10:24 That shot (no pun intended) is so blunt and effectively composed it was seared into my brain since I first saw this film randomly on TV while waiting to go out. The whole might of their army, the pomp and circumstance, turned against three innocent men. It's a gut punch.
Same here. I first saw it on the big screen and that scene totally caught me off guard. Genuinely moving. Says so much about war with a song and with faces.
great analyses. Tim used to train his dogs right behind my house and because his daughter was my classmate he was at my confirmation and 2 graduations.
Not going to lie. I love this movie but you made me see it in a deeper level. Or perhaps made me realize why it is one of my favourite movies. I actually shed tiers at the end.
Thanks for catching an important detail I've missed until now. Dax unable to come to the rescue is an unanticipated punch in the gut. Kubrick would do this again in The Shining. The hero in this film (the only hope we think there is) is gone in moments. And this, as you point out, is very non-Hollywood.
Kubrick was truly a genius artist. The final scene is so unexpected and so moving. No dialogue or epilogue needed. All the performances are very good but something about Timothy Carey is fascinating to me. I understand he was a nightmare to work with though!
Great analysis. One thing I wondered after watching the films and any other stories with a similar premise. You are sent to unjust death maybe you should take it with dignity buy why should you take it quietly? Maybe it is futile to fight it but why make it easy? Even if you can convince one person of the injustice of it , isn't it worth it? Edit: I know easier said than done but still if you could.
From Kirk Douglas' autobiography "The Ragman's Son": I met the director, Stanley Kubrick. He said he had a script called PATHS OF GLORY. I read the script and fell in love with it. "Stanley, I don't think this picture will ever make a nickel, but we HAVE to make it." I got financing. It wasn't easy. When I arrived in Munich, I was greeted with a completely rewritten script. "Stanley, did you write this?" "Yes." "Stanley, why would you do that?" He very calmly said, "To make it commercial. I want to make money." I hit the ceiling. "You come to me with a script. I love THAT script. I got the money, based on THAT script. Not this shit!" I threw the script across the room. "We're going back to the original script, or we're not making the picture."
What's perhaps most appalling is that Paths of Glory is based on a true story: the Souain Corporals Affair. The general ordering artillery to shell his own trenches to force the men to attack, and the execution of four random men from a formation that refused to go over the top....actually happened in real life. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souain_corporals_affair
"KYIV - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wanted to give his military a shakeup by appointing General Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief: many of his troops reacted with despair. “Syrskyi will kill us all,” said one soldier, who like others in this story spoke on condition of being granted anonymity." - Politico, February 9, 2024
"On the evening of 28 July, soldiers from the 80th Brigade contacted Ukrainska Pravda with a rather sudden request for us to publish an appeal in support of their then commander, Colonel Emil Ishkulov, who was facing dismissal. All that was known about this command decision was that Ishkulov, who respects the military hierarchy, had refused to carry out a task set by Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He said it was disproportionate to the human resources of the brigade. A couple of days later, on 6 August, it became clear exactly what Ishkulov had refused to do when Ukrainian forces - including the 80th Brigade, under the leadership of a new commander, Pavlo Rozlach - went on a raid into Russian territory." If WW1 occurred 10 years later say in 1924-1928 it would of have been different. 19th Century Politicians & Generals Started and Ran this war. A whole new generation would have shown more restraint and wisdom at the least don't Create a Domino Effect treaties that just waits for a event to light the War. Combined Arms would take the whole war to finally figure it out and by then millions too Many paid the ultimate price. The Sgt. Escorting the Three men to Execution summed it up " before this war is over we will be joining you."
This is a bad take on Paths of Glory, quite possibly Kubrick’s best film. Don’t let David Simon ever see this video, he’s gonna destroy you and so I’ll leave it to chance whether or not that happens, but if it does you’ll inevitably have to “stand tall and take it like a man.” So empty…LOL

As a former solider and history buff, I really appreciate the statement " unfortunately, governments and armies are run by men like Mireau".
Love this. Paths of Glory is basically my favorite movie of all time.
where did you seen the movie? i cant find it
@@simonmendos4323I think its on amazon prime
I always cry like a baby with the last scene with the German song. To this day, I never even knew why

Kubrick is my.hero in cinema. We just can't praise him highly enough.

Terrific video, really enjoyed it. What a film this is, one of my favourites.

Thank you for exploring one of my favorite films. I do very much enjoy your essays.
One of my absolute favorites. Great analysis.
Brilliant analysis of one of my favorite movies. Thank you

Excellent observations

Yeah, agreed
You pull hard wisdom out of this masterpiece

good film
I have this on VHS ! Awesome movie !!
Really good movie. I also did an analysis about this movie.

This film, along with Fight Club, I saw too early in life. Take the blue pill and do your job.
this movie is about Class Struggle, duh
No wonder Jesus rejected power and had to admit to submission to God.
Power not a great thing

Why would he destroy this video's argument?
Have you seen Come and See?
He just did
