Vancouver has a lot of rezoning and redevelopment. The business probably had a 5 year lease and either the landlord increase rent a lot or tell business owner to leave due to rezoning. In the past, businesses had 5 year lease and then renewed every 5 years. Now, after 5 years lease ends, the business is either expected to pay significantly higher commercial rent or move elsewhere.
Airbnb is expensive. Rent in Vancouver and surrounding areas is costly, especially with market rent vs. the people who pay much lower due to rent protection staying in one home for a long time.
@@chaileeyang Vancouver is expected to get more expensive. 10 years ago, it was 5 friends got together to rent the entire single family home split each person would pay $500 each and able to spend time with people they liked. Now similar home would be closer to $1000 a person split. If people wanted to go home, they went home after 1-2 years and if they wanted to stay in Canada, it was not hard to get further education and start a stable career and eventually start a family if they choose to. Nowadays, room share houses have more rules, squeeze more people in same space and living with strangers. To live well in Vancouver and stay to make a good life often come with a plan one or more of the following: bring money to spend, experienced hire in a career, having US or Asia clients and owning a successful small business, working remote for US company, or married well. Otherwise people combined their finances with someone else / shared expenses or one has to work 2-3 jobs until it affects one's health or suffer burnout. For myself, work for a few years in the US after UBC in order to buy a home in BC or very difficult with local salary if you don't buy with someone else (e.g. gf/bf or spouse or friend) or via inheritance. I noticed a lot more people going back home compared to pre-covid especially if one is not able to break into a career that can provide a sustainable lifestyle. I hope that you come again and next time the city is still undergoing rapid changes as it grows. If not, Vancouver is still a beautiful place to visit.
