How The Minnesota Timberwolves Built A Championship Contender
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 січ 2025
- The Minnesota Timberwolves are fresh off their first conference finals appearance since 2004 and probably their second most successful season in franchise history. And this feels kind of weird to say because for most of the time I have watched the NBA the Timberwolves have not been good whatsoever. Today we take a look back at how the Minnesota Timberwolves built the championship contender they have today.

If I remember correctly, one big reason the wolves didn’t draft Steph was it was either Steph or his dad that basically told them Steph didn’t want to play for Minnesota
😭they made the right move
I think I saw an interview some time back where Steph said he didn't really want to play for Golden state either. It'd have been fine if they picked him regardless, probably
@@AustineTheStampede yeah I guess the wolves didn’t want a holdout situation to happen
@@deadshot244that shit almost never happens lol if I was them I would’ve told him fuck what he wants
you know for a fact if steph played in minnesota he wouldnt have developed into a star
You guys are posting so much, it’s great
These guys are so consistent it's incredible. It's the heart of the off-season and they're still dropping weekly gems.
righttt???
Big Al was an automatic 20 and 10 post up player, that has value
I agree he had value, but he was not gonna be a #1 on any team unless you wanted your ceiling to be a 1st round exit.
@@THE_BEAR_JEW the video said you can’t be a playoff team with Big Al in your top 3 players, which was wrong
@@jakewinter2 ah ok. Then you’re right.
Yeah, for like two seasons
You’re underplaying Jefferson a bit. He was a legit low-post beast during an era with less 3s and was averaging a 23-11 on an improving Wolves team before he blew out his knee and they went 7-25 the rest of the way (I recall he was averaging like a 26-12 in the 10-15 games prior to the injury as well). Wolves almost certainly would’ve fared better had they gotten to do the Suns offer of KG for Amare-Marion (KG had a no-trade clause and said he’d veto it), but Jefferson was definitely considered a catch at the time.
Welp, this didnt age well sadly
Been a wolves fan my whole life (not much to cheer for considering in 04 I was 3 years old😂). This past year was so fun, my girlfriend got into watching the games with me and started learning all the players (ofc her favorite is Naz) we actually were at game 6 against Denver for our 1 year anniversary and let me tell you that was one of the greatest experiences of my life and I don’t think I’ve ever heard her yell that damn loud before😂 game 7 I was at my moms with our family watching the game, I will never forget that 17ft fade away from Rudy to cap off a 20 point come back. This past season was by far the greatest season of my Timberwolves fandom… hoping Ant can lead us to many more fun seasons and hopefully even a championship someday!
I have to give them credit, I did NOT expect the Gobert trade to work out
I don’t think anyone did
I even had my doubts as a Wolves fan. What helps them pull it off is KAT and Gobert have two different playing styles as big men
Trash video. Gobert is horrible. MN is not even half as good as Dallas. As soon as Luka got mad and play serious, they blow the heck out of MN easy. It was so easy like high school kids. MN suck and a got in because Denver was expiring. They were the Lakers in 2022 and next year were top 5 worst team.
Not to me… it felt like Gobber was just out there doing his own thing!? Especially in the Playoffs, he was un affective, all they had to do was switch and keep him out of the paint… it made the whole team look bad since the other four players looked confused and dumb every time they did it.
Ant winning finals mvp would feed generations
*Luka winning finals mvp (and MVP) would feed millennials

The same dude that got tired in the middle of the playoffs and you people had the audacity to compare him to MJ LOL
@@r1k1llaz thx
@@jethrojacinto2798every player gets tired in the playoffs lol. he had just finished a intense 7 game series against denver and had to guard kyrie of all people. i think that warrants being tired
Im still waiting for the Yao Ming Houston Rockets video 😢
You guys knowledge of the game is crazy but your humor and conversation really takes it to another level
KAT gone
Al Jefferson disrespect will not be tolerated.
As a matter of fact he wasn’t the “3rd best player on an 8th seed”, he was the 1st best player on an 8th seed…….😭
So was Reggie Jackson (2015-16 Pistons).
