Ahh... I think Mifune's greatest role is the old man in "I Live In Fear" but what do I know... IMHO

I initially saw this highly esteemed actor in spielberg's first comedy and flop 1941 as JIN captain. then years later i found more about him through his great work in the kurasawa masterpieces.i have three of his films, two are his absolute best: rashomon and seven samurai.

Hi Joseph, I bought a box set of Kurosawa's best samurai films on blu-ray a few years ago. Seven Samurai is my favorite from that set. I confess though I prefer the western remake - The Magnificent Seven. I'm a big western fan and I like all the actors in John Sturges film, plus I grew up with that film. Horst Buchholz played the Mifune part.

+Top 10 Good morning!,really?.i finally saw his work in november of 2002 on TCM. the other kurosawa film i have of hus but nowhere the masterpieces of the other two is stray dog(1949). which many police detectives films frequently copied that story from this film noir.

The only Kurosawa films I've seen are the top 6 on this video. I've also seen Zatoichi meets Yojimbo. I probably first saw Toshiro Mifune in the movie Grand Prix on TV back in the 70s, not knowing who he was at the time.

I have so far only seen 3 of Mifune's movies. None of them are The Seven Samurai or Roshomon. I do have the number 1 film recorded and waiting for me. TCM does air his films from time to time. The three films I have seen are Hell in the Pacific, Midway, and 1941. Wonderful posters and stills especially Samurai Assassin, The Seven Samurai, and the final still with the birds.

Thanks Flora, appreciate the comment. I'm glad you liked the pictures. I had a feeling your tally wasn't going to be huge on this one. I've seen 13 and that includes 6 American movies so there are many Japanese films I haven't seen either. I've seen the top 6, all directed by the master, Akira Kurosawa.

Look out for more, he is a wonderful artist the kind that takes our breath away. Hell in the Pacific is a good film the others I have nto seen. But go and get signed up if you can to Criterion films online they have some of his best work with Kurosawa.

Granted the Kurosawa/Mifune combo deserves a list of its own.
Until then 2 recommendations: The Bad Sleep Well,
    and I Live in Fear.
    Spoiler:
For at least half of 2nd movie your brain will NOT recognize Mifune,

I'm only really familiar with a handful of Kurosawa / Mifune samurai epics, so I was basically editing this video like a blind swordsman. I just had to make sure his best known work was near the top. ;)

@@Top10Charts3978 My point is, there's more to them both, the "Sword and Wooden Sandal". The 2 I mentioned, are good examples.

Hmmm...a legend....just not here in the States. Seen #28...1941....a bloated mess. #22 Midway....saw in theaters. #19 Grand Prix...go three Oscar nominations #14 Drunken Angel....one of his first classics #8 High and Low....good thriller #6 Sanjuro....seen it....barely remember it. #5 The Hidden Fortress....classic #3 Yojimbo..Kurosawa at his best. #1 7 Samurai...easily my favorite Mifune movie. So that is 9 seen...not too bad. Voted up and shared.

Merry Xmas Bruce! 9 seen is pretty good. I managed 13 and that includes 6 non-Japanese movies. So you're not watching 1941 this Christmas? ;) Thanks for the comment and share.

Well, he is a legend but then again not everyone can knwo all the great ones..sometimes these ones come later in life, I was pretty old by the time I discovered him. Undoubtedly, this list is a subjective list with which I disagree but I understand ti represents the person's opinion who made it. So, it is okay. As for me, I am trying my best to find his films to see but very few are available sadly. Plus, there were films that were nto good, I saw one last night it was simply stupid. It was not his fault, he was an actor he did hsi job and he did his part well, btu that alone could not save that pathetically inaccurate and silly film. So, we should not judge him as an artist by the faults of bad ditrectors and scritp writers who delivered botched up jobs. He was an artost and as such one of the greatest of all time and that is a fact. Legend or not it is beside the point. Being well known enough or not takes away his talent and achievements' worth, nothing takes away from the artistry with which he served the films and made them special. He was a special person and a great artist, no, he was not just a brilliant actor, he was more, and if you seek out those films that were worthy of his talent you will see that yourself. I hope. Go back to the 16 Kurosawa films to start with and then look out for Hell in the Pacific and Red Sun up till now they were the only ones where I felt justice was done to his abilities. The other directors do not seem to know how to direct him.

Does anyone remember him in A movie with A character called one man army?

  • @42kellys
    @42kellys 4 роки тому +2

I absolutely disagree with the list but never mind it is always very personal as to what we feel is the best some of my favourites are missing like the Scandal, and other are either too high or too low on the list but it is okay, list of favourites or best of lists are always very very subjective.

@@Top10Charts3978 Red Beard, Drunken Angel, Rashomon, Seven samurai, Scandal, Quiet Duel, Musashi l-lll, Red Sun, Hell in the Pacific, in no certain order, because I am still debating in my mind over which one I love better I love them so much and I find it ever so difficult to rank them. I suppose Read Beard is truly number 1 with me I love it so much that the first film that came to my mind when you asked me my fav.5 was that film. Mind you, I am unable to get my hands on his films I find it difficult to watch them so I have not seen most of them. It is therefore a truly limited list, from those I could actually watch.

I didn't get a youtube notification for your reply. Seems they only pop up for new comments not replies. You've seen a lot more of his Japanese films than I have. I have a set of the samurai films on blu-ray. Thanks for posting!

@@Top10Charts3978 Well, Criterion made a wonderful effort to restore these old classics, so perhaps you can have a look. You can buy them in some countries. In some other countries there is this online Criterion film club you can register to; unfortunately in my country it does not exist. Or perhaps you can download some of them I did find 2 of these on UA-cam and the rest I downloaded. Scandal and Quiet Duel, two masterpieces of characters with a noble heart are available on UA-cam. You should watch them they have heart which cannot be said of many films they make today.

I’d say Sanjuro is better than yojimbo. Yojimbo has a silly kind of humor that affects whole characters. Sanjuro I remember as more serious.
Cool list of movies. Seen many, but wanna see more of them.
Also made a quiz about the release order of Mifunes movies! Give it a try if you want!
