  • And we're back again with another Miraculous episode. My goodness this was a big one. The story! It actually moved forwards, and in a really big way! Lila and Chloe's storyline starts to pick up steam, and the ending of this episode pretty much changes the status quo. Nothing will be the same going forward from here. Enjoy.

    About the school system: I don't live in France but I have researched their education system for a project a while ago.
    So the kids from Miraculous are currently in "middle school" and as of season 5 they will graduate from there soon. After that graduation they will all go to different high schools (called "lycee"). The high schools are specialised in certain skill sets, which is why the students need to decide what their path in life will be so early. You could see a little bit about it in the episode "wishmaker" when Luka explained that he is going to a high school with a focus on music.
    Quite a few countries in Europe have a system of this sort. Usually the idea isn't that the children should decide early what career they want to take in the future. As far as I know they can often choose to just explain their interests and skills and then the teachers (and parents) discuss with them what path (which school) could lead them into the right direction. Then the kids will have much more time to decide what career they want. Though the amount of choices later will be narrowed down, because the students specialise in high school.
    Take me for example. I grew up in Germany and here... the school system is a little complicated to explain to Americans, but generally speaking there is a path for general education on A-levels, but graduating from there is a lot of work. If you know early what you want to do and the career you want doesn't need an a-level-certificate, then you can choose to go to a specialised school instead. I went to a school about arts, graduated there when I was 19, then studied design in a specialised college, and there at age of 22-ish I finally decided what career I want. Then I further specialised myself in college until I was 27: Today I am a UX/UI-designer with a master degree. Back in school I didn't even know that this job exists, but it's perfect for me.

    • @10Bendog
      @10Bendog Рік тому +20

      My country has a similar system with the graduation from middle school to high school.
      With my marks on the finals ending up being much better than I expected and on behalf on the teachers' advice to my mom, I was enrolled in a high school that specializes in mathematics, natural science and (my class in particular) IT.
      Fast-forward several years later when I graduated from there and enrolled in an animation course at uni, because I've always been more the art kid, even all the way back in middle school.
      Just because I studied one thing in high school, didn't mean that I was set in stone to pursue that sort of career in the future.
      Then again, our city didn't have too many varied options to begin with, so in any case I wouldn't have gotten into an art school, because there wasn't really one at the time.

    • @empirestate8791
      @empirestate8791 Рік тому +23

      Seems like these decisions should be made between the teachers and students, and the class rep should have absolutely no involvement in this. Also, I'm sure the application process includes much more than just a form. This school has some really weird procedures.

    • @LunaRuna212
      @LunaRuna212 Рік тому +18

      @@empirestate8791 Oh yeah, I agree that the class rep has no business in those kind of important discussions and decisions. In German schools the only stuff that a class rep would do is hold speeches at events or help with organizing fun activities. I think they used to also carry "the class book" from the teacher's office into the class room everyday (a book where all teachers note down things like student presence and how students have behaved in class, if they did their homework, etc.). While this is an important document, it's not exactly life-changing stuff.

    • @LunaRuna212
      @LunaRuna212 Рік тому +6

      @@10Bendog Oh yeah, here in Germany you can definitely switch paths too, if necessary! However depending on which school you went to it could get difficult to switch paths, as often it would be required for you to repeat classes in a different school.
      If you're from a natural science school and you want to go into an art college - that would be less of an issue. But if you went to art school and want to become a doctor, then that's unfortunate. Because medicine is regarded as one of the higher degrees that require a graduation from the general-ed school with full scores in every subject (it's crazy). If you have graduated from the general school and don't have a full score everywhere, you can also work as a nurse assistant or as an ambulance driver for a while to get extra credits, but still the general certificate is mandatory to become a doctor in medicine.
      Here you can get a general certificate later in life as an adult too, with evening classes. But it takes so much time this way. That's why changing paths like this is not advised, unless you are REALLY passionate of achieving that other career.