@@THE_BEAR_JEW nah more like tie between He, Drummond, and Tobias Harris
@@yodatscrazy981 Tobias got traded to the Pistons like 50 games into the season. I don't know about counting him.
Drummond was not very effective when you needed him. He got rebounds sure, but was he as good as Jackson? No.
@@THE_BEAR_JEW Jackson was a good volume scorer for that time, (even then it was 18ppg) but didn’t provide much of anything else
As good as the Wolves are, it’s till kinda funny that a 57 win conference finals team is arguably their best season ever. I kinda pity Wolves fans, but at least now they have a reasonably young, and very good team.
Wolves may be underrated going into next year.
They'll be like a 4 seed next season, winning 55 games (the west will be loaded with (Memphis, Dallas, OKC) teams that got better. Likely they'll meet joker in round 1 and it'll go to 6 or 7 games
Still a relatively young franchise too
@@Jamelliii think denver is going to be quite a bit worse next year, especially since they lost kcp
@@Jamelliijoker? Lmao 🤣 stop it
Always a good day when synthetic sports uploads
Ain't no way you guys forgot about drafting a steal in Terrence Shannon Jr.
Too early to tell on that. He does look like an absolute steal so far, though.
Minnesota Timberwolves and Detriot Lions being a competent franchise at the same time doesnt seem real
and the Florida Panthers haha
no mention of tsj? he was insane in college and played amazing in summer league
Him and Naz Reid are going to feed families
Al Jefferson disrespect was unncessary boss, he was a bucket and one of the best centers of his era...some of the best footwork of this generation
True, but Jefferson was more of a second or third option. That man should've been an All-Star a few times, at least, though.
i think the reason we traded all those picks for gobert was because danny ainge wanted Mcdaniels so connelly added two extra picks instead
Welp nice wile it lasted
6:44 it did not in fact pay off 😂
Curry's daddy literally told the Wolves not to draft him because he didn't want to be there.
As a Twolves fan this video made me laugh and cry in pain remembering those late 2000s early 2010s. Unfortunately I am to young to remember those KG days, thank god were back to winning though
Terrance Shannon JR was a steal for them in the draft. Don’t be surprised if he’s a rookie who gets real minutes this season.
Rob Dillingham too
They obviously need to change something, cause it definitely ain't enough to win a championship yet. Even if they go on a run and make out the west, Boston ain't gonna play around. I am not even a Celtics fan, but i would be surprised if they won't repeat. And for the T Wolves, Kat is just way too inconsistent for a 2nd option on a team that wants to win.
yeah i agree about the kat aspect. honestly with their defense, the development of the two picks they made this draft, and ant being ant they could compete in the finals
also ny is going to beat boston
@@rickysoup seek help
@@rickysoupit’s gonna take a year to gel together 2026 I could see it, Boston is too good
I think they match up to Boston’s better then the mavs in my opinion
To be fair to Rubio he came out of the gates strong and the Wolves even had an above 500 record at one point with him running the point but he tore his ACL his rookie season but still even with a torn ACL he did became a super solid player in the league
I feel like we need an Ant montage of him with a gi and a bandanna climbing a mountain to train with the top masters and learn the techniques and prove himself. We’ll see what him being around the greats this past Olympics and winning gold has taught him.
So funny them commending Kat, then he gets traded right after the vid 😂😂
Act like the Gobert move is an over pay all you want, but you cannot deny the value this guy brought to the wolves
I hated Rudy when he played for the Jazz so I get it, but goddamn if it isn’t annoying that the narrative around overpaying him won’t go away. The Wolves could win the Finals next year and the sports bros will still act like it was an overpay.
Still is an overpay lol could’ve gotten him at a way better price because you’re eventually gonna have to pay ant naz and Jaiden again lol
great video guys big ups from Greece
JUST IN TIME FOR LUNCH AGAIN!!!! SO CLUTCH!!!!
Synthetic Sports making another TWolves video⁉️ I’m in heaven
No one knew Step would be this good + his dad didn't wanted timberwolves to draft him. JONNY was injured!
If I was a Timberwolves fan, my biggest fear would be the mavs for sure, they clearly didn't have the personel to deal with Luka and Kyrie unlike Boston. The additon of small rob dillingham doesn't fix there issues either.
