One of the things that makes this so heartbreaking is that you almost expect him to be making some sort of fetishistic scrapbook. Something like what Van Alden would do with Margaret, particularly since Richard has such a clearly damaged psyche. Yet you see that all he fantasizes about is love, the pure kind that a family would provide. Not a word said and I tear up every time I see this.

@@iseehowitis9382 they're all murderers... Its a show made in which you are made to sympathize with and root for all these murderers. So that's beside the point.
The point is that Harrow is a scarred man, who would probably NOT be a murderer and in a very different place, if circumstances hadn't brought him to this life.
A lot of people were damaged in WWI and brought that trouble back with them once the war was over. Why do you think you see such a jump in heinous crimes in the 20's and 30's? Men trained to be capable to kill and maim returned from a war sometimes with nothing to return to, became vagrants, or criminals. That's the point of the scene, that Harrow wouldn't be here in another life. He is what his world made him.

Archetypally he's close to pristine. He embodies the type of man that men wish they were and women wish they were with: stoic, kind, loyal, brave, upright etc. He's a tragic figure, but his suffering and how he bears it is what makes him so attractive to the audience, and almost holy.

The great thing is that he gets his wish, under random circumstances of course. His friend and friend's wife are killed so he becomes a father figure to their son Tommy, and he develops a relationship with a fellow veteran's daughter in Julia Sagorsky. It's an awkward family photo *literally* but it's awesome for Richard.

This is a gutwrenchingly sad scene, especially since it's so similar to the real life Henry Darger; a lonely man who made an entire 15,000 page book out of paper scraps and cheap paints. Nobody even discovered his amazing body of work until shortly before he died, while they were cleaning out his old apartment. It so easily could have been lost to time.

the thing is though, the last scene you see of Richard is him leaving Tommy at Julia's house after his killing spree, and telling the father something like "Be safe. That's what's important" then leaving. I think that means that it's no longer about his disfigurement being an obstacle for his dream of having a family, but it's more about the sort of life that he leads getting in the way of him keeping his newfound family. I mean look what happened to Jimmy and Angela.

You can sort of know he is longing for a relationship or normalcy when he has that dream running on the beach with Odette, but this scene goes so much deeper into that desire for a family. Richard is obviously a dangerous man, but only when he has to be. I've yet to see a random, pointless killing committed by him.

All of my uncles served in WW2 as well. The eldest, get this was a driver for Capone's gin runs from Chicago to Canada and back. My older brother visited him one day and my uncle brought him to his attic and show him two mint condition Thompsons with the circular clips still fully loaded. He told my brother that he had one "chopper" in trucks ceiling and the other machine gun on the door on the driver side.

@Tracy137 Haha right? Margaret and the one and only expression she ever has in the world; the eyebrows creased, eyes wide "Woe is me," look. LMAO.

@ViceCityVacation I did suffer from depression for a while, but I had two strokes and that made me realise life was too short to sit and whine. I fought back, recovered better than the docs said I would and I love life now....or rather I love to laugh at it. Your mother sounds a very cool lady. Well, I certainly like to leave people laughing and I'm glad I made you smile - it's better for the wrinkles. ;O)

A Marine OIF Veteran myself, I identify with the character on many levels his morals or lack thereof notwithstanding. Therefore you may now have a better insight as to why earlier i stated i do not believe his characters to be a psychopath nor sick.He is methodical and emotions have little use to him. Some civilians have a difficult time understanding the methodical and deceptive nature of warfare.Harrow positively encapsulates the melancholy, emotionally distant mind of a veteran in peacetime.

@ViceCityVacation well, you're sweet and very kind. :O) I LOVE to kid around, keeps me sane(ish). I don't mind talking about my wheels. The wheelchair is my friend, as I have severe arthritis and walking is.....difficult. Think of a penguin on speed - my family even sing the pingu theme (it's on here I think)....VERY funny. rofl. Still if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at? Besides I have fun with my wheels; oh the stories I could tell. ;O)

@Tracy137 You're right; we would see a different side to him. I think we saw flashes of that side during certain interactions he had with Margaret and Angela; he opened himself up to them just the slightest bit at certain points, allowed emotion to show. But really, most of the time, he just goes through the motions of living. Of course, he has so much post-traumatic stress (people didn't know about it back then!:/) so I can only imagine what goes on in his head.

Richard Harrow is not an evil man because he doesn’t exist as a man. Harrow is a bad idea.

@faboul467 noo the actor who plays richard is really gorgeous and it doesn't matter if Richard hims self had scares his beauty still shines through. I don't understand how women cannot see it. I mean yes it's jarring to see at first but even Jimmy's wife got used to the scares. IF you actually sit and talk with him you won't even notice them anymore because you paying attention him as a man. Every one is flawed!!! At least he got them from fighting for his country. :) I stan for Jim and Rich!!

@Tracy137 I always disliked Raoul too!! Like, even when I was 7 and saw the opera for the first time, I was so MAD when she didn't choose the phantom. I basically wanted Raoul out of the picture from the get-go, haha, and I hardly even knew what love was. You've had two strokes, that has got to be a challenge. I'm a nurse, and while I don't work on a stroke flooor, I can appreciate what that does to your body and mind. I think your philosophy on life is fantastic (don't hate, etc).
