theu so money hungey for. Just liscense good shows instead of wasting money to create mediocre onces
Well I think this is stupid I think you should be able to pick at least two maybe three primary places that you're able to use your account a lot of people are not going to bother and they're going to lose more business than they ever did they always said share and that's what people did why can't they limit how many people you can share it account that would have been a better option
More people that cancel because they dont want to bared from letting people stealing will cause issues. One they will not be able to make content. So do you want content or cry that you cant steal anymore? And yes it is stealing doesn't matter if its you kids or your friend its stealing.
i hope they go bankrupt for all their greediness
F Netflix. Argentina barely holds itself together and comes with this nonesense.
UA-cam premium equals 92 cents. They literally want 3 dollars just to share. Think about this 92 cents for the account that costs us 12 a month here. Where are they getting this logic from. People in this country can't afford 3 dollars, I'm not saying they are poor or anything. It's that the economy is different.
Nextflix greediness will be their downfall.
I can honestly see they will end up folding the company has a terrible selection of choice of movies in the beginning it was away better. They keep upping prices telling us it’s improving what we will watch not true it’s hard to find anything good to watch .My best guess is they are going to loose a ton of customers with this decision . I don’t share my password with anybody else .Anybody I know wouldn’t want to be bothered even viewing Netflix .I’m seriously going to leave and find another site that has more update movies
If they do raise the price one more time, I will cancel
Netflix is overpriced. Far more than any other streaming service. Beyond that they keep dropping shows reducing the value.
Good, and I unsubscribe byeee
Rather watch Amazon
Then they'll go out of business when they start enforcing it. They do that to my wife and I? Later 🖕

I already pay €21 a month for the four screens at once level of access so I can watch things in my house and my girlfriend's house , with my and her family, which should be more than enough!
