  • You’ve been told to get forward in your skiing….but why? You’ve been told to stay centred…but relative to what? You’ve been told to not be too far forward….but when?
I hope this video helps you discover answers to the above questions by explaining relative slope angle change or as Author Ron Le Master calls it “the virtual bump”.

Excellent video. I’m just about to do my BASI 1 but I’ve been teaching friends and family for years. The main thing I tell beginners is that the mountain is always flat when you’re going across it. People start heading straight down the fall line and freak out, so they forget how to turn. Wide turns across the mountain are vital for them to stay in control.

What a beautiful snow and skiing there :)
Well about the virtual bump, the question is about absorption and not to flying after it. And in the fall line the question is about being active in your external ski going forward on it.

so am I understanding properly..the upper body doesn't change in position just the position of the feet below the upper body/hips..as slope angle reduces this I'ds the point at which we recentre the feet under our hips...??????

I’d steer clear of absolutes like the upper body doesn’t change angle. The main point is what you experience with the slope angle changes constantly through a turn especially the more you turn across a steep slope.

gotcha..thx 4 the reply...kinda been working on finding/feeling the flat ski as I work my way from one turn to the other...keep up the good work..who knows may ski ya at silverstar this season..best regards nick

This is the best explanation of this topic I have seen!

This is great for a physics class. However, a skier is not going through a calculus equation to determine their balance. It is an intuitive reaction and flow through the turn.

I agree they are not going through calculating it. But one thing I do know is we all like to know why behind things. Sometimes this can help someone try something different to get a result.

In the old days of straight skis, you would move your COG throughout the turn . You would move forward at the beginning of the turn to engage the tips, then to the center for the middle of the turn, then back to finish the turn and which unloaded the energy in the bent ski. Fun to play with even on shaped skis.

Great video. This is so crucial for any type of good skiing and it does not get the attention it deserves. Most instructors preach to you should stay forward and that is the wrong message (even though many many skiers are ‘in the backseat’ in the wrong part of the turn).

Great video Tom. George Joubert’s book was my skiing bible in the 80s. Glissement.

Great video, particularly as I knew about the virtual bump but never twigged that this is why we are always trying to "be centered in the future by changing our positioning now".
Question: I understand now why we want to "get forward" at the top of the turn, so that we are centered by the middle of the turn (apex, fall line, etc).
But why is it that being on our heels makes turn initations so hard in the first place? Is it related to the virtual bump, or something else - perhaps because parts of the ski (i.e. the front half) isn't fully engaged, or maybe biomechanics making it harder to shift balance to the big-toe edge, etc?

Thank you. I love the physics of skiing. Your video explains the virtual bump so I really get it.

Where do you stand on your feet to be athletic and ready to move? Not usually on the heels. Or at least not too balanced there
