- In this video I will be making a new lead for Maggie. I will be weaving it from 550 paracord using the Solomon weave. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!
Ha ha....I didn't know you had this sort of video out too. I've been watching many of the bushcraft/camping videos over a year or so...and just happened to come across this through search of instructions for a new dog leash. Brilliant!
Thank you Simon, now I finally know how that weave is done. I just started learning knots. Maggie is a beautiful breed. I enjoy watching her when she goes on your walks.
loosely coil the working ends and put a rubber band around them to shorten time of pulling them through the loops of the weave as you go along. Pull cord from the banded loops as needed

do a double cobra weave and you don't have to pull anything through

Great upload. I made something very similar with a locking hasp at each end to secure hand tools to such as an axe or saw to prevent them getting lost when in use.

Nice, smart leash for the little doggie. Well done. Suggestion for the offcuts: weave them into two-foot long sections and dot them strategically around the garden during egg hunts at Easter. They'll look like snakes and will serve wonderfully to frighten small children.
+John Finnis - That is a fine idea John, and if they don't scare the children, they be fairly effective tripwires being camouflaged green - I speak from experience!!

Cool looking lead. I made a handle for my LK35 using the same method. Might have to make a lead for the new puppy. I found a sunny day and a beer helps.

+Bushcraft Bjarke - Cheers Bjarke, I'm quite pleased with how it came out, this is the second one I've made and it's much better than the first (which didn't have the buckle). I did think about a collar for Maggie, but for now, the offcuts have gone into my ever expanding Cordage bag!! Lol! Atb, Simon.
Great lead. I'm gonna try it. I have a 80lbs Golden who is a massive puller and i have a Edelrid carabiner rated 25KN and just 39g so I'm gonna use that instead of the steel hook.

Hi Simon. Sorry for the lateness of my comment but I wonder if you have considered making a lead using the Paracord Ripcord Sinnet weave. The Ripcord weave seems to have great potential for your water based activities in that it can be unravelled and deployed in moments should emergencies need a lot of paracord. I am sure you could incorporate the clips within the lead. I use them for my rucksacks' zip pulls but they are only short with about 6 feet of paracord per zip pull. Still, I have 4 or so zips on the rucksacks so I could have a 23 feet length of paracord within a minute I reckon. 100 feet in one lead could be a lifesaver. Great videos and you've inspired me to make a bucksaw. Cheers.
I just found your site - love this weave but I have to watch again till get it going in my mind - my dogs are pullers so I need to make a good lead and I think this one will work- what is finished length please? Thank you for the good tutorial

So now, if you wanted to make another 1.5 meter lead, you could cut off the 12 meters at the outset leaving only one ( more versatile) remnant. And you have the formula 58 ⅔ m. of cordage per m. of lead.

Craig Mooring - Ah, having thought about it, I only started with 100ft of cord (about 30m) you'll need to work it out again, lol!
Right: (100ft.) 30.48 m. - 12m. + 17.52 m. (57.48 ft.) of cord per 1.5 m. (4.92 ft.) of lead. That's 11.68 ft. of cord (11' 8⅙") per foot of lead.

Simon...just found your channel and love it. Question... how long do you estimate it took you to make the leash? As a beginner, it would definitely take me longer. But at least I would know a minimum of time it would take. Thanks much!
Hi Joetta and thank you! It took about an hour and a half to two hours for the weaving - it speeds up as you get into the rhythm and the working ends get shorter. The main difficulty is the amount of paracord you have to pull through. It’s good fun though and oddly therapeutic haha - good luck! Simon