Don’t know why they kept playing drop coverage against them lmao. It was basically 2v2 in the paint and the mavs still have the best game closers and more experience.
Honestly, that was one of the most ironic series I've ever seen. The Wolves were basically built to defeat anyone... until Luka and Kyrie basically took them apart damn near by themselves.
And KAT gotta be more consistent
@@urbaindelva7869 the three series of Dener vs Minisota, Minnesota vs Dallas, then Dallas vs Boston were so interesting in terms of matchups and how teams countered other's strenghts while exploiting weaknesses
if kat was more consistent it would’ve been a lot closer. they lost most the games by single digits even though their first and second options pretty much disappeared
6:42 oof. 🤣
And KAT is outta there! 😂 i hope they didn’t make a mistake… I def think this was a great trade for the Knicks! It makes sense for the Knicks since they didn’t want to resign Randle? Since he can’t mesh with Bruns…

The year 2090 naz reid becomes president
Ben Wallace the greatest undrafted player IMO

id love a miami heat video on how weird the jimmy butler era has been
To be fair to the Wolves on passing Steph is because he didn’t want to go to Minnesota or Minnesota didn’t apoint guard like Steph because they drafted a Russ or DRose type player with Johnny Flynn and a Luka before Luka player named Ricky Rubio
I can never be mad at the Curry draft thing because we would have absolutely fucked up his development or traded him during his early career injury problems
Hot take: when healthy Anthony Davis is the best Anthony in the league
It’s weird seeing the Suns, Wolves & Kings not be garbage
Feel like it wasn't so clear that ANT was supposed to be the #1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft as this segment states. If my memory serves correctly, there were questions about whether he even enjoyed basketball and, I think most draft scouts listed Dion Waiters as his his closes comp heading into that draft.
Y'all should continue with the "when they took over the finals" series
16:37 the team who the assistant coach works for has to say you can hire him before he can work the you
NOT AT ALL😂😂😂😂
They have great defense, but the offense was inconsistent at times, and Edwards had to do a lot at times. In my opinion, Towns, along with Jaden McDaniels and Conley, was inconsistent on offense. Do the Timberwolves need to fix the bench?
Kat gets so much hate but shout out Kat ngl
Timberwolves should bring back Patrick Beverly.
That clip of Luka callin Gobert a mf made my morning 😅😅😅
Crazy how, for all the haters, KAT really has been the primary fixture during the rebuild that the team is finally finishing now. He wasn’t the transcendent guy who can really take a franchise from the bottom to the top by himself, but he’s been a consistent star and class act for an otherwise dysfunctional franchise. Major respect to KAT.
Also - not my city so not my fight, but Minneapolis is a banger of a city. The cold sucks, but, as someone originally from the south, I’d trade not being able to go outside during Jan/Feb with not being able to go outside during July/Aug any day.
2:58 They traded Roy for Foy??😂
I'd like if they win a championship soon
The Gobert trade at the time was questionable to say the least, but saying its an overpay now is just a lie because you're not only getting a 4x DPOY, but you're getting a guy who will instill a defensive mindset in the players
Naz Reid has said he didn't like playing defense until Rudy taught him and now he loves it. Ant has taken the defensive mindset to heart and has made it a core part of his game. Even KAT learned how to effectively defend against bigs in large part because Gobert is able to teach others how to be motivated to play defense
I will forever love pat bev timberwolves legend
The TSJ mention where?? You do relaize hes gonna be a monster off the bench with max and rob like our bench is going to be so good this year even better more offense which is what we need so badly. Y’all will see we gonna be even better this year
not hearing any more ant mj talk until he doesnt flame out in the conference finals against the celtics punching bag
Jahlil Okafer reminded me alot of Big Al Jefferson
The part about Al Jefferson is not true he was the best player on our team for two or three seasons the team sucks but he carried I've been to so many different eras of Timberwolves games
Rubio was really good. He just couldn't stay healthy.
Without watching the video, they got 2 first overall picks 5 years apart.
