  • There's nothing quite live a stunning live-cam to capture the mic of a Dimash performance. Flawless rendition of Qairan Elim, a song like no other, in the singer's native Kazakh language.
By the way, thank you for pointing out the kobyz has TWO strings, not three. I've clipped out the reference.

Dimash is a very deep person, his inner wisdom, intelligence, sincerity and honesty are all reflected in his music. This is known and felt by everyone who follows the work and life of this wonderful artist. Superficial viewers will notice nothing but his high notes.
But there is much more in him than high notes. His vocal range is only a superficial part of all his music and creations.
And the one who doesn't want to dig deeper can't see anything else.

Hello William, nice to be here. I hardly watch any reactors nowadays but I fell for your obvious knowledge and ability to express your emotions and perception. You did not post the link to the original video, this is probably from the Prague concert earlier this year. I was lucky enough to attend the Düsseldorf concert a week prior and could hear it live from 1st row. It was my 4th soloconcert by Dimash since I found him in late 2017. I can highly recommend experience him live. He usually gives us 3 hours of amazing vocals and himself, baring his heart for all of us.
If you are residing in Bangkok you should be aware there wilm be a concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, june 24th 2023! Usually we get less than 2 months of advertising a new concert. The Malay concert is postponed from earlier this year. Tickets starts selling december 11th. Now you know what to wish for as christmas gift 😉!
I am looking forward to follow your journey as a Dear. Cheers from Sweden!

The unusual bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the prototype of all European string instruments.
(Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages. Difference between Turkic and Turkish - ua-cam.com/video/PqxhtBecVeg/v-deo.html
A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music.
The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing the Kobyz.

    Dear William,
Thank you so much for yet another wonderful reaction to Dimash! You’ve become a true Dear. You really do understand and appreciate Dimash, both the artist and the individual, as well as his music. As I already wrote in one of my previous comments, being anchored in his roots, heritage, and tradition is at the very core of who Dimash is as an individual. Whenever he can, he always puts his Kazakh culture at the forefront. It’s been a childhood dream of his to show and promote his proud culture and heritage to the whole world.
What I love about Dimash is that he does not use his vocal abilities to show off, but to serve the song: through his voice, he’s telling us a story. But above all, what I really love about Dimash is that he has not retreated from his humbleness due to his rising fame: he has remained a steadfastly down-to-earth person, anchored in his roots. Kudos to him for being so well-grounded in this age of shallowness.
Likewise, what I love about you, Dear William, is your sincerity and beautiful heart, which is why I value your insight; but also your musical expertise, being the knowledgeable, talented vocal coach and artist yourself.
I’ve been following Dimash’s career and vocal, artistic evolution for the past five years. To me, he’s more than a vocal genius and a musical prodigy, or a soulful artist with a vision: he’s a genuine, kind-hearted, generous, well grounded, and humble young man. His family, friends, and teachers only confirm that truthful impression of him that we have through his interviews and behavior on and off stage.
He’s the most passionate Ambassador that Kazakhstan could ever have. He has indeed introduced the Kazakh culture and language to the world. His voice and his music resonate with millions of us on both an emotional, and spiritual levels. I’m grateful for the positive impact that Dimash has in our lives.
Thank you so much William for sharing his music and talent for the world to see!

I know what you mean when you say some people say he's all flashy showman and high notes. They don't know him at all. One critic commented under a reaction video that Dimash is a perfect singing automaton and it just didn't move him. I'm like - you haven't listened to enough of him then!

It's so good to see you, William. Whenever a Dimash song begins with the kobyz on stage, I know that we're about to have a sacred, mystical experience. To me, Dimash's voice more closely replicates the sound of the kobyz than any other instrument - the timbre, vibrato, and resonance. The sound of the kobyz is so organic, you hear the single piece of wood from which it's carved. Similarly, Dimash's voice sounds like it's produced in cooperation with his whole body. When Dimash sings with a kobyz, he's even more interior than usual (I feel he's naturally a very internal singer). I like how you described it: "Come to me, I want to tell you a story". This is another magical song by composer Renat Gaissin, composer of "Omir Oter". I wish we would hear more collaborations between Dimash and Renat, especially featuring the kobyz...a whole album would be heavenly.