    The ridiculous, over-the-top incompetence of adults in Miraculous has never bothered me because that's sort of a mainstay of many kids' shows and books, and I think it can be empowering for kids to learn that they have to find their own morality and not just trust that all adults have their best interests at heart, or mindlessly trust authority figures. So it's sort of a genre thing that I think just requires some easy suspension of disbelief. But the part where Marinette took apart a portable bathroom and manually installed her own electronically controlled switchable glass mirror kills a person's suspension of disbelief because it goes against the understood "contract" between the show and the audience of a program like this -- that the hero is using clever solutions that a kid could really pull off.
    As far as I can tell, regular "switchable glass" -- the kind that goes from clear to opaque electronically -- costs maybe $125 _per square foot_ for a small amount like Marinette has. So assuming that's, say, a 2 x 3 mirror (though it looks bigger than that), that's $750 just to buy _regular_ switchable glass. I can't even find pricing online for switchable mirror glass (which does indeed exist!), but I assume it would be even more, given how specialized the technology is. But I also want to know how Marinette got it on such short notice. It's not the kind of thing you can just buy at the hardware store, and transporting glass isn't fast or easy. Plus glass is.... extremely heavy for "normal girl with a normal life" Marinette to just be carrying around?
    I could've bought into this if they'd said that Max was in on Marinette's plan, because Max is apparently a supergenius, and maybe he could make switchable mirror glass in a pinch for Marinette, cut exactly to the dimensions of the portable bathroom, I guess. But nope -- apparently Marinette did this all on her own. Ah, well.

Let me tell you about the case of Treva Thornberry, a woman who spent most of her twenties pretending to be an abused teenage girl who was taken in by many compassionate families. She also made several false accusations of being sexually assaulted by grown men; many of which were disproven due to alibis or witnesses, which caused her to get found out. And after she was found out, she would flee, pop up somewhere else in America, and repeat. She was eventually arrested in 2001.
    And after what we've seen, I can say Lila is based on Thornberry, except she decided to stay in the same city the whole time, which is very risky and stupid.

I feel her friendship with Chloe is more sincere than people think because with Chloe she gets to be her true villainous self and doesn't have to pretend to be who she pretended to be to everyone else. We shall see where they go with her from here. One thing is clear from what I have seen of Collusion and Revolution: Lila/Cerise/Iris will have a much bigger role starting in season six and that could mean that the writing for her will improve. I feel like this episode (and the next one as well) has a lot of concept vs execution problems.
    In concept, this execution is great: Sabrina is being pushed too far by Chloe and Lila, so she helps Marinette set up a trap to expose Lila and Chloe for who they realy are. It works, but Lila sets up the next stage of her villain story.
    However, the execution of the episode was very poor: Chloe and Lilas plan to fake the career forms is stupid and should never have worked with miss Bustier and the other staff knowing the class well enough; Marinettes plan with the porter potty is also super ridiculous; Lilas way of just walking away after she's been expelled and just randomly becomming a new person is even more ridiculous.
    I get that they need to move the plot forward for the finale, but to do it in such an unrealistic and ridiculous way, even for Miraculous standards, is very disapointing to me

Her character finally got some development that she needed ages ago. She had very minimal development prior to Confrontation (only a little in Evillustrator, Darkblade, Anti-bug and Penalteam). She is a victim of being taken advantage of by others (kinda like her father) who were able to prey on her low self-esteem to satisfy their own means. What she accomplished in this episode alone was a very good and well rounded redemption arc when taking into account her position and the people she's been around. She sacrificed her only constant friendship with Chloe to stop the lives of other people from being ruined (even though the way that Chloe and Lila got that much power and responsibility over their peers is weird).