Here after Kat left for New York 😭😭😭
This is my kind of video🌝 (I’m a timberwolves fan)
Lets GOOOOO 26 min vid!!!
Rob Dillingham & Terrance Shannon will be big this year wolves desperately needed additional scoring with naw & conley both struggling to give them more offense vs Dallas the hope is at some point dill becomes a garland type guy maybe even develops into a better player to be that legit #2 all due respect to Kat but multiple playoffs runs now where he's a ghost in about 40% of the games if he plays better that Dallas series goes 7 & they might even of advanced they just didn't enough for the role players even Rudy was kinda disappointing especially on defense in the wcf . Still think Kat is likely to be gone after this year barring wolves winning the title or at the a finals appearance especially if he not showing up most night in the playoffs
Bro you really picked the worse pictures of Minnesota, to show why it sucks. Minnesota is beautiful respect it Zach Levine
The uncomfortable laughter after the politically joke😂😂😂
Thibs was also the President of Basketball Operations. That’s why he was fired, because of minimal results as a coach and absolutely awful contracts and trades.
Towns must go if the TWolves strive to be a championship contender.
Towns is a postseason net-negative contributor, low basketball IQ decision-maker and unplayable in over 40% of his postseason games
Wolves - Knicks 2025 Finals
The way they beat the nuggets I can't believe they arent champions right now
They were built to beat only that team. That's why luka and Kyrie dissected them despite the team being slightly worse than the nuggets
@@Sway1215 I think it was the gameplan and Edwards/Towns disappearing
@@Sway1215 this ^^ and they were GASSED. The defense was lazy. KAT was off. Naz Reid and Jaden McDaniels was pretty much the only ones who showed up. It looked like they were just happy to be there, not even motivated to win smh Luka and Kyrie COOKED and Jason Kidd tore them apart... all the alley opps
@@t.yskrilla9008wolves may have beat the Mavs if they finished off Denver early. Ant took a hard fall in the middle of the series and you can see his production went down after that. Most of those games in the WCF were pretty close and could have gone either way which is why I think the wolves can beat them next time.
@Serching4JerryGarcia Ant would never come to being injured, but KAT recently came out and said that coming back from that knee procedure late in the year was brutal in the playoffs and that definitely caught up with him against the Mavs.
As a wolves fan this the most I've ever believed in them even with kg never thought they were legit contenders now having a top 10 ish player but also having a good roster feels great if we weren't so bad at drafting before this rebuild don't last as long as it did but I'd rather have ant over any of the guys we didn't draft I just thank the basketball gods we didn't draft Wiseman shoutout to him for refusing to play here 😂😂😂that would of been tragic
Dillingham is a smart pickup. I love Mike Conley, but he's getting up there in age. And Ant can play defense, so you don't have two defensive liabilities in the backcourt
They got a good upside
Cant believe the warriors passed up on him and lamelo lol
In fairness to Miami Jimmy is aging and I doubt paying him out to get another 8th seed playoff slugfest is the best idea. Idk what the hell the Wolves and 76ers were thinking though. If the 76ers had kept Bridges and Jimmy they'd be a very big problem in the East.
i still get sick to my stomach whenever i think of us drafting ricky rubio AND jonny flynn over steph curry
I’m not a T-Wolves fan but they got really unlucky missing the playoffs in 05 going 44-38. I feel like that messed up their chances
Next video suggestion : one of lebron most underrated games ever : ECF gm6 2018, or how the okc build a championship contender.
believe it or not its literally all naz reid. unironically the most essential member of the Twolves RN

In actuality this team can only go as far as gobert and kat can take it which has its ceiling 🤷♂️

I feel like it's to early to call them contenders, they barely beat an injured Nuggets squad and then got demolished in 5 by a injured Luka. Ant still needs to mature and honestly I don't think KAT is a good enough 2nd option if you're trying to win a championship.
"injured" Luka isnt a good way to put it. It was more "my leg hurts but I can still put up 256 ppg"
“Demolished” bro every game was one possession until the last 2 mins. Except the last game. Wolves will be more prepared this time you’ll see
They were and still are a contender until they get bounced.
Have the number 1 pick 3 times in 10 years probably helps….
