As a Tamil from India, Sri Lankan Tamils have amazed me. Outstanding & genuine people. This is from my experiences both in Canada & Australia.

I'm a Tamil Australian too (Indian origin) Kudos to the Sri Lankan Tamils for being proud of their heritage. They're the inspiration to many Indian Tamils.

I am so happy to see Shaun and Shankari talk about the trauma of the Tamils that lived through July 1983 riots in Sri Lanka. I almost lost my life in a Hydro Electric project engineers Camp in upcountry where the Sinhalese thugs brandishing swords and knives got me. I live with the scars of terror, to this day, unable to go back to Sri Lanka only because of the PTSD I struggle with caused by the Trauma. My two boys were born here in Australia, free of any of these traumatic experiences, but well aware of what happened to their Dad. My wife and I being the 1st generation migrants to Australia are so thankful to Australia that has given us refuge and a great life to our two children. I am glad that Shankari talks about her parent's trauma and I sincerely hope that Shankari could use her fame as the writer and lawyer to get justice to those that lost their lives in Sri Lanka genocide that was committed by the Sri Lankan Government.

The riots that happened to the minorities in Sri Lanka must be taught in History.
Post colonial era of Sri Lanka as been very much shaped by racism and discrimination fuelled by jealousy and lack of empathy and wisdom.
If we don't teach the younger generation of Sri Lanka about how the majority Sinhalese have been treating the minority communities of Sri Lanka since 1970s, the pattern will only continue.
The history books of Sri Lanka are filled with the prosperous pre colonial thambapanni and the colonial ceylon. It pitifies the Sri Lankan Sinhalese as if only they suffered and no mention, nor a recognition of how the minority groups of Sri Lanka went through riots and lived through wars and discrimination and, how much they contributed to the development of the country.
Until this happens, we cannot hope for a better Sri Lanka. It will always remain a 'developing country' of majority Sinhalese!

The perfect explanation to what happened in Sri Lanka. Todays generation think Prabhakaran started it. But they dont know what led him to it even though terrirism isn't the way. Until Sinhalese people learn from their past mistakes & start treating the minorities equally, this country will never prosper. And as long as that happens the politicians will always make fools out of people using racism & religious discrimination.

No sinhalese treat tamils badly but many tamil from here specially Northern ones tend to act like they r struggling because of sinhalese..? The past unrest times ok but now what..? Most sinhalese get surprised why yall day things like that..? Every right r given to tamils bit we can't help that they r the minority of the country.. so obviously they'll represent less in some works..

You both are welcome to come back to feel and call Srilanka home. The NPP has provided an atmosphere conducive for all Srilankans to return home safely and live amongst your brethren while maintaining your acquired identity.

Jaffnese (Tamils) shouldn’t hesitate to assert our own Jaffnese Culture and Identity! Common Tamil identity overshadowed by Indians (Tamils) these days. Soon our unique identity dies out if we can’t preserve our Jaffnese identity

I moved to Australia in 1978 to The Upper Hunter and depressed for nearly 3 years because apart from missing family, l also could not get the Malaysian ingredients. After going back to Malaysia l actually missed Australia because l got used to the quiet life. My husband would drive 3 hours just to go to Sydney’s Chinatown for us to shop and eat then drive home again once every 6 months. Now life is so much easier and shopping on line is fantastic.

Has been happening for decades and decades all over Australia where Tamil refugees work in the kitchens of Sri Lankan restaurants. First time I heard of it publicised was by Colombo Social.

No doubt great injustice has been done to the Tamil people of Srilanka. It's heart warming to know that people like Shankari haven't forgotten it despite being far away at a safer place.

The Tamils [Tamizh] that come from outside Tamizhnadu are different to home-grown Tamizh people in many ways. I lived and studied in Tamizhnadu, so I can easily spot the differences.

Great Video. Thank you for sharing. I hope that some day the Tamil people of the world unite. It is such an ancient culture, but now split up and spread across so many countries, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and of course increasingly the many Tamil migrants in Western countries.
Historically, the Tamil empires were very powerful, covering most of South India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, and going all the way up to Indonesia. Unfortunately, not many today know how powerful and influential these Tamil empires were, empires such as the Cholas, Pandyas, Pallavas, Cheras, etc., and how wide their geographical spread was, cutting across continents. Not many know today for instance that Bali is still a Hindu enclave, because all of those regions were part of the South Indian Tamil empires, and that the world's largest temple (Angkor Wat) in Cambodia got built due to the influence of the once powerful Tamil empires.
I hope the Tamil people of the world rediscover their roots, and rejuvenate their ancient Tamil culture.

Tham(i)ll is how it should be pronounced, but someone started saying it wrong with a TA instead of THA long ago & people have been saying it wrong. Thamizh / Thamil is better.
Thanks ABC for another great video. The story of minority groups in sl are often misunderstood & misrepresented. So it's good to see things like this where you get to hear from people more

Glad to see no hateful comments from Sinhalese here. It''s not the same if you go to a youtube about a Sinhalese Sri Lankan winning some international award - plenty of Tamils commenting with hate and vitriol. It's most usually the diaspora Tamils who engage in such hate.