Lovely reaction William. I'm always leery about fan cam footage, but that one was good (usually bad sound quality and too much shakiness). If you haven't checked out the MV of this song, Dimash directed it. It definitely seems you understand Dimash better than most reactors. And I'm also sure you are going to get dozens of people telling you, the Kobyz has 2 strings.

From experience, sometimes it's very difficult to record a good video. People stand in your way, he moves a lot, etc. I am grateful to everyone who gives it a try and shares the result with others. Nobody is forced to watch if they don't want to, but for people for whom every performance of Dimash is important, such fancams are a treasure. Even if official recordings exist, in some cases fancams are better because they focus more on him or some aspects thast the official recordings skip entirely or show from different angles.

William, let me recommend "Qaragym Ai" to You. Two years ago, at a TV concert in honor of the 60th anniversary of Kazakhconcert, Dimash sang a song in memory of the composer, People's Artist of Kazakhstan Kenes Duisekeyev, who died during the pandemic. He was a great friend and mentor of Dimash in the master's degree program of the Kazakh National University of Arts. This performance of Dimash touches everyone to tears. The performance sounds so that you feel the pain of loss, the sincerity and love of Dimash for the teacher. The performance is such that you forget to breathe, beautiful, although very sad. ua-cam.com/video/HilvUOOPRvE/v-deo.html
Dimash's songs or ballads, especially in his native Kazakh, are always touching and very lyrical. One of the fans' favorite songs is "Give me Love", ("Маххабат бер Маган", subtitles) performed by him at the singer's first solo concert in Kazakhstan (Bastau - 2017) after returning from a competition in China. ua-cam.com/video/aBhecY7BMAA/v-deo.html.

I recommend the same but I prefer the Qaragym Ai performance of his Digital Show because it's more intimate: just him and the piano, without any audience. As William mentioned Schubert, it's probably the closest we get to the genre of a "Klavierlied".

Thank you! I loved your reaction & analysis. You described Dimash beautifully. Yes, he is real as an artist and a person. I agree, that his feelings are purest and strongest when it comes to his own heritage. Dimash's Kazakh songs are particularly emotional and favorites of many Dears, including mine. For me, 'Qairan Elim' together with 'Daididau' and 'Samaltau' are in a class of their own. All of these have a powerful, meaningful backstory in terms of Kazakh history, but also in a broader, universal sense.
'Qairan Elim' was born out of compassion for the Kazakh people who were suffering greatly during the pandemic, as they had suffered many times throughout their history (due to numerous wars, political persecutions, great famine). All this can be heard in Dimash's singing. Compassion, love, total devotion... There is something sacred about this song. I can't listen to this without tears, ever. How well kobyz suits Dimash's voice! A magical, shamanic instrument; together they create an almost hypnotic effect.
This Prague version is quite special. Dimash modulates the tune a lot, really masterfully. Good thing we have fan videos that captured this precious performance! Indeed, there is nothing shocking about the vocals in this song - no particularly high notes, no vocal acrobatics. Yet this has a profound effect. Full of totally genuine feeling. As you aptly said - his soul laid bare.

Hi William, so lovely to hear your thoughts on this particular video. I love it so much, that I downloaded it to my own playlist. Since I discovered Dimash, I've been reading up on Kazakhstan history, that's full of hardship. One thing I can not forget, between 1949-1989 the USSR government chose a north-eastern town (Semipalatinsk)of Kazakhstan for atomic bomb test site. The hundreds of nuclear tests had adverse consequences on the nation's environment and population. While I'm watching him singing this song, I can't help but think of all the pain his people suffered through those ages. It helps me to understand the lyrics of this song more. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺

Suzanna, I will check out the reference in your comment. It's awful when huge countries use smaller neighbouring ones for their own gain, often suppressing the people and forcing them to renounce their cultural and spiritual beliefs. There's no question that it happened in this part of the world and still happens in countries around China.

I often wonder why he is taking the in-ears out. You can be sure it’s because he needs to hear himself more clearly. If you are engaging your voice in a classical technique, having your ears blocked feels uncomfortable. Sometimes Dimash just removes one.