      Let me clarify for you: Marinette gets a phone call from Sabrina informing her Chloe and Lila are forcing her to forge documents to fuck up everyone's futures. Marinette, being the rich crafty girl she is tells her how it's going to go down. They meet with Sabrina's father, the chief of police, to explain their plan. The girl's bathroom conveniently goes "out of order" and a temporary porta potty is installed. Marinette installs the mic, camera, 2 way mirror, and informs Sabrina. The mic, camera, and glass remain DORMANT! I'll repeat, remain DORMANT until the day of turning in the applications. Once the plan is in motion and Lila, Chloe, and Sabrina take off to the bathroom, Marinette activates the camera and mic. So yeah, while a morally gray plan, it was necessary as the alternative would mean everyone's lives would be screwed just because some assholes have it in for Marinette. While the charm shield moment with Damocles was epic in the moment, after giving it some thought, it comes off as a really poor scene, mostly because there was no buildup.
    The scene would’ve been WAY stronger if we actually saw Marinette try to find a counter to the Megakuma ever since it was introduced in Dearest Family, perhaps she and Alya could’ve searched through the ancient book to find a solution instead of Ladybug just handing out more. It could’ve even been the b-plot for a few episodes, letting us know that she was at least trying. Plus, with Gabe having most of the miraculous this season, it would’ve made a ton of sense for her to attempt to upgrade the charms as less akumatizations allows less opportunities to capitalize on his advantage.
    Now that they’ve introduced this concept of emotions increasing the charm’s protection, the writers better not drop the ball with it.

    Gotta be honest, when I first saw the trailer for this episode I thought that Juleka had gotten akumatized because she received a letter that said that something had happened to Luka while he was abroad
    And that the actual reason for her akuma was just her repeating the year felt a little disappointing
    I mean sure, repeating year unjustly sucks, but this is her *brother*
    Her *twin brother* who was forced to leave Paris to who knows where doing who knows what
    If that happened to me, of course I’d be worried sick constantly for him. And if I learned something had happened to him, I’d be devastated
    It would’ve made more sense and it would also serve for more Luka content even if he was forced to remain offscreen and would continue the plot point of him no longer being in Paris
    Because just because he can no longer be physically present in the series, doesn’t mean he can’t still be in the show in the form of a mention or something like that

A world where the teachers and the principal looks the other way when a student relentlessly bullies other students terrifying them then punishes the victim instead of the bully, a world where they reelect a mayor who is compromised multiple times because of his daughter, a world where friends and bff's refuse to believe when a friend says another student is a compulsive liar and professional manipulator even with evidence from heroes day slapped them in the face but conveniently forget that fact, a world where the writers and drawers are not consistent with facts from previous episodes for example Adrien knew Ladybug saved his childhood friend Chloe in Origins 2 and in Lady WiFi Adrien thought Chloe might be Ladybug no wonder people think Adrien's light bulb is dim but he is smarter than most of them in Desperada he told Ladybug he tried to save her for months 25,915 times he has a memory like a steal trap who else could remember that?! The drawers can't even keep his bedroom and door entrance in the same place it's as if they are fighting over constructive design they need to take notes and be professional with the design and what is said and done and stop giving the characters whiplash when shaking their head like in Migration I thought Bob's head came loose from his spine. In my most honest opinion, Lila's lies should have been done and done with by the season 3 episode 'Ladybug' where it's purpose had been defeated since she had lied about having a lying disease just to get Marinette out of expulsion__courtesy of Adrien's pressuring. I mean surely their whole class and probably the whole school would have heard about the little defect of Lila to avoid future problems right?
    Getting every other character dumbed down aside for the main protagonists isn't really a good quality any character especially an antagonist should be having since they would soon be promoted to main antagonist, and the fact that her lies had only began to click towards the end since her debut ain't a good thing either. They should have made her main from the start so that the pain of her classmates a.k.a her friends believing her over Marinette would be more bearable and probably better since they wouldn't have suspected her from the start. The principal and the staff are really incompetent and it only gets worse from here.

    this season is crazy and stupid, because the writers decided to solve all the issues from S1-4 in this one season. So now every conclusion is poorly written
    Everything is convenient and way too simple, rushed asf. The whole hero aspect of the show was downgraded a lot, with fights taking like 2 minutes most episodes (despite the fact the villains should totally be worse than ever????)
    This is an incredibly underwhelming way to take down Lila, because she hardly cares. She doesn't even TALK to the others. And the animators or whoever else had the genius idea to remove the scene of Alya apologizing to Marinette, who would've been the only satisfying thing about this

Astruc is 80% of this show's problem and I'm so glad he'll be leaving for good after this season. Jeremy is clearly the more talented out of the two and with him taking over, I expect to see some major positive changes

I like the fact, that Lila and Chloe are finally exposed as liars and Sabrina also finally stood up for herself and not wanted to be the slave of Chloe anymore. But... what is it with the political system in this series? You can't tell me, the Mayor of Paris alone can decide, who to fire and who not. And in the real world, there must be someone higher ranked then him in the political system.
    So if i would be the Director of that school, my comment, everytime Chloe wants me to bow to her father, would be: "Alright. Go tell your Daddy, that you want him to fire me. But if he does that, without consulting his cabinet, i will go straight to his superiour and tell them, what you and your father do in this city. This show has become such a garbage pit for stupid retcons, idiotic and convenient logic, wasted plot lines, static characters, and main character syndrome. It is shocking how a show with so much potential and fan support managed to avoid giving fans any of what they asked for.
    This childish show is still structuring every episode around an attack. Takes up half of the episode to even set that up. Maybe it would have time to actually DEVELOP characters, relationships, and dynamics if it allowed itself to have episodes where less physical action was happening. But, of course, nobody tells Asstruck what to do.
    Honestly, who cares what happens to Marinette or Adrien anymore? They’re already together (and in such a stupid and rushed way too). Felix has been forgiven and allowed to keep the Miraculous despite what he did. The whole Sentimonster plot was set up and then chucked to the wayside, as was the Guardians plot. Su-Han did nothing and then ran for the hills. Alya is barely relevant despite knowing Marinette’s identity. Ditto with Luka.
    They’re no closer to defeating Monarch (the Challenge Rings are bullshit). And no compelling antagonist even exists anymore because they’re never allowed to even be the slightest bit likable or understandable. This show effing sucks.
    Where did Marinette’s fashion interests go? Where did her interests in reading the Grimoire and learning about the Miraculous go? Where did Adrien’s desire for freedom and acting go? Where did Nino’s music interest go? Where did the great dynamic between Chat Noir and Ladybug go? Why don’t they get to spend any time with each other outside of battle anymore?
    Each and every character in this show either went from developing to regressing, or they were never much to begin with. The writers of this show have either become tired or lazy; they don’t seem to care about making this show realistic or properly written or even sensical at all anymore. Even the few triumphant or funny moments can’t make me like it anymore. The Fanfictions are soooo much better.

      Also they didn't record it did they ?
      So it's just like when other people saw Chloe do crummy things it's her word against their's and the class are nobodies so no one would care what they say and Adrien wouldn't say anything unless he thinks he's already lost it all.
      Also "if" Gabe actually dies couldn't Adrien just ask his Aunt to help him process emancipation paperwork and move back to Paris himself.

    Speaking on the French education system, this is in fact how they choose what high school to go to. In fact miraculous actually has a much more casual relationship between students and teachers than the norm in France. Their teachers have to approve the forms to see if their grades and behavior through out collége (6th-9th grade) is good enough for them to go to that school. Most high school however are still general with classes in every subject but sometimes there’s a student who wants a more specific education and goes to a trade school for example. At the end of grade 10 the student picks a specialization which is essentially like a university major and that dictates what they study for 11th and 12th grade

    I was educated by the french school system and yeah, it does work like that...
    You can ask to retake a year (but normally that's the decision of your parents at least at that age).
    I believe Marinette is in 3ème (9grade or 10 year). The only difficulty at that year is one exam at the end of the year ("Brevet"), to finish the obligatory education. She is ending her "collège" (middle school or junior high). Anyone from then on could potentially work if they want.
    If not, then the decision they have to do is to enter "lycée" or high school. I can't really talk for all the schools in France (lived aboard with limited access to all the possibilities), but the potential choice they're making is to have a special education related to their interest. My school was general, so that ramification came one year later. You could choose between three choices: S - Scientific, L - Literature or ES - Economy and Social studies. Said "specialties" were for two years and were not really definitive. You only would have more subjects related to said fields and always had the possibility to change.
    That choice would really mattered if you wanted to study something really specific. Universities would more likely accept your application if you came from a related background. (There's also a kind of hierarchy, like if you took S you still could apply and easily get to another unrelated field...)
    And yesss the class rep is the one who defend your interest but that is also the job of the main teacher, in the reunion at the end of every trimester.
    Class representative would talk to you personally the day after, to explain the main points of said reunion, and what other teachers said about your performance.
    The teacher would later talk to your parents other day, with or/and without you.

    • @mine_neko
      @mine_neko Рік тому

      Also adding, the class representatives are kind of definitive after the election for the school year 😅
      Also note that repeating one year is mostly done when you need better grades to choose a "filière" (S, L, ES). I've never seen other cases really...

    1:40 : I'm french, our school system is like this. I don't know what else to say, but yes, they do expect us to know what to do as adults at 13-14 y.o (it's almost never the case, we don't know). At 14 I "wanted" to be a teacher because my mom said I would be good at it, teachers said I should pursue studies in the language field as I was the best student from my year and I wanted to get more money than my mom so I could help her as an adult. It wasn't about what I wanted, because I was a kid, and I ended up following for years this path thinking it was my choice when it has been what others wanted from me since then all along.
    Really, asking young teens what they want to do, pressuring them to know right now, to choose right now... I think it's not a good idea, and I was one of the people this system did hurt (not that bad next to some other students, but still, I lost years in a field people told me to follow as a teen because that what I thought I should do, not understanding that I should have always thought about what I wanted, even if the answer was "I don't know for now, I need to experiment much more things before")
    The reality isn't as drastic as in Miraculous Ladybug, like... reorientation is a thing, and there are studies you can do without closing to much doors for yourself if you're not sure. But it's still very close, and even in highschool you're expected to narrow down once again what you want to really study even though you're 15-16. It's a tad bit more dramatic than reality, but it's actually still close.

The overall idea of framing Marinette for something so drastic - I guess it wasn't so believable in execution, but it was still a step up from Chloé's solo MO in any case... On top of last time, where Lila as Hoaxer was actually quite fun to see, especially in how she schemed against Gabriel too
    In any case... I've actually been mildly impressed by S5 in some ways. I really thought the reversed love square was going to be a long-term thing, but they actually (loosely) resolved the romantic tension. Even when it inevitably breaks apart, there's still that gratification of seeing Marinette and Adrien doing things together, at least for me. It's the sort of stuff I would usually like to see in S2 or S3 of a show, just a shame it took so long to get here...

    I feel like the dumbest thing in this episode is just the education system. It’s so weird. Why do the teachers decide which school the students go to with discussion from 2 students. And also, why don’t the parents and students get a say? Why couldn’t this be sorted out in a PTM or better yet: In a letter to the school they want to go to? I feel like it should be that instead. Hell, the episode could still make sense with this system, maybe they have to fill out application forms to the school they want to go to which includes information like grades and shit but then Lila and Chloe sabotage the forms like they did in the episode and they get admitted to schools they didn’t want to get into or no school at all

    The show writers don't know how studied abroad or how to get to schools in other countries actually work. If that's your plot script for an episode you should look it up.

    I think marinette would be likely forgoven given the fact lila threwten to expel multiple students. In mari's case multiple times.

    Ok, so i asked about the class rep defending their classmates future thing, and apparently it is actually a thing in french (surprising)
    Anyway, we waited 5 seasons for Lila to be exposed, only to have her walk out the school without any backlash or consequences. Totally worth waiting
    Then Sabrina. She either got really thick skin or thick skull or just overall thick plot convenience that just now she finally snapped.
    Then Damocles and Bustier. Who am i kidding, those two are a joke
    So yeah, a totally worth watching episode. Soooo worth it
